If you’re a fan of Stephen F. Austin basketball and have not heard the name Cameron Mack yet, no worries, you will.

As Scout.com’s 4th best point guard in the state of Texas, arguably one of the best young passers in the nation, Mack signed his NLI with SFA early last week. While newly minted head coach Kyle Keller has been battling some early season offensive issues on the court, his recruiting has continued to draw rave reviews.

Mark down Cameron’s mother, Erika Jasper, as among those on board with the new coaching staff at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

“The coaches are exceptional,” she told me during our phone conversation. “They’re very attentive. They always made time for us. It’s really a family type environment there.”

For Mack, who fielded offers from teams like Murray State, Hofstra, Green Bay, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, and was linked to interest from Tulsa, Boise State, and Louisville, the decision to commit to SFA was largely about feeling at home. “Wherever your heart leads you,” Erika told him.

Ultimately, his heart led him to SFA. His dreams don’t end in Nacogdoches though. “He’s wanted to play in the NBA since he was a small child,” said Jasper. “He’s been an athlete in every sport. He started out in baseball, played quarterback in football, and he loves basketball.”

And Mack wants the opportunity to take SFA to new heights. The man described by his mother as “committed and loyal” is now a Lumberjack, and for Mack, that means 110%. “Passionate,” Erika says again and again.

Keller may see some growing pains during these coming months as he establishes his new team in Nacogdoches. In the meantime, it has been hard to fault the job his staff has done off the court, recruiting and signing exciting players to carry forward the future of SFA basketball.

When all is said and done, Cameron Mack, the young point guard who most recently played for the Houston Defenders of the UA Association, the man whose mother describes him as a “floor general and a leader,” just might be the most exciting of all.
