Typical Range on athletic fees
  • Low end $100-$500 per year (e.g., University of Arizona: ~$100 annual; Arizona State University: $150 per semester or ~$300 annual; University of Colorado Boulder: ~$180 per year as of 2025).
  • Mid-range $500-$1,500 per year (e.g., Virginia Tech: ~$384-$732; many schools charge $800-$1,200).
  • High end $2,000-$3,500+ per year (e.g., James Madison University: ~$3,036; Longwood University: ~$3,197; some smaller or mid-major programs exceed $3,000 to support ambitious athletics).

I recall when I was a student it was a little over $100 that they were proposing. Which with 12,000 students would be about 1.2 million extra a semester, which would massively help SFA in the long run.

Most students wouldn't even notice an extra $100 added to their tuition.

They need to make it very, very clear to the students what the athletic fee is. I asked a couple of current students at one of the games this year what they thought about it, and they both thought the athletic fee meant games were no longer free for students so they didn't want it.

When I explained to them what it actually is they said they had no idea and were for it.

Yes, communication to the student body is the key, they need to have someone knowledgeable and passionate about this to deliver the message in masses.

With over 80% of division I schools already applying this fee SFA just gets further behind, this fee would be like hitting the turbo button on the AD.

As both have stated we need to explain it to students. As well as not have graduating class vote on it. It killed it in 2017 when I was a student because I think most graduating seniors voted in No of it.

Somehow get power points info graphics, meetings or something to explain to students it really helps the university in the long run.

Hardest part is really just spreading the word of it. Knowing it doesn't hurt besides a small dent of 100 or so bucks to your tuition.

When I was a student I remember the athletics department sent out a very wordy email explaining exactly what it was. There's not a single college student who's gonna read all that. The only info everyone who didn't know what it was already got about it was from professors who made it sound horrible and told all students to vote no.

So yeah, maybe have some big presentations or have the student athletes out promoting it on campus near the student center or something could help. Something to inform the kids that there is literally nothing but good things that come from it.

15 starters gone. Will the Carthel-hating naysayers on here revert to their old ways next Fall when the Jacks lose a few? Or will they remember this situation and cut him some slack while he rebuilds?

The portal giveth and the portal taketh. Carthel seems to have used the portal to his advantage over the past couple of years. I'm sure we'll get some quality players that can hold the standard.

I willing to let this thing ride.

I wouldn't be surprised if we pick up right where we left off after reloading in the portal. I also won't be surprised if we have a down year. That's the new era of college football for you. Continuity is going to be much, much harder to maintain.

The SFA media department should produce a fun short youtube video presentation with graphs that show exactly what to expect from your new athletic fee and the benefits to you the student as well as the university as a whole, how it is working at other universities, and becoming the norm, not to be left out kind of vibe, and just send it out in mass e-mails, present it at basketball games, all sporting events, etc. if there is a screen present it, really sell it, nothing half a**.

The key thing we have now is complete alignment across the university. Salaries have improved and if the university administration can find allies in the faculty and staff, this thing will pass.

2026 Football Schedule so far

Sept. 12 - @ACU
Sept. 26 - Northeastern State (9-3 Div. II team, on a current 7-game win streak and First American Bowl Champions)

McNeese has released their schedule, and they're showing SFA @ McNeese on August 29. A conference game straight out of the shute.

Also ETAM's schedule shows them playing us in Nac on September 5. That's a second conference game early on.

I think Carthel reloads the roster and staff and we do well enough to make a playoff run in 2026, but they seriously scheduled us 2 conference games to start the season when we have a brand new OC and DC. We're going to have growing pains to start the season and be thrown into 2 must win games right away.

Jared May just got promoted to OC

"When you look up the word loyalty in the dictionary, there's a picture of Jared May," noted Carthel.

This is the right move and the best move. I'm happy we hired within.

I know most people say it's Rutherford's job to lose for QB, but I do hope we bring in another stud QB for the offense in the portal. Keep Rutherford as the wildcat, and one they may not expect a pass or a run into the endzone.

"Look at me. I don't look like a football player." I LOVE THAT ATTITUDE!" A message to all kids.
