I'm torn about the schedule next year. We've got Mississippi St and then an unnamed non-conference opponent. If it's Southern Utah then you count on us starting 0-2 with loads of injuries. That basically guarantees a couple of early conference losses. (We typically start with McNeese and Central Arkansas early. My guess is that we start 1-3. From there it's a total crap shoot. Maybe a miracle happens???? We win 5 of 7 down the stretch and finish 6-5. Not much room for error. When I say 6-5 I'm considering both non-conference games as losses. Blank Big Sky team and Mississippi St. (we have an atrocious record against the Big Sky). So that's two losses off the bat. Conque has never beaten Sammie since he moved to Nacogdoches so that's a loss. McNeese will be tough guaranteed. 4 losses right off the bat and even the most optimistic person knows we aren't going to beat Miss St or Big Sky opponent (it just doesn't happen). Basically we have to sweep UIW, HBU, ACU, Lamar and Nicholls and pick up a win against SELA. I think they are on the upswing.

My blah blah blah rant is over. The best. VERY BEST it looks for us next year is 6-5. And that's with a few things falling are way.

Sometimes a little (or in this case Big) rant goes a long way. I mean another year of basically the same is what's depressing. If I thought there was a wild chance of us getting to 7-4 I might be moderately enthusiastic. That's really hard to imagine given that on paper and statistics (Billy Bean) we already are likely to lose 4 - 5 games. Everything I mean everything has to go are way to get to 7-4. Even then we'll be losing a senior qb next year so 2019 sets up to be a disaster. So what do we Hope and pray that Conque recruits the best junior college transfers ever to come to Nacogdoches and build an actual division 2 o-line (not the naia thing we have) and build forward. Yikes.

If we go 11-0 and then march to a FCS national title then I do hereby solemnly pledge to give my entire life's savings to SFA Athletics, as well as go out and get a full time job flipping burgers at Whataburger and donate all my Whataearnings to SFA Athletics. I'll even throw in my wife in the deal (but not my dog). Heck, I'll even do it if we lose our first playoff game and finish 11-1.

Who else is willing to join me in making this pledge?

Big Jack, SFA did beat Weber State, a Big Sky team, in 2014 - Conque's first year at SFA. Weber also had a new coach that year. Let's see how each team has done with their new coaches.

Weber:
2014 2-10,
2015 6-5,
2016 7-5 with a 1st round playoff loss to Chattanooga,
2017 9-2 will play Western Illinois in the playoffs this Saturday

SFA:
2014 8-5 with a 1st round loss to Northern Iowa.
2015 4-7,
2016 5-6,
2017 4-7

Good to hear no excuses. To be clear I'm not in the camp of 9-2 or bust. I would say 7 is the bare minimum. 8-3 is palatable.

The SLC in 2018 will be pretty wide open and I think completely different than in 2017.

SHSU will have a better defense with all the returning experience despite losing their GOAT PJ Hall, but are losing so much firepower on offense to graduation it will be interesting to see if the Bearkats can strike gold on offense again.

UCA will be replacing some key pieces on offense and will have a complete unknown at QB. Defensively will still be dominant.

Nicholls State will likely be the head of the conference with Fourcade and that phenomenal offensive line returning.

McNeese fans are not confident about their team at all next season with all the pieces they'll be replacing, but McNeese also has the most storied program in the SLC so they'll likely be back just as strong.

SLU is a wild card.

NWST will be completely rebuilding. New coach. New players. New system.

UIW and HBU will still be themselves.

ACU will be much improved. I'm glad we don't have to go to Abilene next season.

And I guess that leaves us. Honestly we're loaded on offense, but have no depth to speak of(see Jake Blumrick's 2017 stats). If we can stay healthy, I think Foster Sawyer and our experienced receivers should be very potent. I think it's a matter of playing to our strength on offense and have a down field passing game. Defensively I love the direction we're going and expect us to improve there. It will be 100% a matter of if we can stay healthy or not. If we can, 8 wins and a playoff berth should absolutely be our goal. Of course Sam Houston is a must win, especially now that they should be rebuilding, and NWST is also a must win. Both are fireable games unless we're something and 0 entering the BOTPW or have the playoffs on lock by NWST.

Absolutely. We haven't had a solid offensive line since the 2014 season. That being said I think the returning experience on the offensive line is definitely a good sign. Hopefully that experience will be on display.

That was a short stay. Was he demoted or released? In his defense, it was hard for him to be successful when most of his best players were nursing injuries.

The Texans were 6-6 (3-3 on the road) ending the season on a 3 game losing streak.

They did take #4 Midwestern State to OT losing 42-45 in Wichita Falls and lost by 12 to National Champion Texas A&M Commerce 21-33.

They return 41 seniors for 2018.
