Why doesn't the marketing department at SFA take on this "attendance issue" as some sort of project?

Let's get the hospitality department involved with the "game experience" side of things.

It would be beneficial for the students involved- gives them a real world experience.

I'm sure I'm just tossing out ideas that have been discussed before...
They'd have to admit that sports work as marketing for the university first.

Other than that though, it's an excellent idea to get students involved in making the university great. And they can put theory to practice.
Looks like they might have come around. Just saw a flyer the Athletics dept put out with Free Food,Music,Games before the games.. with owning a business in Stephenville for 4 yrs I know the free food thing at the university thing became HUGE!!!! It will draw the kids in thats for sure..

Our record against the historical Virginia Colony is quite impressive over the last 15 years. Just need to get that U of V skin on the wall.

Also, I can't imagine what our notable win record would look like if we could actually get home & homes or even on the schedule of a lot of schools.

I know Wednesday games are somewhat harder to attend for the locals, but was still surprised at the turnout last night.

There's a good conversation on Twitter below with a few students. It's good to see there are more out there acknowledge it's gotten better, but also WANT it to be the best.

To be fair to this list, the 90's higher averages were probably almost all accounted for by the Ladyjacks dominance. Once they took a step back, the 1,000 average is probably inline with the men's pull. Then winning more under Kaspar started the climb.

I think attendance is one of the main things we need to fix for the upcoming basketball season. I really think we need to get the SFA business and marketing departments involved.

There is no other big show in town. There is no reason why we don't average 5k in attendance- specially in Nacogdoches.

The university needs to be all in! Most of us will agree that this would be the easiest way to grow our university.

Why aren't more people (specially students) showing up?

YES YES YES get the SFA business and marketing departments involved. Then maybe the professors will feel more needed and wanted and then they will let the Athletic Fee pass.. This is a great idea and it really wouldnt cost any $$ asking them for their input... Gotta work together..

That one is a real head-scratcher for me. Does the university inform students of games, other than those cute little "Game Today" signs around the campus? I agree that there should be at least 5,000 at EVERY game!

When I was a student i asked several students about the attendance. A large portion told me it was because they didn't care who we played. Others said because they didn't know about the game. Some said it's because no one goes to SFA for sports. And some said it's because "we suck". I remember when we went 17-1 and lost to Corpus the season we played Utah. After that loss attendance suddenly dropped drastically at home.

There's just still a ton of apathy in our student body. The strength of opponents isn't getting better, especially not home games, and I know for a fact that the university promotes itself and the games very well both on social media and around campus. It's just a lot of students not caring enough unless it's Sam Houston or a nationally televised or recognized game.
sfa17
How long do you want to ignore this user?
As a recent Sfa Grad(2017) I think there are several factors effecting student attendance. all the points that SFA_03 states are correct. We have too many student that rather be at Texas A &M then SFA. I think those students are lost causes. But also a lot of the students are also unaware of the games. We have been having this discussion for years and I think there is not a lot we can do to improve the # anymore (sfa athletics marketing department is doing great) It will just take time, continued success and Organic growth. We can't give away cars at every game to get students.

But we cant blame only the students. We need more nac residents. Sfa mbb should be treated like a NBA team. Not just for sfa grad but locals who never attended sfa.

Unless we make it in the Big 12, week in and week out we wouldn't have huge names to draw crowds to home games. Heck, Texas is in the Big 12 & sometimes they can't get more than 3k people there.

SFA17 brings up a good point about SFA being some students second choice and that perhaps might affect their level of apathy towards the University. Maybe if we can work on the academics & prestige(we've got a chicken and egg problem here), we could get 5k fans to every home game.

Overall though, we beat the snot out of the rest of the conference in those metrics, so we're obviously doing something right.

How much do we control our own schedule? Like could we move midweek games to Tuesdays?

I'm not 100% sure what the percentage of Nac residents are who attend church on Wendesdays, but it affects a good number of people who would otherwise show up to support SFA.

Conference games are set by the conference. Our non conference games are set by us and the university we play. problem is that's been detailed multiple times, without a real airport and with how good we've been, teams don't want to travel to Nac. It's not worth it to them to come here and potentially lose.
