Terrible homecoming crowd. Student section was nearly empty. Very little rain and drizzle. No excuse.

592 yards of offense, yet our OC sucks. Ok …. (Sam, with 85 scholarships, had 371 yards against UT last week.)

Seven defensive starters from last season are gone. Four are playing FBS at a high level. What would this defense be with Fox, Osagiede, Brooks, and Roberts? TK out with injury. Add a starting LB, that was the second leading tackler on the team last season, that decided he was bigger than the team, so had to go after just two games.

Of course Carthel took the blame. That's what good leaders do. There is plenty of blame for this game to go around. Bad loss any way you look at it.

All in, it's been a very disappointing season. The defense is painful to watch, and has been since Montgomery. Offense, led by Self, has been extremely inconsistent. Same for special teams.

Xavier Gipson is a generational player. I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes on Sundays.

Yes 99, for the 100th time you say we need a Fritz or a Keeler...then tell us who these miracle workers are so we can go get them. Oh thats right , you have no idea.

Your jealousy of Sam is so not a pretty sight.

Perhaps you can do some research and find the perfect candidate and get with Ryan Ivey and get it done.

I will just say this... I know the AD at SH personally. I work with his daughter. If he can entice a Fritz or Keeler type coach, SFA can too!!
I am not an AD, and do not work in those circles, but the big reason SH got Fritz and Keeler was because of persistence. Keeler moved all the way from Delaware to coach at SH!! DELAWARE!! Ivey needs to find out who the most successful FCS coaches are and start calling them. Then call again. And again. And again until they say Yes!!! (Sales 101)
Trying to get lucky from D2 to D1 is not the answer. A PROVEN FCS WINNER is the only answer if we REALLY want to go bigtime!

I will take Ryan Ivey over Bobby Williams all day, any day. Name a sport other than football and …. golf, that Williams is having success at. Sam used to be good at baseball. Bowling has been decent, but I'll take our team that has no facilities. What else?

Ivey did do a national search for a football HC. There were others in the mix that we could not afford. The same just happened in T&F. Painful, but current reality. How have you supported SFA athletics? Attended games? Supported through PLF?

Ryan Ivey is one of the most respected young AD's in the country. We are fortunate to have him.

Yes, there has to be a way to get the student body more involved. I managed to sit through the minor misting and did not melt. It has to be dishearten to the players to see such an empty stadium. It is easy enough to see the student section empty, So I walked around the concourse and look back at the grandstand side to see nothing but mostly empty seats. Sidenote concerning the reserve padded seats Ivey has added. They are terrible and very uncomfortable as far as I am concerned. I don't think they are much of a bonus.

Hopefully this will be a real learning loss for the coaches. The team did not give up true, but it took getting our backs against a wall before the heart started coming out. Miles ran with heart and willed himself into the end zone. Gipson did his magic as unusual and between the two kept us in the game. The coaches have to get the team fired up from the get-go. We have had to many games where the first half is uninspired.

Utah came in with nothing to lose and everything to win. They were relaxed and never look like they felt they would lose the entirety of the game.

I do agree with others on this board that our play calling is very predictable. Though we had 600 yards of offense it is the red zone that matters. You can run up a lot of yards between the twenties, but it is what you do inside the twenty that counts.

I only notice one time the offense went into hurry up. There are just times when you have to use either pace or different offense looks to break the momentum of the opponent's defense. Unless you are dominating you have to get them guessing and back on their heels in my opinion. Swallow your pride and recognize you have a team with nothing to lose your allowing to stay in the game. They never should have gotten a lead or led for so long.

Agree the last play was just over thinking the situation. Just run the ball in some manner. If you cannot punch it in from one yard, then we don't deserve to win.

agree in Ryan Ivey. When we showed up to our seats in the chairback section, he was out wiping them down with a towel. Never seen an AD care that much. Carthel is a great hire for us, even though I'm ticked about yesterday. Our program just needs to take a couple steps up, unlike several years ago when we didn't even have a ladder.

SFA could have afforded Jeff Traylor.
That is the difference between SH and SFA. SH saw the benefits a seasoned coach with playoff experience could bring not only to the football program, but to the school as a whole and they paid a little more. It worked beautifully and SH has prospered in so many ways!
Until SFA willing to step up and invest, we will still be in the same boat 25 years from now!! Pay now and reap the benefits for the entire institution or pay more later!

Bud I sure hope you have enough shame not to show your face in here when we're great under Carthel.

Traylor went from 400k at Arkansas to 800k at UTSA.

You keep saying you want a Willie Fritz. He was a D2 coach who never won a championship at that level who Sam paid 250k a year. Not 400 or 800. Fritz is a great coach. So is Carthel.

And Carthel was more accomplished prior to taking the role. Learn to chill.

I actually look forward to meeting you one day. I would love nothing more than Carthel to actually deliver us like he stated he would do. I dont see it right now. If he does, I will definitely find you and let you tell me your thoughts on my Sawmill posts to my face!

99, your obsession and infatuation with Mr Fritz is , well let's just say interesting. It is also not pertinent to the SFA coaching story as he never coached here and will never coach here. You disavow Carthel's Div 2 National Championship yet clamor about Fritz having 2 Juco Nattys.
So Sam made a good hire with Fritz...they also hired Whitton once....how did that work out for them. Made a good hire with Keeler too. Again that has no tie in with SFA whatsoever.
The repeating of your single thought mantra is basically incessant whining reminiscent of young children....(It's not fair..they got a Fritz and I didn't....why don't i get a Fritz....not fair).

