SFA (8-5) vs. Nicholls State (8-7)

SFA's only regular season game against Nicholls will take place in Thibodaux. Last year, the Jacks put a dent in the Colonels chance to win the Southland crown by beating them in WRJ Coliseum. This year, Nicholls will try to play the spoiler to SFA's first place chances.

What do we know about Nichols? We match up well?

Nicholls is another reloaded team after Coach Riley left for South Alabama. Rookie coach Austin Claunch has brought in several transfers to help replenish the roster after last year's banner season (15-3 - 2nd SLC). At least seven players have seen action at other colleges, and this year's team has been led so far by two grad student transfers - guards Gavin Peppers and Jeremiah Jefferson. Junior G/F Brandon Moore Jr. helps bring some balance inside, but overall this is a guard heavy team that has had success with quickness and good spacing.

The play a mostly man to man defense which should play into the Jacks hands, but most teams quickly identify our struggles against a compressed zone. However our size advantage should be able to let us win the interior battle (both offensively and defensively) throughout the contest. As always, SFA needs to be careful to not let too many open looks get through while being aggressive on defense.

Our two common opponents - Baylor and ULM - saw Nicholls losing by huge defecits. ULM was our worst game of the season, but in many ways, a slow start after losing our pg was the difference there. On paper (despite ESPN's predictor which has Nicholls as the favorite), this should be a double digit win for SFA. However, the Jacks really struggled last year in an empty Louisiana gym, and there will probably be less than 200 attendees at this game.

It's no surprise that the last two years have seen Louisiana teams at the top of the SLC. Weak scheduling for the eastern schools have given them an advantage, and this year is no different. Our one game against Nicholls needs to be a win.

Haslametrics.com has us winning 71-67....be curious to see what kenpom.com has the game as but from my understanding his metrics are pretty close to Erik Haslam.

Nicholls seems to really have the grad transfer system firing on all cylinders. We did well with Fitzgerald this year but I wonder how Nicholls is able to attract top grad transfer talent consistently? Roddy Peters was power 5 type of player. He could have put us over the top last year come tournament time.
