Based on projections for other universities of SFA's size and scope the expectation is that enrollment might be off substantially this fall. It would not shock me to see enrollment drop down to 9,000 - 10,000. I don't think this will be permanent.

Hopefully not permanent but still devastating.

This has real potential for growth.

This is a good one.

Agreed. It's a field with huge potential.

The word going around is that SFA plans on having 4,000 students on campus August 1. If that is supposed to be representative of the fall class or just a soft late summer opening, I'm not sure.
BigJack85

I've heard similar numbers but was also unclear. My guess is that it's a combo summer/fall number that builds to a second "fall" session in late September/early October. My guess is that enrollment ends up closer to 10,000. Maybe 11,000. Hopefully fall of 2021 gets closer to 13,000.

Interesting numbers, pre Covid.

What the heck is happening in our school of education?
BigJack85
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes. The graduate school of education accounted for a significant majority of the enrollment decline. If the college of education had stayed the same we would have grown by 200 or more students.
TallTexan

What's causing that?

Fewer teachers seeking advanced degrees to move up to be a principal? It's really dropped off in the last year.

Probably more choices. Definitely more on line alternatives so they can keep working, etc. 5 years ago, the program was still only hybrid. Compare that with others (Lamar) that offer 100% online

Good point.

Came upon an old article from 2007 about renaming the student center after Patillo, & it mentioned that the regents approved tearing down Hall 10, Mays, North, & South hall to make room for new dorms.

And said the regents approved it. Any idea what happened to that?

If anyone's interested. Seems like they need help.

Recently on one of my family quarantine walks, I actually walked through Mays and South. (Doors were just open) They need to be gone. They're so old and rough. Probably just a change in priorities. I bet it's still in the plans.

Doesn't sound like a PT job to me...but does sound very SFA....how can we accomplish this job with minimum amount of work and salary? Ahhh. Yes! Part time will do it!

Not a good take, SFA.

I understand budget cuts 100%. But we just had to give up 300 wins. Let's make an actual FT position for this!

Other athletic departments have cut sports. Other athletic departments have reduced salaries, and/or cut jobs. McNeese has their basketball coach acting as AD. I laud the fact that ours has worked a seriously reduced budget to add even a PT job.

I think it's the irony that the largest sports sanctions ever for SFA just happened, and then we add the part time job for a compliance specialist. To know what a revenue generator sports can be across the board, this posting as an independent reference seems like small protection. However, I'm sure there's a senior academic compliance officer already on staff, and this is just to strengthen them.
BigJack85
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ya. I think that is the important part. There is a full-time academic officer on staff. One that is largely dedicated to compliance??? I think.

We hope. And yes, the irony of it all. But this is SOOO SFA. I've sat on a search committee for a dean and also helped process apps for the Graduate dean...people would say no because we pay pennies. We go after the cheapest people we can get.

The feedback I received from applicants was...that's the salary? **hangs up phone**

Read over the job duties again. That's not a PT job. I would not take it for pt...other universities have that position opened and they are FT. This person will be doing a FT job on a PT pay scale.

Kara Carpenter - Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. Her name was mentioned often since she led the efforts to discover and correct the issues. Her work was lauded by the NCAA. Also, there is a relatively new Compliance Coordinator reporting to Kara by the name of Matthew Gillette

They need some part time assistance to complete tasks they don't have time to do, but are important to assuring we fulfill our obligations to our student-athletes. I don't see how this can be seen as a negative.

"with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment". Only a few years too late for that little gem to be included in such a critical job description.

BTW, is Public Enemy #1 still employed in the Sports Management Department?

We'll what made me curious was that the vote was whether to tear them down immediately that summer.

So it seems like it was a plan that had been rolling pretty well.

Mays is old but those rooms on the 4th floor are nice & spacious.

I definitely wish we could increase salaries. We don't need massive ones to be competitive with a low cost of living, but still need to atleast be in the ballpark.

I just got confirmation that this job is a FT job and whomever posted on indeed messed up.. The schools job search board or whatever it is called has it as a full time position and full time pay...

The defense rests, your honor. Lol Y'all, I could tell from that job description that it would be more than pt. Thanks for clarifying, Jacks.

Looks like between $32-50K with probably 36-38 a realistic starting salary for someone with a little experience.

Well, the Forums section is being handled pretty well by a couple of guys, but the rest of the site could use someone to eliminate the mounds of dust and spider webs. Are any Sawmill scholarships available?

In relation to the enrollment numbers this fall, while driving to Gulf Shores, AL this week I passed a couple of McNeese billboards on I-10. McNeese is offering 'In State' tuition to all Texas residents. Does SFA offer this to any bordering States? Is this an option that would help SFA in enrollment, and possibly athletics??

I"m curious how that would work. Would be just eat the cost of the state contribution on out of state students?

I know a lot of our neighboring states offer it. Even OU does.

It would almost certainly help I'd think.

Open SFA website now live. It's a pretty impressive overhaul for the campus life.

OPEN SFA Fall 2020

Highlights:
8 week half-semester classes available (a full semester crammed into 8 weeks)

Flexible for any student to take as many classes in-person or online including totally offsite.

All classes go virtual after Thanksgiving but campus remains open for students to stay.

Masks everywhere for everyone - only true medical exceptions - even for visitors (assuming this means sporting events).
