In with Nacluth on Carthel.

We were terrible. Not much talent on the OLine. Very few bodies even.

Our fourth straight season over .500 is within reach. The talent is consistently better.

Now is the time to start adjusting to make the jump from "built a foundation to built a fortress on that foundation.

I wish we had a bye sooner than Oct 28th, but you gotta play the hand that's dealt to make inseason adjustments.

Our biggest changes will come in the off-season. But I hope we can give the bears a run for their money next week.

Will our biggest changes will occur in the off season?? I have been waiting 25 years to see the 'changes in the off season!' that take us to a championship game. The only difference in this coming off season versus the 20 before Carthel is that McCarty and Hill no longer control the head coach ejection seat that occurred every 4 or 5 years in the past.

Ivey will settle for mediocre results before he fires his close friend, Carthel. I think the same goes for Carthel and Storm.... No changes coming at OC unless Storm leaves on his own.

Settle in, unfortunately we will be on this same ride for years to come!

100% disagree. Total misinterpretation of the situation.

Can always count on 99 to chime in with the same broken record...McCarty and Hill, McCarty and Hill.
But now he can't complain about Sam beating us every year, so he needs a new routine. I still think he is a reincarnation of Gazette from earlier times on this board. There is no magic hire out there. If we fired Carthel tomorrow and hired someone new, 4 years ( or less) from now he would be dissatisfied and complaining about that one.

It's true McCarty and Hill left much to be desired in football hires. It's also true that you can't change coaches every 4 years and expect good results due to changing game plans and schemes and personnel.

Yes you can count on me!! Thank you for acknowledging my comments!! it really is interesting how we have been facing the same issues in our football program for over 25 years and we say the same things year after year and nothing ever changes!! It is also really funny how some people on this forum can have a voice and say similar things, yet others are chastised and called out....

Carthel does own the system as it stands now. Coaches and players all under his realm at the helm. So he gets all the praise or criticism that comes with being HC.

We had nothing when he got here. He worked with very little the first couple of years. Little by little we have seen bits and pieces of improvement. He has had a number of coaches poached from here but that is part of the territory.

We have 2 excellent running backs, an offensive line that should be our tower of strength this year. We have had very few quarterback sacks allowed by O Line. Maurer is a competitive firebrand. His will to give 110% is without question. Still a work in progress but capable of doing the job. I believe Weeks could also carry the load at starter.

One thing I have seen with this offense is that we have too many running plays that go for a loss or no gain. Not sure if it the blocking schemes that we use or the running lanes. Seems like our RBs are always running right at groups of 3 or 4 players. This would have to be at least in part on the OC.

Some play calling yesterday was abysmal. 1950s run straight into the line football. Are we telegraphing our plays to the defense...or are they picking up our trends on film? How many times did we fail to pick up 1 or 2 yards yesterday on 3rd and 4th downs. Play calling all on OC.

Slant passes to Rikel were extremely effective vs Commerce. Yesterday he had one early for 20 yards then I only remember him being targeted a couple more times all game. Harris is becoming a breakout guy but we don't need to overdo it with him like we did Gipson. We have 4 or 5 guys on this receiving corps that need to all be in the mix.
I don't believe we are using all of our offensive weapons nearly as effectively as we need to be. With these RBs, WRs and QBs the offense should be even stronger than the results we have been getting.

Defense has been pretty effective minus the 3 or 4 big plays we give up each game although yesterday I feel the defense was below par.

It is time for Carthel to start producing more W's. I loved the way he handled Maurer yesterday after the unsportsman like call. He chewed his rear while the refs marked it off and took him out for a play to ride him and get his head back on straight. Now I would like for him to show that same determination to digging in on why we can't reach that next step. Team discipline seems to be much improved over past teams....until yesterday. I expect that to be dealt with.

Don't believe Ivey will give Carthel forever but pressure will start to mount for better results and rightly so. Or Ivey will move on and the new man will want his own guy.
My personal choice would be to look at new OC as a starting point to leveling up.

Exactly! I have called it many times from the stands. It usually gets three yards by the time the coaches translate it. Guess I need new hand signals.

When Carthel was hired everyone was talking about how he was going to lead us to the playoffs and competing for championships. I bought into it. I thought he was the answer.

However, Year 5 and we will have one playoff appearance and zero playoff wins. The goal posts keep on moving. Needs better facilities to get better recruits (correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we have a top 5 and top 10 recruiting class), coaches are getting poached and it takes time to get the new system in, 6-5 is a good season, blah blah blah.

I'm tired of the excuses. We've had one playoff win in the last 28 years. We couldn't even compete in the southland and you can't tell me Sam has better resources or UIW.

If our football team isn't going to produce then put the money into track, volleyball, the cheer/dance teams, etc.

Out of 100 FCS teams, our total offense is 24th, and scoring offense is 13th.

Mauer is tied for 14th for points responsible per game.

I get it. Just making the point that, Carthel has just started to build. If we go 5-6 and 6-5 the next couple of years we need to talk. Until then I think Carthel is making progress despite the head scratchers.

Coaches getting poached is put forward as a fact not excuse, hence the phrase that comes with the territory.

I too, believe that it's time for the Carthel era to produce results. Football is not going away unless the athletics budget gets crushed for some reason. If it did other sports would be doomed as well.

Certainly understand the frustration. I felt it big time yesterday.

One big question, no one seems to ask.

Who do we hire that can do better than Carthel? My argument is, until we have $500k to spend on a head football coach we are "spitting in the wind" if we think we'll find someone more qualified than Carthel.

