The injuries could be from going at it too much during practice, (the grind) and it doesn't have to be that way.

Coach B. talked about this before going with shorter practices, not over doing it.

In football the national champion Indiana Hoosiers coach Cignetti same way, short practices saying it is not about doing less, it's about wasting nothing.

"Cignetti learned early:
Less exposure = fewer injuries.
Fewer injuries = more continuity.

But the practices aren't just shorter, They're sharper.

Over half the time is scheme communication and job assignment reps.

They're rehearsing decisions.

Practice days are mental
so game days can be physical."

More coaches are moving to this philosophy when it comes to practice.

Intensity of modern competition and year-round training have pushed the human body to its structural limits, they do so much more than in the past and for longer times.

  • Pre-Existing "Mileage": Many college athletes enter the NCAA with "mileage" already on their bodies from years of repetitive youth training, making them more prone to breakdown during the high-stress collegiate season.
"It's not the years, it's the mileage"

They may have ben Kaspar's recruits but IMO Underwood utilized them better, for example Underwood saw the potential in guard Deshaunt Walker who Kaspar used very sparingly, only recording about 7 minutes a game in 25 games as a junior.

In his final season, as a senior Underwood played Walker in 35 games, recording 22 minutes a game, had a season high 24 points (6 of 9 from 3) at Texas when SFA lead the Longhorns at halftime, and it was tied at 60 with less than 3 minutes in the game. Walker became a very reliable 3-point shooter along with Demetrious Floyd.

Underwood had some good recruits Dallas Cameron, Demetrious Floyd, Ty Charles, Clide Geffrard, Ty Holyfield, Nathan Bain, and Jared Johnson

In the end Keller had the injuries, and too much with the subbing players in and out of the game on every little mistake that may have been made, which I felt hurt the flow of the game, instead of letting them play through it.

I honestly don't understand the injury bug with Keller. Unless he is just naturally picking up players with injury histories. So bizarre.

I also think people found the easiest way to exploit Keller's Gameplan. Once that was figured out, it was a downward spiral.

Keller ran a very physically demanding scheme, and I just don't think he was ever able to get the players who were tough enough for it. His practices were also notoriously very physical. I'm sure some of it was pre existing as well.

I just don't think a mid Major long term was the best fit for Keller. He needed to be somewhere he can recruit the type of players who could run his system

Visualization to me is very effective. An athlete doesn't gain value in endless practices but they do continue to think about the movement and flow and their bodies don't forget the conditions. I haven't played baseball in years but I can still effectively catch and bat if I played in a 60+ aged game. Reps are great until they aren't and if you know the game plan and are taught how to know where to be and when then why do you need to run an athlete in the ground. Its about being fresh and conditioned team work to recognize the patterns of both your team mates and your competitors. Also...coaches that lose their s.it over the littlest things need to get a grip as kids know they messed up and just sit them down and then teach by showing them the problem and sending them back out. As a coach you should know who is using you and giving little and who is giving everything but might need a kick in the pants and some patience. Keller is a fantastic human but he refused to adapt to this generation. I wish him and his family well always!!

Well said indeed. I will say coaches can still be major hard a**es and still be appealing to college students.

From what I've heard Carthel is kind of a good example of that. He can get on his player's butts like the best of them, but is also the kind of coach his players would literally die for. It's what makes him such an effective recruiter. He creates discipline but also an environment the players love to be in.

But yeah, I think Keller made an environment where he was tough but also had that "you're lucky to be here" mentality, which really only works if you're at a school everyone wants to play for. Unfortunately, SFA is not a program you can get away with that.

The only real difference between SFA and McNeese is the utter destruction the Cowboys took at Michigan. I guess getting your brains beaten out by a top team is worth more than a team who should have bested McNeese earlier in the season but was on some hellish road trip and then took care of business against everyone else after that game on their schedule up to this point in the conference season. McNeese is not on par with their teams of the last 2 years and should enjoy their bid to the NIT after we paste them in the Conference Tournament on their own home court with more SFA fans repping than their own.

Hope you're right. McNeese has some height. I think they'll be a lot to handle in the conference tournament.

Also good to see SFA and McNeese holding up the SLC high in the mid-majors.

That will be a dragon to slay. Home game for McNeese but the Jacks are capable of getting it done.

Agree. And congrats on penning the longest sentence I've seen on this website in quite some time. Your old high school grammar teacher must be rolling over in her grave.

I think it's dumb that we wrap up on a Wednesday for the finals. Put it on a saturday more people will show up, Spring Break or not.
