Is anyone knowledgeable of any tailgating or fan get together for the SFA @ McNeese game. I'm probably going to go. Bring my tent etc.

SFA opponent ACU is in OT 45-45 in Lubbock against Texas Tech in their opening game.

Edit: they lost after scoring stage touchdown but didn't get the 2 point conversion. They didn't have to go for it, but on the road tried to end it. 52-51 TTU.

Game gave me the exact same vibes when we played them in 2021. Texas Tech lately has really been overlooking their FCS foes it feels like. No doubt their coach is on the hot seat after a disappointing last season(blowout loss to Texas) and nearly dropping one to ACU.

I remember after we nearly beat them there were rumors on x(twitter) that Carthel was being looked at as a possible candidate there. That was of course after the really competitive 2020 basically FBS schedule and really solid 2021 season. We have to hope if we have a breakout year this season Tech doesn't take notice. I don't think Carthel would want to leave SFA, but going back to West Texas where he has all his ties would be hard to resist.

This could indeed be a more interesting season then last year in the WAC.... Lamar has apparently improved and almost knocked off Texas State last.night.

Watched some of that game. Lamar's LB's and DB's are for real.

Guys, this is coming from an old Lumberjack who hopes he's dead wrong, but I cannot see our team doing better than 7-5 this year, heaven forbid 6-6. I just lack confidence in coaching staff, plus question mark at QB and totally retooled offensive line. That said, SFA could also go 9-2 with some breaks.

Please someone tell me how stupid I am...just don't insult my wife and kids...or my dogs.

I'm not going to tell you that you're stupid, but I don't think anyone really knows what this team is or isn't. First game is what it is. I like that they played an extremely clean game, but I didn't learn a thing.

Honestly, I kinda like being in the dark about this team. The past two years got a little over-hyped, so maybe in the dark will be great!
Ljacks&Longnecks
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No way to say yet 65. There has been no overhype as Buckets mentioned. Last years 3-8 failure really shutdown interest on this board and in the general SFA population. I'm sure there are a few on here and around Nac waiting to start in on Carthel if/when the losses start coming.

I think we have a really good corps of running backs. Picked up several D1 transfers--doesn't mean instant success but some of them will do a great job. Wide receivers somewhat a question mark but I imagine 2 or 3 will become go to guys.

Biggest question will be the O Line, Lack of experience for many, and to be successful, they need to gel quickly.
If the O line suffers a lot of injuries or fails in other ways then there will be no path to success.
Then the overall ability of our Defense. Must cut down the run of big plays that hurt us last year. Must have some stamina for the whole 60 minutes if our offense is going to be playing fast all game long.

We didn't learn anything about the team yet. UNT will be the real beginning of discovery.
If you expect to go to Denton and get a win--you will likely be disappointed.
If you expect the scoring explosion we saw last week every game--you will be disappointed.
UIW, Lamar and Nicholls will be very tough in the SLC. If anyone expects to win every game because we dropped from WAC back to SLC--then they are very unrealistic in their expectations.

I called 8-4 a month or two ago and I'll stand by it. We shall see.

I may have predicted we'd win every game handily. 17-0 I think I said.

So far so good.

You hit the nail on the head. O-line is the biggest question mark. They looked good against an inferior opponent but how will they look against UNT's big boys. Going against Bobino in practice helps. He reminds me of #10 for them. Gonna be a test for the C & G's to get him moving the other direction. I thought the two transfer G's looked good in pass pro and when pulling on the counters. Feet looked pretty good. Didn't see any oversets or either getting out over their toes. Technique was solid across the entire OL. Now how does that look against an FBS front we shall see. I'm optimistic though. If we can stay disciplined up front and get on the block from the snap, that's half the battle. Our skill is good enough to make plays if we don't miss assignments.

If our top level players and coaches are all still here...

Call me crazy, but I think the University of Houston is going to really regret that they scheduled SFA for 2025. I've already circled it on my calendar. August 30, 2025.

I'm probably gonna eat my words but I agree. As far as winnable FBS games go, this is it. UH was not good this year. They showed flashes of being good and definitely have talent, but they were just not a good or consistent team.

