Stephen F. Austin Basketball Recruiting

Pair of 2018 commitments headline productive day for SFA hoops

Have you heard of Mitchell Seraille or Jock Hughes?

If you follow Stephen F. Austin basketball, there's a good chance they'll be quite familiar names in short order.

On a particularly productive July 6th, the Lumberjacks landed their first two 2018 verbal commitments in a long summer recruiting season that has seen 27 visits over the past two months. The duo  - who also happen be high school teammates - together fill two of the three projected open spots on a Lumberjacks roster that has been essentially rebuilt in a year since head coach Kyle Keller took the reigns of the program.

A couple big gets, we should add.

Mitchell Seraille, a 6-foot-7 consensus four-star prospect, is listed by 247Sports as the 41st best power forward in his class nationally. Among all prospects in Texas, he is ranked 17th. Some who have watched him play feel those numbers may actually do an injustice to his potential as a collegiate basketball player. Seraille, who also saw interest from the University of Texas, UTSA, Old Dominion, La Salle, and fellow Southland Conference teams in New Orleans and Incarnate Word, played alongside 2017 signee Cameron Mack in the AAU ranks for the Houston Defenders.

In fact, the whole Mack to Seraille thing is probably worth getting used to:

"Cam is like a big brother to me," Seraille told The Sawmill. "We had a great relationship when we played together." At SFA, that relationship now looks to continue. An athlete who can elevate and shoot, Mitchell can be a scorer and prolific shot blocker. He's not the only Yates High School product who can play basketball, though.

A few short hours after Seraille announced his intention to commit on Twitter, his high school teammate, point guard Jock Hughes joined in the fun:
Hughes is an interesting story because folks around the SFA program believe they may have pulled off the steal of the year in his commitment. "The single most underrated player in the state of Texas," one coach told us.

Confidence certainly does not escape Hughes. "I feel like me and Mitch can dominate in the Southland and make an immediate impact as freshmen," he told The Sawmill after his Twitter announcement on Thursday.

As a junior at Yates, the 6-foot-1 Hughes scored 52 points in one game. He largely flew under the radar in recruiting circles, something SFA is probably quite thankful for, but there is a belief that he could be a huge asset for the Lumberjacks. "A very high-level player," says an SFA basketball source who has studied his play.

The pair of commitments come as SFA prepares to open a season with 2017 freshmen Cameron Mack, Stefon Fisher, and transfers John Comeaux and Shannon Bogues joining a team that finished second place in the Southland Conference in 2016-17. The season ended a run of three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances for the Lumberjacks which included wins over VCU and West Virginia in the Round of 64.

The winning culture has not escaped the walls of William R. Johnson Coliseum. Even without considering the pedigree of Keller's staff, the source of SFA's brilliant recruiting run is not hard to trace. Just ask the athletes.

"My favorite thing is just the culture and the way the fans love basketball in Nacogdoches," Hughes tells us. "It's a great basketball program," echos Seraille. "I'm comfortable with the environment and people. The coaches' loyalty is different. They're more like family."

The general mood around the league is that the 2017-18 title, again, might be SFA's to lose. By adding pieces like this duo from Houston, that could well be the preseason story every year - at least for awhile.

Last year it was guard play and injuries that took its toll. Seems like crutches and boots were everywhere. I believe guard play will be solid this year. Hope the crutches are locked up and stored away. ... Thought Keller did an amazing job considering everything.

Worth noting: slow offensive pace had something to do with it, but only UNO had a better scoring defense than SFA in conference play last year and that's with SFA being dead-last defending the three-point ball (in which luck is a factor).

I wish Leon the best and I would certainly prefer that he was still on the team. I don't want to hear excuses before the season even starts. I can't stand that. I still say though that we seemed under coached many times. I hope he Keller proves me wrong this year. I will be there. We certainly couldn't have expected to be as good as we had been before Keller but he got out coached in that Northwestern State game. We were very mediocre last year. But to say luck was a factor on three point defense is a stretch. Our guards played too far off of the ball and I guess the fact that they were too slow had a lot to do with that. I wonder if maybe Leon was a few hours short scholastically. I don't think he attended classes the whole summer.. I donated lots of money to the tip in club when Kaspar was here for summer scholarships. I hope that shortage of funds wasn't the problem. Slow offense was definitely the reason for our scoring defense stats. Many times we let the shot clock run out on us and many times we just ended by getting off a desperation shot. Some time it just seemed that nobody wanted to take the shot. It drove the fans crazy. I hope that you are right about this years offense. I'm spoiled by Kaspar and Underwood. I can just hear Kaspar screaming to put more pressure on the ball.

To be fair, Kaspar offenses are no prettier than what we saw last year...

Luck is a factor in three-point defense (key word being "a") but there is plenty of room to improve there. I'll stand by my statement that SFA was a very good defensive team last year for the most part. Solid defense and lousy offense equals just good enough to be a contender in a really bad league, like they were until that final week, or basically where Danny Kaspar was most years.

I think it's unfair to say we had excuses last year. I don't think the staff ever considered them as "excuses," but when half of what you've been planning for months goes out the window right when the season starts...that's a huge issue for any staff in any conference. I think what Keller and the staff did last year was great. He didn't have the privilege of walking into a stacked team like Underwood did. He walked into a team that lost the majority of it's best players, had arguably it's best returning player out with an injury, and the rest composed of players he had never really seen play.

Worth noting this: if what I've been told from the horses mouth is correct, SFA's offensive scheme will look nothing like it did a year ago. Totally redesigned with the new personnel.
I assume you mean more up-tempo and guard-orientated?

And BTW, what are Ty and Nathan's physical conditions now that the season is only a month away? Bain has shown some real athleticism in the very limited minutes that he's been healthy and available. I'm hoping he can be a contributor this year.

Bain is ready to go. Ty will be ready at or just before conference season.

Both are excellent recruits, but I expect Seraille to make the biggest impact over the long term. He has impressed in every UIL and AAU tournament he's been involved in.

BTW, Yates HS is preseason ranked #2 in 4A, behind Silsbee, which has one of our 2019 recruits, Jordyn Adams, on their roster. Signing Hughes and Serielle could influence the kid from Silsbee since they no doubt are familiar with each other.. Who knows?

Yates and Silsbee will most likely meet in the regional finals this year. Silsbee has at least three D1 players and Yates has two. It will be a game for sure for a 4A game. Adams would be a great addition for sure. Lots of potential. Serialle will be a beast before his college gig is over.

That's some serious talent for kids who haven't even played their senior season yet. Pretty impressive haul by Keller so far for 2018.

"Mitchell has tremendously improved his game since last season. SFA got a steal."

"@_mitch00 is our vote for the most improved player this year. Nacogdoches get ready for a change."

Mitch Seraille has made the cut of the final 25 for the Guy V. Lewis 2018 POY in the Houston area. Another on the list is Pierce Hellums, a junior from Concordia Lutheran, who was in attendance at the SFA game against Prison Tech on Saturday.
