Now, back to discussing the actual game, rather than once again playing the same old blame-the-coach game...

I thought Weeks played reasonably well. His many high throws resulted in two INT's, but he led the Jacks to 278 passing yards and 472 total yards. The loss can't be hung on him, IMO. It would have been nice to have seen what a healthy Maurer could have done. He looked very good in pre-game warmups.

Wembley had a very good game, with 165 yards on 20 carries, an 8.3 average.

If we have to blame this loss on anyone, it would have to be on the defense. They were gassed in the 4th quarter. Giving up 272 yards on the ground was a killer. Probably their worst game of the year.

As I said last week, longtime listener, first-time caller.

We lost this game because of the onsides kick call.

Add this to the number of boneheaded decision by our head football coach.

Let me join Outsider in saying our rivalry is a good thing. I am a Wildcat and frankly I miss many of our old opponents who are no longer around. But you guys are always going to be a good fight in more than just football. Something I liked about tonight's game was both sides had helping hands to help pick up opponents off the ground. I know ACU circles games against you both in football and basketball, and in women's sports as well. The WAC is a better conference than the Southland but so many teams are sort of unknown to us in Central West Texas. So glad we can continue to compete in the WAC.

Welcome rc. I agree with you about playing old time opponents. I remember the old days of ACU, Angelo St, Sam, SWT, East Tx St. The dreaded Texas A&I. So I'm glad to have ACU back around to beat on.....well more often than not. Football and for sure now basketball are quite heated (in a good way). Looking forward to many more battles. Always feel free to drop in on the basketball board when our games are coming up.

In my mind something has to be wrong with Chris Campos. He has to be hurt or something to keep him from attempting even half of these 4th down attempts. Realistically we don't lose a game if Campos kicks all of our failed 4th down attempts. You don't leave an all American kicker on the sidelines if he's healthy. They've been close and a field goal would've put us in position to win or a better position to win if we make those kicks. I get he's 11-16 now on the season but I feel he probably got hurt against APSU or something and it's throwing his kicks off.

If he is healthy that's my biggest coaching question is why aren't we using him?

Thanks. Appreciate your kindness.

You can visit us on CatChat anytime as well. We gripe a lot just as all home team forums do. But in the end, hey, we are both in Texas!!!

Once again I find myself giving up on football. This is getting old. And boring.

Noticed Xavier and Trae were both on the sidelines yesterday for the game taking pics and throwing around some. Wish they could have suited up one more time. Maybe should have snuck them into a uniform at halftime at the very least .

Yeah. Campos never reached the end zone on any of his kicks, and he kicked one out of bounds. Meanwhile, ACU's kicker zoomed every one of his into the end zone. We had zero return yards on kickoffs.

I'm not sure how this team is going to react, at 3-5. I'd like to see some resilience…. Who knows.

Just watched post game press conference on YouTube. Not one -- repeat, not one -- question regarding the decision to try the onside kick. Who are these so-called reporters who don't challenge the coach to answer a tough question about his decision-making? Really? Is that the state of reporting in the Nacogdoches area?

The coaches show tonmorow night will be no different!! Softball questions are likely all that is permitted!! I cannot remember any coaches show or interview in the last 25 years of watching that was any different!!

I wrote a column in the Pine Log back in '87 critical of the way the players were behaving on the sideline during a game. I remember being in Robert Hill's office and in walks Coach Hess. I caught some flak for it, so I took it in stride. Coach Hess leaves the office grumbling all the way down the hallway of the field house. But he never shut me out and from then on I think he respected me. A punk kid who stuck his neck out. I'll never forget that.

Ask the tough questions. Don't be an a--hole about it, but ask.

Funny you mention that, when I was attending post game pressers and writing articles on SFA football I asked Clint Conque if he was planning on giving Hunter Taylor a chance to start after he took over for a struggling Zach Conque. I was basically yelled at during the presser and told Zach was the guy no matter what.

Anyway, I still trust Carthel to right the ship. I do expect changes to be made in the staff this offseason, the extent of which remains to be seen, but the offense will probably see some changes.

If next season we see more of the same, the conversation can be opened up about searching for a new head guy and I think he'd agree with that as well, but you can't justify it if one, you don't have a better fallback plan, and two, he's had one bad season. Last season is hard to call a bad season when we won a conference title.

