Also, we going to talk about the two timeouts we burned on defense on Sam's last possession?

Not, cause that would mean us being critical of Carthel.

Can't do that.

I will do it. Poor leadership is why we lost tonight! And just like the last 25 years, its not going to get better until we hire a proven SH or NDSU type coach... Ivey needs to eliminate the hype and decide who we are going to be in Football. Mediocre or great??? I dont hear hype from Keeler, and never heard it from Fritz, but they both got the job done!!

"But it's the same bs every year. Extra conservative, just the same series over and over. Here's what it looks like.

1st and 10 - Rush straight into the line.
2nd and 9 - Rush straight into the line.
3rd and 7 - Either a lateral pass to the sideline/WR screen to hope a DB misses a tackle, OR, a 30 yard bomb."

This right here from Purple Out. After we intercept. A first down or two and it's over, but our offensive call is two dives and 40 yard bomb. That's when I knew it wasn't going to end well. Horrific play calling from the sideline. Also, in another defining series, who throws two WR screens in a row that are covered? Horrible OC plan.

Back to that 3td and 1 right before the half. No guarantee that you will pick it up by running the ball but odds were you would and Sam wouldn't have scored. That's was a huge momentum shift… Guess I'll get off the couch and wipe the Doritos off my shirt.

Nope, you're hired as OC. Plus, Doritos would be a good third down sponsor.

It's probably just meant to be and for the best that SHSU gets to keep that BOTPW trophy for good, their name is all over that damn thing anyway.

You may not be the hero we're looking for, but you may be the hero we need.

Carthel is in his 4th season so criticize away.
But I would start with the utter predictability of our offense play calling. First change I would make.

When does Carthel's contract expire?

I think we're trending that way.

The offense has regressed, badly.

Why we lost today:
1 Red Zone production
2 Red Zone Production
3 Offensive play calling
4 Red Zone Production
5 Special Teams Flubs and mistakes
6 RED ZONE PRODUCTION

Self had good 1st half....was a no show in 2nd half.

Play calling is bad.....7 or 8 wide receivers screens every game. Run Miles Reed straight in to the teeth of the defense. Get inside red zone and go overly conservative when we go for a 4th and 5 from midfield at times.
You forgot coaching.

I think play calling covered some coaching aspects.

Let's not get stupid, Carthel is a phenomenal coach and will help our team. But he does need to get out of his own way and I think coach storm is a good start. Storm promised the most dynamic SFA offense ever. We haven't seen that. We need to get an OC who can make adjustments and be aggressive.
And we need to find a DC who can coach like last year. We need to be aggressive, bring pressure, and make QBs worry. Shoemaker was 100% shaken up by our defense today, and our defense does give me hope for the rest of the year, but we still aren't playing as aggressive as a year ago.

This felt like Crowton's SFA offense today.

The second half did. But the offense all season has not felt as good as last year even. Last year we played to our strengths and used the speed we had to create separation in our passing options. This year we're running almost a high school level passing attack and our offensive line is incapable of run blocking.

Idk how but we have regressed in our offensive game plan while returning so many starters.
AxeEm99

Well if we need to fire Coach Storm, lets do it right now so next year is not another rebuilding year... Carthel can do the play calling himself for the remainder of the season.

I agree with this part of your comments. There were some head-scratching play calls today made by the OC. But I don't put the blame for this loss on Carthel. He didn't get a punt blocked by being too slow to get it off when they were obviously going for the block (and almost get two others blocked for the same reason). He didn't fumble a ball in the 4th quarter when we were in FG range. He didn't jump offsides on 4th down on the three yard line with 35 seconds left.

And BTW, Jerrel Wimbley is our best back, IMO. He needs to get a lot more touches every game.

