The WAC needs to update its branding. I'm wondering if we haven't seen a rebranding, because of the unsettled nature of college athletics right now.

More regional (western) sports writers are talking about the WCC looking at GCU and SU. Possibly CBU if the conference (WCC) expands. If WAC lost SU it would be a net gain. Losing GCU or CBU would be a net loss imho.

We have work to do. McBroom's interview with David Smoake was very informational. He made it clear that facilities and coaching staff improvement was his top priorities. Basketball is already there. Can't wait to hear more.

The writer of the article (Matt Faye of the Beaumont Enterprise) made some good points at the time it was written. And his comment about the WAC's absolutely STUPID playoff points system was right on.

I like the idea of either an alligator gar carving, or a giant foot(Big foot, get it?). Battle for Big Foot would be some pretty good branding IMO.

I would say gotta base it off the Sabine river. I know we got Red River Rivalry but Sabine River Showdown got a good kick to it. Adding a Giant alligator gar would beperfect.

I even know how we'll announce it. We film a "hunting documentary" with Carthel & the NSU coach where they're out in the woods & come across a giant footprint in the mud. He's already got the camo, just add some "found footage" of them discovering it.

Could be highly entertaining and a great way to "restart the rivalry".

Let me preface this with: I know SFA has a lot of our house to get in order before we go expanding sports offerings.

But an earlier discussion of Tuition profitable sports got me to thinking, what if the Southland conference as a whole made offering every tuition profitable sport it's goal.

The main reason I see is that every single Southland school could use extra enrollment, save for maybe RGV. I'll use SFA's numbers below as a rough approximation.

Now obviously that is a rough approximation. For example, it doesn't include the cost of the scholarships, travel or gear. I just guesstimated the coaching salaries at 60k per HC, two assistants at 45k for every sport. Tuition revenue is (roster size-scholarships)*15k.

The scholarships themselves are nearly 1.4 million, but that is money SFA is largely paying to itself. The marginal cost of having an additional student in class is certainly not 15k to SFA. So I feel like there's some room to play with in that number.

Essentially, each school in the Southland could get an additional 270 students at a near breakeven cost.That's a 2% increase in enrollment for SFA, but for a school like Nicholls that is 4% growth. In a bus league with all other costs kept down, it starts to make sense.

The couple gifted $20 million to UTRGV in 2024, after already donating $15 million back in 2016.

Robert C. Vackar is one of the principals at the Bert Ogden Auto Group, a conglomerate of automobile dealerships in the Rio Grande Valley. (The same group that built the 9,000 seat Bert Ogden Arena in 2018 that is the home of the Houston Rockets D-League Team Grande Valley Vipors)

When your university has connections like this, the facilities will come.
