I don't think Coach V was very happy about the team's performance against a NAIA school, from the bottom half of the RRAC, being down 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th, and having to bring into the game some of the regular starters to get a spark.

But in the end the team got the job done, and you could see the coaching moments, and tough love to get the message across.

This program is headed in the right direction under the new staff's leadership, it's going to be a great program down the road.

SFA (6-7; 1-2) vs. Lamar (10-4; 0-3)

WHEN: Mar. 7 (Fri.) 7:00 P.M. (Freedom Friday)

WHERE: Beaumont, Texas (Vincent-Beck Stadium)

TV: ESPN+

BASEBALL HISTORY VS LAMAR UNIVERSITY FROM MARCH 24, 2006 - APRIL 10, 2024

SFA has a record of 22 wins and 39 losses in the series.

Home Record: 12-17
Away Record: 8-20 (the last win was a 4-3 victory in 2022)

Lamar has won 8 of the last 10 matchups in the series and 5 of the last 6.

It should be an exciting early-season clash against SFA's in-state rival and 2025 SLC preseason favorite Lamar Cardinals.

The matchup, takes place at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, where Lamar is coming in with a surprising 0-3 start in SLC play. After starting the season at 9-1 including wins over North Dakota State and Louisiana Tech, with the Cardinals averaging 11 runs a game, ran into a big brick wall in Edinburg, when the Vaqueros of UTRGV swept Lamar, holding their high power offense to just 5 runs total for the entire 3-game series.

LU has since rebounded nicely defeating American Conference foe Rice 11-7, Tuesday night in Houston. No doubt the Cards will be determined Friday night as well to remove the zero from their conference record, so early this 2025 season.

Coming off their 2024 season, the Cardinals finished with a 44-15 record 17-7 in conference play and an amazing 24-4 home record.

Lamar fell one game shy of the SLC Championship Game in the 2024 tournament losing in the semi-finals to McNeese.

Head Coach Will Davis, knows his stuff and has the Cardinals ready with a balanced attack, blending experienced returners with new talent.

The pitching for Lamar has a team ERA of 3.95 with teams batting at an average of .244.

The starting pitching rotation has starters Junior RHP #19 Riely Hunsaker (ERA 1.26), Senior RHP #7 Carter Sutton (0.87), Junior RHP #33 Chris Olivier (ERA 2.45) and Senior RHP #53 Peyton Havard (6.39)

On the offensive side LU has Sophomore OF #3 Damian Ruiz who leads the team with 24 runs off of 26 hits a BA of .463 in 56 AB. Ruiz also leads the team in doubles (10), triples (1), RBI's (14) and reaching base 44 times. The team as a whole has a batting average of .335

The Lumberjacks had a strong showing in their SLC series opener against New Orleans and nearly swept the Privateers with good defense and strong starting pitching. The bats will need to come alive to get the way too many stranded base runners in the past games across home plate. There will also need to be a more consistency from the bullpen, in throwing strikes to have a chance in Beaumont where the Jacks have historically struggled.

yeah it is a hard decision as the head coach. You want to give some of the reserves a chance to get some playing time, but still walk away with the win. Some coaches will play starters first and then sub in backups, others will go with mostly starters and a few backups and some will challenge all of the backups to step up and do their job if they are called on. He looked like he called the team together and got on them pretty good around that 6th inning but then he also brought in our best hitter and a few others and it turned into a late game cruise which is fine too. We do need to find some more depth on the hitting side in case of injuries or teams start pitching around certain hitters but overall we are trending right direction for sure
