You are So right RedRiver. The ones crying for basketball will be the first to start complaining at first loss or bad half or lackluster win that should have been by 30+.

I have to admit I have posted more negative thoughts toward football results probably because this season start flies in the face of the yearly progress we have been making on the field. Not my usual MO in regard to football. JSU just transitioning to FBS and La Tech weak start surely gave me hope for a better showing than we had in either game. Really looked bad tonight all the way around. That said now we will move into the FCS part of the schedule, and I'll be here for every game, possibly getting up to Nac for one. No give up here either but lots of work to be done.

And, no, I'm not knocking anyone calling out for basketball but what Red said is so true and it won't take long to see it...unless the jacks win every game by 30.

All of Harper's success came by 2 people...Jeremy Moses and most importantly Shannon Dawson. Soon as Moses was done...so was harper. If Harper was so damn good then why didn't we see him catch another coaching job after leaving here??

Guess that 8-15 record after Moses left had something to do with it.

37-45 in his time here.

He also got us a winless season and 3 straight losing seasons with a roster loaded with talent, including Gus Johnson and JFM.

Actually, Harper had family money and chose not to coach again. He could have easily found a job if he wanted to coach again! Say what you want. 3 coaches brought home hardware. All the rest of were mediocre "saviors" that were supposed to deliver us to the Promise Land and were all escorted out of the building!! Harper was the ONLY ONE to have TWO!!

Where was that when Jeremy Moses and Shannon Dawson both left. Not to mention all the talent he inherited from the previous regime. Harper was an awful coach! Jimbo Fisher has two natty titles, does that make him a great coach?

99. Harper hit the jackpot with Moses. After 2010 it was pure garbage. I don't think JC could find a job. Everyone knows he had family money. He couldn't build a solid foundation. Just facts.

Carthel is the victim of the portal. You can see it everywhere. We didn't manage the portal well. Part of the problem. Losing 3-4 solid coaches over the past 2 seasons hurts.

The portal is horrible to schools like SFA. We do a tremendous job with the portal, we got poached to very good secondary hands. We have a lot of talent, however the team is displaying poor effort. We were missing our single digit linebacker and I never seen where he was hurt. Our lines look weak, but I keep telling myself that the bulk of the extra schollys of teams we have played is basically 20+ additional OL/DL hands. Now that we are back to even numbers, we have to fix our effort, a lot of bad tackling and poor throws is ugly.

Ah yes, I remember that 1-10 1980 season.

IIRC Jim Hess left to coach at NMSU. He didn't seem to realize that the state of New Mexico is where college football coaches go to end their careers.

JC Harper had the stars align for a couple of season but he could never repeat it. He couldn't recruit and he had all the personality of a warm glass of milk.

As for this team, the record may still turn around once they play FCS schools every week. They certainly are not a top 10 FCS team. These aren't P5 teams that are blowing them out. They may still be in the 15 to 20 range, however. IF they make the playoffs, it will be a brief trip.

Maybe my comments are misleading. This year could still be ok. Here's what I expected after 3 games :

Jacksonville State - Close game. JSU pulls away at the end or we hold off a winning drive by JSU
Alcorn State - Al blowout victory. 42-17
Louisiana Tech - Close game. Not giving up 52 points in 3-1/2 quarters of play.

I would have felt a little better had we competed with LaTech.

I think those were very fair expectations for the first 3 games. Now we get an off week then a small school game.
I hope coaching staff can focus on weak spots, make needed adjustments, and the team can come out vs FCS teams more prepared and ready to compete. That's the big question right now...competitiveness at our appropriate level.

I was at all three games. Putting in for hazardous duty pay for sitting through them.

We lost two games to teams that are better and deeper than we are. We beat a team that does not have the talent we have. The concern is not that we are 1-2, but how bad we have looked in all three games.

Special teams is okay, although Quick had several punts yesterday not up to his normal standard. There was that punt return where we had to call time out because we only had nine on the field. Nine. Then after the time out, we only have ten until a guy comes running out, buckling his chin strap. Unacceptable.

The best word I have for the defense is chaos. And, not the good kind of chaos that has the offense confused. The front line and line backers look completely confused. When a DB leads the team in tackles, you know there are issues. The defense "scheme" has succeeded in completely negating BJ Thompson, a potential mid-round draft pick. Not only is he not making tackles or sacks, he is rarely around the ball. Five tackles and 3 QB hurries in three games. Lining him up wide, in tight, or dropping in coverage. It's not lack of effort, and I have specifically watched him on many plays. Whatever this defense is, he is not being set up to succeed.

The offensive line is a huge disappointment. For years on this forum we have talked about how the O line had to improve. This year, it has regressed from the progress made the last two years. Self has not been good. The stats don't lie.

