SFA is not good at late game tackle football.

But I'm sure we will enjoy another moral victory.

So disappointed right now. We were in this game. Sigh.

SFA went toe to toe with a far superior foe (according to records and rankings) for 58 minutes only failing in the last 2 or so minutes.......Yep the ending sucked and it's still a loss in the books but you can see the improvement of the defense since opening day.....offense still has plenty of work to do for sure.
Unlike the beginning of the season this was a good football game to watch from start to near finish.

I agree. Improvements are happening. I might have gotten caught up in the idea that if we won , we could go on a run and end up 6-5 or 7-4. That's all. It gets old "waiting for next year".

Well Big I have to admit to the same thinking during the game...a possible 4-5 game winning streak if we pulled this off.......then again I've been following SFA football since 76 and "waiting for next year" has been a long running scenario interrupted occasionally by a conference title or playoff game.

Well I guess a win on both accounts. Too bad it wasn't one in the record books.

This was a good game. I can honestly say the team we saw against SMU and Southern Utah versus who we have seen the last 2 weeks are drastically different.

Jake is tough ... he is getting hit a lot and he just pops right back up. Sometimes a little slow but hes a tough young man. His decision making is improving and his accuracy seems to be getting better. The offense is just too hit or miss right now. There were drives where they moved the ball well. Then others where they just looked like they weren't sure what play they were running.

The defense is looking tough. UCA averages 450.8 per game of total offense and that is what we gave up. UCA averages 33 points per game and we held them to 24. I think this is the most turnovers UCA has had all season. The defense kept us in the game. This was a great showing against a team that was supposed to roll us.

Special teams hurt us with the kickoff return at the end - as did the penalties.

All in all they are an improving team. With the 4 remaining games, we should end up at 5-6 but possibly 6-5. I think that will be enough for Conque to get 1 more year.

All that being said - I am looking forward to being at HB Stadium next week for the game against HBU.

While improvement is happening it's hard to live off this steady diet of moral victories Like many on this forum I have been following SFA Football since 1980. About the closest thing we've had to extended success is Coach John Pearce in the early/mid 90's. Those were some good teams. Even when they had a bad season they would win 5 or 6 games. Let's hope this week (HBU) begins a stretch of wins that extend into 2018.

I've had enough of "wait til next year" or moral victories. SFA has only made the playoffs in 3 of the past 17 years. Before 2009, our last appearance was 1995. The three times that we made the playoffs in the 2000s were when we had (recent) coaching changes. 2009 was two years after Harper and 2014 was Conque's first year.

I know losing on the field he built stung for Conque last night, but one more loss and we will be sub .500 for the third year in a row. That doesn't sit well or lend to the argument of one more chance. It just doesn't.

As a Cowboys, Longhorns, & Lumberjacks Football fan, moral victories is the name of the game.

I was a student when coach Pearce came over from Texas A&M to take over as head coach.

With the exception of the 1988 and 1989 seasons, those may have been our most prestigious years in football.

After SFA Pearce went on to coach at UCLA and Rice as an assistant coach before retiring in 2003.

I've been around UCA a long time, going back nearly 30 years before Clint got there. My memory is not perfect but as I recall the field, stadium, and football program were there when I got there. This is not to say he didn't do a good job while he was here.

Having said that, he and his staff did a great job the last couple of weeks coaching the Jacks up.

The stadium was there but let's be honest, Conque's success in D2 built that program up

Like I said, Clint did a good job at UCA in particular in the transition to D1 which, as we all know, involves more than athletics. We had football teams in the 80's and 90's that were very, very good.

At this point more than two wins in a row would be nice. Not even sure that we beat HBU..... If the administration is committed to one more year than be it. I've already stated that the expectations for 2018 (if Conque is still Capitan) should be 7-4 at minimum. Going forward I have no idea. It just seems that we are stuck in a never ending treadmill of up a couple years then down for 3 or 4. Challenging to be a fan when we are only decent 2 out of every 6 years!!!!

I remember the John Pearce years as fun and competitive....and that's what I want from my team, to be competitive every week when you take the field. Only bad years he had were his first and what turned out to be his last. As I recall the reason given for dropping him was that he hadn't won any conference titles...which was true...however he was quite a popular coach at least among most fans and I could only surmise that someone in the administration wanted him out. I know I was disappointed and then didn't care for the lateral hire of Santiago from NW St.

I'm just not sure what to think anymore. I have to be honest and say that despite losses the last two weeks, this team is exceeding my expectations based on the first three games of the season. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that all is well. Far from it.

There is something that I think we all tend to forget. Outside of a handful of programs, the FCS is full of parody. Beyond North Dakota State, Montana, and a few others, the powers seem to change every few years. In the Southland Conference there is even MORE parody. I think it is fair to say that nearly every team could beat nearly any time. Every single year, we see some crazy upset that throws everything out of whack.

Programs in the SLC don't typically sustain greatness for very long. The current SHSU run is one of the longer stints at the top that I can remember. There was a period when McNeese was king for a few years. SFA will sneak in every now and then and grab a title. UCA can win, and NWSLA has the potential to grab a title every now and then.

I guess my point is this: It is really hard to stay at the top in the FCS, especially in the SLC. It is the long stretches of mediocrity that upset me about our program. Look at that year-by-year coaching record that was posted on this thread. It seems so cyclical -- as if it has nothing to do with coaching. You can almost bank on a 10+ win season every 5-8 years. We get maybe two great years, followed by 5-8 more years of bad or average. Sometimes a school can get lucky on a couple FBS transfers that boost the team enough to grab a title.

Maybe we there is something more systemic that is keeping us from getting better players. Location? Facilities? I don't know. Maybe we are bad at hiring coaches. I don't know.

I do know that seven straight losses to Sam is unacceptable. I know that while we should have tempered expectations for the program, those expectations should not be those of mediocrity.

Isaac is partially right. Changing coaches every 4 years or so is not healthy for the program long term. I think continuity and stability are keys to building a program. BUT if you allow years and years of average or poor records to continue just for the sake of stability... then that's not good either.

Let's see how the year plays out, but I don't see how true fan or supporter of SFA can be OK with what we have seen the last 3-4 years.