Traylor was never going to come here with the money that larger schools can pay out.

Actually, you do care (or did up until one month ago.) They beat us 10+ years in a row. Evidently they have done something right. They went deep in the playoffs multiple years, won a natty in football, and doubled their enrollment partly because of publicity from you guessed it: FOOTBALL!! We should be watching what they are doing and how they do it!! They have been successful!!

Personally, I don't give a great big damn what Prison Tech has done, is doing, or will do with their coaches or any other matter. Thank God this ain't Prison Tech.!

I stand by what I said, amigo. Perhaps you didn't read my comment close enough.

We have the padded stadium seats for both our volleyball and soccer season tickets. Not a huge fan, but better than toting a stadium seat or sitting on an aluminum bleacher. My opinion.

You have to realize Sam Houston was a good program when they took over, SFA was a literal dumpster fire when Carthel took over. We were coming off a scandal, a coach being fired for misconduct, and some bad recruits to put it lightly.

The fact we've come as far as we have this fast is nothing short of astounding. Yes this season is a down year but if this season was Carthel's first or second season, we'd be calling him the greatest coach of all time. A potential 7-4 record being a down year is actually where we want our program to be.
Give this staff a full offseason and Carthel time to replace some of those we lost in the transfer portal and I have confidence we will rebuild.

The mist didn't bother me a bit. The student section apathy did. Despite all of that we push forward.

My comments and feelings align closely with 76. We have the right AD and the right HC. Defense is just a shambles. The straight out pattern by UT for 70 ish yards was a joke. There wasn't a Lumberjack with 10 yards of the receiver. Meanwhile we look towards a rebuilding year.

I'm a PLF member. No, I do not donate thousands. BUT I am happy to give what I have every year to support this athletic department and university. Even the small stuff counts. The "caringcent" donations make a difference in how our athletes perceive there experience. None of us needs to "do it all" but even a little bit will help push us over the top. New coaches isn't everything. New facilities…. Maybe.

Some of you Keeler supporters apparently don't know that Keeler was fired at Delaware before he came to beercat U.

https://www.wdel.com/news/blue-hen-football-coach-kc-keeler-fired-after-eleven-seasons/article_21a79282-1422-57d6-a486-706c045c8f70.html

I think that Ljacks & Longnecks is the smartest guy on here. Some of you need to listen to what he says instead of complaining so much.

I very seldom are disappointed about or criticize an SFA game but I agree that a pass on the last play of the game was a huge mistake. FG or run were the best options. But they don't pay me to make those calls.
SFASawmillGuy

This as well. Sam Houston didn't get Keeler because they went out and presented themself as a better place than Delaware. A strong Texas school in a weak conference you can win every year was an incredibly attractive opportunity when you just got fired.
Keeler is a phenomenal coach, but he'd probably still be at Delaware otherwise.

It actually wouldn't be unrealistic to say had they not gotten him Clint Conque was probably a strong candidate since he really wanted to go to Texas and had a strong resume.

Not exactly accurate. Under Todd Whitten the Bearkats were 25-28, and that includes 19 games with Rhett Bomar as QB. Just couldn't come up with a defense. Fritz came on board only after Bobby Williams witnessed a Bearkat squad give up during a trouncing in Nacogdoches. I'm sure many Lumberjack fans remember the last BOTPW played on campus. Well, that was the game that sealed Whittens fate. So, in a way, SFA helped SHSU to dump their HC. Exit Whitten, enter Fritz. Fritz won a couple national championships at Blinn and also elevated his DII school- they became consistent winners and even tasted the playoffs under Fritz. His second season at Sam was a shocker as the Bearkats went undefeated in conference on the way to the national championship game. The amount of positive buzz that first run created is impossible to put a dollar figure on. Applications increased, recruiting better athletes got easier, alumni who were not on the radar became connected with the school. Keep in mind that even though more money was spent on the head coach, Sam has historically spent near nothing on marketing.

By the time Keeler was hired the program was pretty good, though- you got that part right. Whitten was hired because he beat SHSU when Tarleton was still DII. Sam took a chance and he ended up being mediocre.

Can you confirm that Fritz and Keeler where not the betting favorites to replace Saban when Sam Houston hired them as some on this board seem to believe?

That's pretty funny. Fritz was the eye opener and truly did coach up the team. Keeler was fired from Delaware after delivering a record most of us would have easily traded for. His story is partially redemption after being fired. The way I see it, Whitten was our Conque. I thought that guy would work out well for you, but as soon as he brought his kid to the team the deal started to stink.

UT is really struggling with their move to FCS. A homecoming game for SFA. I almost feel bad for UT. This game could get ugly.
Some of our players read this message board. I hope none of them read this.

UT was 19 yards from beating Sam on Saturday, but three incomplete passes and a sack ended the game.
I hope they DO see this. If any player for any team lets a post by an old fat guy sitting on his couch affect how he/she plays, they need stay on the bench and give back any scholarship money they have received. No one want a player that is so weak minded they would allow such a thing. None of them would admit to it because their fellow teammates would be POd at them.

Really? Even from that bad angle contact was clearly made outside of the end zone. Forward progress is almost always from point of contact.