The best teams are player led. I don't see player leadership. I see a lot of frustration. Body language is not good. Who are the leaders? I can't tell.

The good news is that the toughest part of the schedule is done. A bye, a near bye (Warner), then Sam. Two weeks for the coaches and players to fix the very fixable issues, then a week to prepare for Sam. This team still has the talent. Will the coaches put them in position to be successful? Will player leaders step up, or will the frustration and finger pointing drag them down? We will know on October 1.

The Jax are just as talented as they were last year. It's the play calling that has gone backwards. Our offensive plays can fit on the front of a notecard. We run the spread with a TE. So much talent at the WR position but we only try to throw it to one receiver. We can use Xay to help the others. We run 7 runs in a row. On on on and on.

It'll be an interesting season if they can't get out of this routine.

I'd be more optimistic if we had some MOJO on either side. I don't see a sprinkle of MOJO from anyone other than the field goal kicker. That is sad. Things can be fixed, but as you have so astutely pointed out, we are consistently being beat at the line. The D-Line is sub standard.

Excellent observations 76. The O line has not been good. Defense has looked awful most of the time. I wondered what happened to BJ after last season, have hardly heard his name called this year.
Offense somehow needs to open up. Quit running up the middle again and again. Open up the passing game to other receivers. If we actually used our other receivers, then more opportunities would open for Gipson instead of trying to force things to him.
Carthel may have to swallow a little pride and give another QB a real chance if Self continues to be rattled and firing the ball into the ground. Wimbley is an excellent RB, Reed still can perform but the O line and some of the play calling keep them in check.
Also correct about team leaders. Hard to believe that we don't have guys stepping up to that task. Maybe it will change with the FCS part of the schedule coming and the poor level of play we have seen.
I still have hopes for a turnaround but we have a mountain of issues to overcome. Will be a true test of the guys desire to play better and the coaching staff to make some rather major adjustments.
Warner will give them a chance to work on a few things but will not be a true test for the rest of the season.

If the O-Line improves, we could make significant improvement. To me, it all starts with the O-Line. Put a little more pressure on JSU middle of the 2nd quarter, could be a different outcome. Confidence…. IDK. Spitballing here. Just don't understand the collapse.

I cry out for basketball because I love basketball and want to be competitive. Our football team at this point is not competitive. I don't mind the losses, I mind us getting our asses stomped. I mind us not even being in the games.

I don't think there's a single one of us, on the Sawmill, that doesn't feel injured. The pre-season hype machine had me calling for a 10-1 regular season. Clearly, that is a pipe dream.

A nice recovery, would be a 7-4 finish. Make a run at a WAC title. I don't think 7-4 gets us in the playoffs. Nor should that type of a record get us in. B-4 the season started 8 wins would have been a letdown. Only 3 games in, I'd be OK with a shot at 8 wins.

Thanks, 76. That is by far the best summary and commentary that I've read about where the team is right now. (And thanks for putting in the miles to get to the games. Your loyalty to SFA is awesome. The hazardous duty reimbursement check is in the mail.)

Every Lumberjack on this board that Cares about football is frustrated, angry, mad, sad, deflated, depressed, pissy, etc. This is not the season...so far...that anyone wants. It may be a total bust OR maybe the lights come on and the wins start to fall in place. Remains to be seen but most here will hang around and at least try to keep the faith.

As for the post, perhaps I could have said Calling out for basketball. Point of post was and is that RedRiver was So right. Some of the most anxious for basketball will be the same ones posting..."What's Keller doing with that lineup....How are we only beating an NAIA team by 8 we suck....Why isn't that player performing....why is so and so in the lineup.....oh it's going to be a long season....et al.

The post is so Spot On with how the board runs and I got a good laugh out of it. Same with football. Right now all the comments....even mine....are full of despair and hopelessness. A series of wins will change the tone quickly.
I hope they show up!

Pains me to say it, but this is a 6-5 team realistically, given the porous run defense. I hate to see it. But you can't win if you cannot stop the run, which sets up the passing game.

I'm not a coach so I don't know how it gets fixed. It just seems the cake is baked.

That said, I won't stop rooting for our Jacks and I won't stop hoping for success. It just doesn't look good...

We don't deserve any ranking.

The only SFA Athletics squad that should be ranked is Volleyball. Despite the crappy loss to HBU. Still a huge number of solid road wins.

Looks like the voters are viewing our losses as FBS losses which helps us in the rankings. But yes I agree. We don't deserve to be ranked after this past weekend. But it will help us come playoff time when the at large bids are given out. If we win out we might be back in the top 10.

FWIW La Tech played Clemson a really good game and Alcorn State took down McNeese.