Carthel ain't perfect but he's pretty good. The idea of firing him after a stinker is, well, ludicrous. I've been through the coaches since Charlie Simmons The right move is to continue forward with Carthel and let him continue to build.
Ljacks&Longnecks

Okay. So the facts from Saturday are we turned the ball over on downs twice because our OC decided to run a 200 lb back straight into a pile of 16 or more men that weigh between 200-300+ lbs. resulting in no gain and loss of possession. This certainly assisted in us not winning the game.

Having an offense with the data you pointed out, it would seem we had a myriad of other plays that could have served to gain yardage, keep possession of ball and perhaps scored a victory.

I'd agree with this. Carthel is the right dude for the job.

We don't need a rebuild. He's done that.

We just need some tweaks to take us to the next level and a little more luck.
TallTexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
For the record, I don't think you "tweak" things and then end up in the championship game.

You tweak a few things from the base Carthel's rebuilt and get to be a regular 8 win team and playoff appearance.

Then you look at the changes you make from there to start going on runs regularly.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were most of the regular contenders.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were most of the regular contenders.
We've won one playoff game in 28 years (1995 the last time we won more than one playoff game in a year) ...so our building of being a "regular contender" is bordering on I-35 construction time.

Since 1995 we've had a whooping 6 years that we've won at least 8 games.

Three plus decades of relative futilities but we somehow need longer.

The idea that we are some nationally relevant program is a myth.

Now, that said, a realistic goal (one that I need to embrace more) is one of what you said. 8/9 wins a year, and playoff contention.

Unfortunately, unless something massive happens this year, those goals will not me met.

Master, you are such a buzzkill.

So doing some quick research the SFA lifetime football record is 424-537-31 which is a .427 winning %
Going by those numbers I think we can safely say that SFA has never been nationally relevant in football.
Of course that goes back to 1923. I'm not sure if that record even qualifies as mediocrity.

Since moving up to Div 1-AA, now FCS the win % is better but not outstanding.

Sadly, a conference title or playoff game this year is very near death, one more loss seals it.

So while this year has been disappointing and frustrating it kind of fits right in with history.

Personally I would still stick with Carthel for now. Perhaps he was overhyped or perhaps it takes longer than we want to build something from nothing which is what he had when he arrived. He hasn't worked miracles but he hasn't driven this program into the ground as Conque did. He still may pay dividends in a year or so with the slow buildup.

Just remember that if SFA decided to move on, we would get another 3-4 year period of a new coach implementing his new plans before any real success could be expected.

Incarnate word has three playoff appearances, three playoff wins, and three head coaches in the last 6 seasons.

Don't tell me it can't be done. Apparently new head coaches at UIW can win immediately, but at SFA it takes years and years and years.

UIW doesn't have any other programs that perform. They put ALL their resources into football.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but none of our other programs perform.

Certainly not on the men's side.

Except for T&F. Shoutout T&F.

Well you are correct, yes they did do that at UIW. So then we should cut Carthel loose so that we can catch that magic train too? Do you have an insight as to the next miracle worker? I'll gladly back this plan if you can guarantee the success of said next coach.

So when we hire a new guy and his first 2 years go by without positive results, can we guess who one of the first people to call for his head will be?? I think we can.

I get it Master, we are all tired of mediocrity, disappointment and our records following the trail of our lifetime totals. I agree that football is not even close to anything nationally. I would agree that most of us bought into the hype because Carthel won big at D 2. Reality sucks sometimes. But throwing him out and trying someone new doesn't remotely guarantee us anything. It might work, but Carthel might have a great year next year too. And both could fail miserably also. If we were going 2-9, 3-8 every year under Carthel then a reason for dismissal would be obvious. We did technically win the WAC last year, such as it was.

Many years back SFA had a good head coach in John Pearce. We were competitive each season. But the McCarty/ Hill gang dumped him because he didn't win a conference title. He went 46-32-2 with 2 playoff appearances. Seemed well liked but got dumped. I suspect he fell out of favor with the good ole boys.
2 playoffs appearances in 7 years, far better than most here. Then back to the mostly failed coaching carousel.

I don't believe that Carthel should get unlimited time and my faith in him has been shaken a bit this year but I'd give him a bit longer before throwing the dice again. We don't have a great track record in that regard.

We finished 3rd in the commissioners cup 2023, 2nd in 2022. I think that's across the board performance.

That's absolutely correct. And in each of those years, the women's sports held the majority of our commissioner's cup earnings.

Each year at 60%.

Our men's sports, specifically Baseball, Golf, XC and (post-season) MBB have been non-relevant for many years.

I'm simply saying, it can be done. So many people on this board are convinced "He needs more time."

Like, how long? Seriously, how long?

I know he's not going anywhere. He for sure gets next year.

But at some point...consistent results matter.

I'm sure he's a great dude. And I know he had massive success at lower levels, but as one poster said, that does not always translate into continued success.

While you are correct that UIW found success with new coaches, it's important to not look at sudden success as long term success, and look at other factors that go along with sudden success.

Even we had outstanding success a little over a decade ago with a sudden drastic change, not at head coach but in our offense, when we changed to that air raid attack Texas tech ran. But remember it wasn't lasting success. It was 2 seasons that proceeded to start the worst decade of football in school history.

UIW got blessed with back to back record setting QBs, but it's really hard to tell if their success is to last or not. They haven't really been put through the wringer and the Southland this year probably isn't the 2nd best D2 conference.

IF any changes came, I would hope it's with long term success in mind, and not just to get one or two really good years only to fall back into obscurity.

I'm just *****y about our program. Sure, I'd love long term success, but hell, we don't even have short term.

There has to be an answer, somewhere.

That we haven't found consistent success in 3 decades is frustrating as ****.

I'll always root for our teams, but holy hell it's a tough experience.
