Right, not talking about the coach there, but recruiting players from there
Yep definitely need to get all the talent we can.

BigJack85, I like your thinking! Colby Carthel is very attainable and an excellent choice! Todd Whitten is also a good choice. In addition, I know many do not want a lateral SLC move, but K C Keeler MAY be available! I think Ivey already has a new coach and is just waiting for the season to end to announce. (And I am willing to bet it is Carthel!!!)

Kerwin Bell's Valdosta State team just finished the regular season 10 and 0 winning the conference championship in his 3rd year! Beat a #3 West Georgia team 47to31 and had almost 600 yards of offense! Ran for 395 on the ground! The man can coach!

I think someone like Jeff Traylor would be willing to take a pay cut to be the head coach for his alma mater. So money isn't really a massive issue here.

Carthel is a good choice, and possibly will be the guy if Will Healy isn't willing to leave Austin Peay. The jump from D2 to D1 will be different for Carthel though. However he is good at bringing in transfers, so maybe he would be a good fit at SFA.

My only concern about Will Healy is his lack Texas HS football experience. Unless your one of the biggest programs you really have to be able to mine the talent in Texas and NW Louisiana. That's hard coming in outside of Texas. It's like a fraternity.

Ya Texas HS coaches have a tendency to be a pain in the butt to outsiders. Ask Charlie Strong.

But if you find the "next Will Healy" from Texas or the Ark La Tex region? Sure, hire that guy, he's going places.

Yes, Coach Traylor would have the advantage in the recruiting our backyard given his success at Gilmer, being from East Texas and with his vast connections and network of coaches.

Pay attention to this game. If Carthel is the guy, nothing is public until after their season is finished.

Yes you are so right SFAJack76 if it is going to be him we will know very soon after the game only if they lose...He can then get a jump on recruiting...It will be interesting indeed..

It's time.

Big shout out to Coach Byrd and the seniors though for trying to make the best of a bad situation.

They want to have a finalist by Dec 1. That tells me they already have a candidate in mind...

Ya I'd think so. That's 15 days to talk to coaches, vet references, etc and 2 of those days are family time basically.

Conque leaving screwed this season but it also gave Ivey 12 weeks to be in de facto coach search mode.

We need to assign someone to flight tracker watch so we can feel like this is a Power 5 coaching search.

Reckless Speculation (What he excel at) here are some random names I'd be ok with.

Jeff Traylor
Colby Carthell
John King/Scott Surratt combo LOL
Nick Saban
Todd Dodge
Curtis Luper
Todd Whitten
Anyone who runs a triple option
Someone with Texas ties
Not Jeff Byrd
Someone from UNT staff, I love what they have done there

The early December time frame eliminates HS coaches, or at least the good ones...

Going to be a college coach. One who's season is done in the very near future or will be preparing for a meaningless bowl game...

Lol, I've heard from everyone I've met in town that you've got to pick a side, either Little Mexico or El Torro.

Personally, I'm more of a Taqueria San Luis man, but if I had to pick between Little Mexico & El Torro, I'd go El Torro. Word around town is that even the Little Mexico manager eats at El Torro.

Always have been and always will be an El Toro guy when picking between those two. I'll take Las Rosa's in Grapeland over both of them...

Lol, I'm ok with everyone on that list save Todd Dodge. I don't want to run the Sam Ehlinger hope & a prayer offense, which is all I ever saw him run once he took over at Westlake. If I was going to hire an Austin HS coach, I'd go with the Lake Travis guy.

But if you're going HS, I think Scott Surratt might be the guy, but they seem about as likely as Nicholas Saban coming to Nac.

I'll have to check out Las Rosa's sometime soon. I think I have an El Toro initation in the next couple of week, gotta get that El Toro face tat lol. Can be no middle ground in the Palestine Tex Mex wars lol.

No, 93! Someone who runs an air raid offense. Even while the guys are learning to run it, it'll be fun to watch! I'm old enough to have watched the Houston Gamblers (with Jim Kelly in the saddle). Now, THAT was fun to watch!

Dodge failed at UNT. Whitten failed at Sam. Perhaps the next step up was too big for each of them. Perhaps they are not right for down programs. There is some level of risk with any hire, but I don't want us to be giving second chances at this stage of our football life.

We need someone that has built, or been a part of building, a winner at every stop. Turnaround managers are different than sustaining/improving managers. We need a turnaround guy that is high energy, visionary, great communicator, inspires others to greatness, and has a great connection with Ivey. With a great connection to Ivey, he would share the best mid major program in the country vision, and really, really care about the student-athletes.

I think a coach who brings in a spread or air raid would be great for us. I know I've said it multiple times but Graham Harrell, while not super experienced, has done a lot with a little at UNT. Certainly we'd need to find a defensive guy to go with him but I think someone who knows how to put up big numbers with as little talent as possible(the bread and butter do the air raid) would be great.

Jeff Traylor would be great I think, it'll depend if he's willing to take the pay cut. There's also a very good possibility of him being an FBS head coach in the next 5 years so maybe SFA wouldn't be the most ideal stop.

I'd still like to see a NDSU or JMU assistant. Those dudes know how to recruit FCS players, not just rely on transfers.

And Nick Saban is the devil so we'll leave him out.

Todd Dodge is a definite no go. He was one of the best coaches in high school football history until he went to UNT and laid an egg. Now I'd call him a second rate coach who should probably retire soon.

Edstile, I have to go with SFAXE93 on this one, but more from the standpoint of a spectator. What was once exciting and dramatic has now become dull and interminably long. The average length of a college football game is 3 hrs. 30 min. College football TV ratings are down. The spread offense, air-raid, whatever you want to call it -- despite it implementing no-huddle, up-tempo tactics -- turns the game (from my viewpoint) into a two-hand touch, 7-on-7 game. I'm from an older generation ('87 grad) so maybe it's a matter of taste. 80 offensive plays in a game, endless clock stoppages due to incomplete passes...it is just too long a game.

I would worry more about wins and losses rather than length of the game....
TallTexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The spread does lengthen the game, but it's sure exciting to watch.

The challenge is that college football needs to adjust the rules.

Change the clock stopping after first downs to a rule where it only happens with 2 minutes left in the half.

And maybe add a challenge rule instead of stopping it for everything the refs feel like getting a second look at.

Those two changes alone would probably be a 30 minute swing on length of games.