Unless they rebuild heavily in the portal they will not be able to slow down our offense, and if our defense continues to grow and get better, they may not be able to move the ball on us.

I'm okay with our first FBS win in 23 years being against a watered down big 12 opponent.
SFAXE93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I wouldn't count on it, because that is a Willie Fritz coached team and that guy knows how to coach and administrate his staff.

He has has already started for 2025 with the firing of his OC Kevin Barbay.

at Blinn his first year 6-3-1, second year 9-2-0 and then back to back 12-0-0 and Championships.
at Central Michigan fist year 5-6-0, second year 8-3-0, couple of seasons later back to back 10-2-0 seasons #8 ranking in 2002.
at Sam Houston State 6-5-0 in his first season, second year 14-1-0 and #2 ranking.
at Georgia Southern 9-3-0 in his first season, 8-4-0 his second (only 2 seasons there)
at Tulane 4-8; 5-7; 7-6 a few seasons later 12-2-0 #9 ranking

You're putting too much emphasis on one coach's history. The deciding factor will be how many players he can steal from other schools via the !@#*%# transfer portal.

I will ABSOLUTELY be there. Got my Master's degree from UH, but I have zero loyalty to them. I have a son who graduated from UH. He's a huge Cougar fan, so I'm sure he'll fly down from Northern Virginia for that one.

Let's get a Sawmill tailgating party set up. Everyone on the board is welcome. Hell I'll even smoke a brisket and some ribs the night before for the occasion.

Only stipulation is that we be the most obnoxious and loud visitors UH gets regardless of the outcome. Make Cougar fans regret sitting next to our small section. As God intended.

I'm excited for football season again. Why must I continue to hurt myself like this.

ACU just won a playoff game with a backup QB.

We saw how our season crumbled when we lost our stud QB.

Recruiting isn't just about the starters, but those immediate backups that may be pressed to play on super short notice.

Shoutout to ACU for figuring it out.

"our season crumbled when we lost our stud QB."

19-14 loss to a bad ETAM team. A bogus penalty call, that was so bad it got the ref suspended for the last two games of the season, negated a touchdown that would have put us up 21-3. The "we're sorry" letter from the conference didn't help the scoreboard. Still should beat them, but I don't know how that's on a QB that went 26-41 with no INT's in his first college start. Yes, the playbook was probably simplified for his first start, just as it was when ACU's QB1 got hurt.

27-20 loss to the #6 seed in the FCS playoffs. A game that SFA was in until the final whistle, with a back up quarterback.

A dominating 32-19 win over the #15 seed in the FCS playoffs, that was 11 or 12 before we beat them. With a back up quarterback.

ACU 24
NAU 0

NAU with 194 yards of total offense. ACU QB threw two TD's along with three INT's. Hicks ran for 174 yards on 22 carries.

Nice post 76, I agree with your viewpoints. Then you go look at NAU's schedule & it makes you question things even more. I guess they got the spot because of the conference they play in.

Losing 2/3 to end the year…including a borderline "worst loss in SFA history" constitutes crumbling, to me.

It appears ACU picked up the slack for a backup QB, played the game in a manner designed for them to win.

That's good coaching.

ACU asked the back up to throw it considerably less than we asked Gavin. Why? Oh…cause they found other ways to win. What a concept.

I was told on this board that "no one can recover from losing a star QB" (in fact, I do believe that's the exact quote)…well, it appears that at least one team could.

I'm really happy we stepped up and beat ACu when we had nothing to play for.

Of course, doing that at any point earlier against McN, SelA, ETAMU, would have been nice.

Still bitter about us wasting another season.
SFASawmillGuy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Abilene Christian's offense was awful against NAU. They played their best defensive game of the year, which saved them.

Also helps that we played maybe 6 teams that were better than NAU this year, and beat most of them.

It sucks anyway you look at it, because yeah if we didn't lose to ETAMU we likely take ACU's spot and get an easy first round playoff game. But seeing how their backup played against NAU(3 interceptions), I wouldn't say they were better prepared at the backup QB position than us. Just got a really lucky first round draw.

North Dakota State is going to make them wish for a mercy rule if their starter isn't back.