And bad season is really shown by, as said, 5-6 bad plays. This team he built is probably the best in the UAC talent wise, definitely the best defense if you go based on what we've seen on the field. Those 5-6 plays go differently and we're a 7-1 team and ranked probably in the top 15.

It's been only 5-6 plays every year for the last 25 years.

Not true. This is much better than pretty much every year before Carthel. Before Carthel it was us either winning or us getting beat into the turf because we were either outmatched and/or out coached.

Conque was a good X's and O's guy but not a good recruiter, we never had any depth and had a ton of holes on offense and defense.

Harper was a good recruiter but could not put together a winning game plan to save his life. 09-10 was Shannon Dawson outscoring everyone. Once Dawson left the offense was unorganized chaos with zero defense, and the players will tell you that.

The fact is that Carthel has made us competitive against pretty much everyone we play with a few exceptions, and almost all of those exceptions are FBS opponents(still nearly have a few FBS wins). We are much better now than we've been probably since the 90s.

Good points. Still hurts to consider this could be a losing season. With pretty good production overall.

In retrospect, the onsides kick is the only thing I question still. It may be hard to feel right now, but I do think this is a completely different program than before Carthel - and I mean that for the good. Good teams are always a play or two away from being 6-1, great teams are always a play or two away from being 1-6 - it's always about finishing which we have not done this season. I'm on board with Carthel for a couple of more years, but I put it all on his shoulders. Everything is so much better about the program, except the most important thing.

So 65 said nobody asked about the onside kick. I just listened to the presser and around the 5 minute mark a question is asked that you can't hear and Carthel's reply was that was not an onside kick. It was meant to be a squib kick since we were having bad kickoffs, so just wanted to squib one down and try to hold them around the 20-25 yard line, and it hit the ACU guy right in the chest. So it was indeed addressed in the presser. Carthel also was critical of the job we had been doing on kickoffs.

In retrospect to game, generally when you onside kick you want it to hit the ground and bounce 3 or 4 times. This kick was hard and straight into ACU guy so yeah, likely meant to squib.
Doesn't change final score but possibly clears up what I and others considered a huge blunder.

Not worried about swaying anyone's opinion, just putting it out there that it was clearly addressed in the presser.

About the 5:40 mark in the presser.

Good. Balanced. My feelings also.

I've been confused about the comments here about the "onsides kick" ever since Saturday night. I was at the game, and it was obvious that it was not an onsides kick. When it hit the ACU up man it made a loud thud sound that could be heard at the top of the stadium where I was. Onsides kicks don't do that.

I agree. From where I was, just behind the band. It looked like a squib

Someone on this board got Rob to ask the questions of Carthel at the radio show. It was a hard squib because Campos is not kicking well, and our coverage is not great. Also, there is nothing wrong physically with Campos.

Wildcat here. We know what you feel when your kicker gets out of sorts. Last year should have been a 9-2 season but it was 7-4 because our kicker just lost that magic. He could not make field goals he was easily making the year before. Very frustrating for the team and the fans. So, we understand your anxiety.

I can tell you that we respect your coach a lot and feel like he gets a lot out of his players. We probably waited one year too long before hiring Patterson, but he is a good one and recruiting as well as teamwork is better. Sometimes new coaches work out and sometimes they don't but your coach has done well for a number of years. At least we always expect you guys to be strong and sometimes unpredictable -- a good thing.

I think you are correct Fanatic. At the time I was mostly just furious that we gave ACU the ball in great field position. And we had developed a recent trend of onside kicks in the last 2-3 games. So my initial thought was stop going to the onside kicks so often. Later when I watched a replay it was obvious that you don't kick onsides straight in the air at an opponent. As I mentioned earlier, you want an onside kick to hit the ground immediately and bounce 3-4 times.

That said, we certainly need to work on kickoffs and kickoff coverage pronto. I never liked campos kicking off because there are guys on other teams that will go after a kicker on the return. Surely we have other guys that can kickoff, especially since that seems to be a trouble spot for Campos right now.

We have a backup kicker who took over against NWST after Campos got the record. It would be nice for us to let him take over kickoff duties for now and next season and let Campos stick to field goals.

Fellas, I've got egg on my face. I listened (or at least I thought I'd listened) to that post-game presser right after the game and I did not hear what I should have heard. Not going to make any excuses. I apologize for getting it wrong.
