Wayland was on one of the pressers with Vidlak. Seemed like a legit good guy with a true desire to help the team and be good at what he does. Definitely want him to stay here for all 4 years with that attitude.

Hope that LacesOut will chime in about the OLine today. They were not on top of their game and the ESPN+ guys mentioned some OL injuries in practice this week. Injuries and playing out of position in the line makes a difference.

I was expecting a loss, but hey, we played the game closer than I thought. It would have been better if Vidlak had been there. I don't think IWU is as strong as its rank says unless it plays a weak, defense-minded team.

I don't know if I'm full "Anti-Carthel" as much as I am "pro-winning."

The facts don't lie: he has a losing record at SFA.

I am absolutely sure he's a good leader and "allegedly" a good recruiter. But, this is a results-oritented business.

And the results, the facts, place him as a below average head coach.

Are we insane for keeping him? Probably not. Seems like a great ambassador for the school and program. Are we insane to expect anything more than average? The results would indicate that's exactly what we'd get.

We"ll run it back next year and just play to the Lord Up High that Vidlak stays healthy. It's clear we haven't recruited good enough QB's to manage games if Sam is out.

If I was going to make the case for Carthel through next year, it would be on this:

1. Everyone agrees he's a good dude and a good spokesperson for the university. His family is even bought in to Nacogdoches itself, owning a business here.

2. While breaking in a new OC, the offensive stats are much improved over last season. Defensive stats are also greatly improved. Obviously you'd want to see more wins, but Carthel made changes and we're more competitive.

3. You get a lot back next year. Vidlak, two coordinators, another year of recruiting.

4. The buyout could be better used on other imminent needs.

That's a foundation you can build on going into a contract year.

Bc the 2023 season was bad and we knew we needed fixes on offense and defense? One of which included a new coordinator?

I mean you can throw all those out and hope the new person will bring a QB, a good OC and DC and game management, and win right away.

Or, given that we've got a year left on Carthel's contract anyway, the easier thing to address this off-season is the game management aspects and leave those other pieces in place.

The first point is primarily unrelated to winning football games, but there are certainly worse things than losing them.

I never want a Briles, Kelly, Paterno, etc type leading our program bc SFA would never recover from a "win at all costs" type coach if folks got hurt.

Carthel being a good dude isn't a guarantee that would never happen, but I do think it's still a plus in his column.

To add to a lot of the surprisingly good points.

Carthel has improved this team. In 2023 the team was not up to par. The same fight, confidence, and drive wasn't there from what we've seen from prior Carthel teams.

He brought in Chris Ross, who admittedly needed a little time, but ended up making our offense very strong. Brought in Vidlak, who in every way looks like one of, if not potentiality one of the best pure passers SFA has ever had. I loved Moses, but Sam has an a better arm in a less QB friendly offense.

SFA's defense is elite. Not good. Elite. These dudes can play ball and when we run the schemes we ran against UIW and FBS opponents we can compete with anyone, regardless of the talent gap.

In 2023, we had talent, but the drive wasn't there. It resulted in 3 wins. This season, we had at best more than potentially a 11-1 regular season, and a worst a 6-6 year. That's a drastic improvement.

2025 SFA will be a make or break year. It's contract year so it's gonna be playoffs or bust. Everyone knows that. But keeping Carthel means we keep the pieces to make 2025 a very special season. If it's not, yes we move on. But with Carthel at the helm next year, the Jacks will be in everyone's radar.

Expectations will be through the roof if we can hold onto Carthel, Ross, and Mutz. Anything less than playing after thanksgiving will be considered a loss. But if we make a change, more than likely we will be waiting another few years before SFA Football is back to where we want to be.

Hoping beyond hope that other schools don't come picking off our coaches again the way LaTech has in the past. We've got some good ones!

And Carthel needs to hit the portal for another quality QB, because it's glaringly obvious that after Vidlak we've got no one ready to step into the spotlight right now.