LOL, I don't think we need to worry about that (2027 I think). He is drawing a lot of interest in bigger gigs and we'll be lucky to keep him past this year. So all of the negative comments about the HC, well you'll probably get your wish. I am sure the bigger schools appreciate the recruiting, the high school relationships, and the resurrection of the SFA shatshow. A few losses and some of us forget what we have. Am I content with the first drive momentum killer that luckily we get 3 pts out of (by switching out to our #3 QB?) NO! Nor am I content with the play calling and a change is necessary or corrections must be made. The DC is coming around and we appear to tackle better, so defensively I am content for the time being. ACU will be no easy task, and beating them twice will be even more difficult. By the way Self was 10/10 to start the game so he's capable of being the guy. Imagine if he never had to pick the snap up off his shoes, how much better rhythm he'd have?

ACU is struggling at Utah Tech, down 6-10 at the half.

Also Brian Maurer's offense should be fun next year. They clearly like his athleticism so I bet we'll see a ton of designed QB runs and options with him. Will really open our offense once he learns it a little more.

Was kickoff coverage and punt coverage as bad as the stats show? Did Sam really average 34.7 yards in kickoff returns and 26 yards on 1 punt return? Those are horrendous numbers.

Also a 51% completion rate is terrible but lucky for us Sam was significantly worse. 3.9 yards per rush is okay. I like to see over 4 yards per rush but Sam only managed 3.6 yards per rush attempt. Just looking at the stats (other than atrocious special teams) you might think SFA won. But they somehow managed to find a way to lose.

It seems clear the coaches don't trust Self. That may explain why they don't open up the offense more. Tra can't do it.

We guys we have enjoyed many of years of this rival. My wife's best friend is a lumberjack and we always sent stuff to each other before the game every year from our universities. Hell I have a sfa axe I use to split firewood with. I touched it up with SH on one side so when friends come by they don't think I lost my mind. LOL!!! What really sucked I couldn't make the game today. I will say tho I cheer for yall now in the WAC. I really thought yalls coach would be a really good one when sfa hired him. It kinda like when Sam hired Tod Whitten. He done wonders at DII but sucks at DI. Best of luck in yalls future and hopefully we can meet again if yall move up.

When Sam returned kickoffs they ran hard and straight ahead and got good yardage. Our guys seemed more tentative on returns and spent time looking for a hole to move to instead of getting the yardage available.
Another minus for special teams today.

Don't blame you Bearkat94. FBS will be a different world and will take you guys a few years to adjust. Be a good test of your fanbase---the real fans vs the ones that only show when winning. No more shots at Nattys either.

Hope SFA never makes that move for football.

Other than Campos' FG's, special teams was a mess yesterday. Roughing the punter, blocked punt, kick coverage, Brown kicking out of bounds (like he did at NRG last year), Quick's punting. Odd since special teams has been a bright spot all season.

Best hope you don't become a Southwest Texas/Texas State, that was a strong lower level program, and is now completely irrelevant at the FBS level.

The outcome was heartbreaking & frustrating, but we were surrounded by friends, which made the loss easier. I, personally, had the most fun I've had at a FB game! Glad Texan was a part of our Lumberjack Reunion! #AxeEm #LumberjackFamily

Woke up pissed off lol. Carthel is a good head coach, he brings in the right talent, he's a people person, and a good leader. But man he needs to let go of Storm. Storms calls are so consistently horrible. 3 & long, it's a screen or wide zone. It's so predictable, and he doesn't seem to be creative in his play design or calls. That's going to be the biggest game of the year, and Storm decided to change nothing. He was a little aggressive in the first half, when second half came he changed the entire pace of the offense. But NOTHING was new or creative. Run a trick play or something. We scored 16 points. You have to do something to get the momentum up. Embarrassing. Frustrating. Hope Carthel gets rid of him soon.

His only creativity was a package with Brian Maurer, that is so predictable. I bet they did a read option or designed qb run 85% of the time he was in at qb.

I've thought long and hard for a positive from the game. Finally remembered one.... NRG had Dollar Hot Dogs.
