As others have said, it is common. College bands don't usually travel except to rivalry games, a few special games, and bowl games. Plane rides for a few hundred students and equipment is expensive. When Arizona State plays Arizona, the visiting band is in the nosebleed end zone seats.

Every time we have discussed the pros and cons of an air raid offense in the past, a couple of guys always jump in and claim that it's not sustainable and that a balanced attack is always best over the long term.

Well, UIW is proving that it can be successful over a long term. OK, naysayers, jump in again. I'm sure you have some nifty reasons why it would never work here. (Even though it did 10-12 years ago.)

Eh. It worked for us until we got to the playoffs. That's how it usually works. Not to say the air raid is completely incapable of being a championship system but more often than not when you play a champion caliber defense that can shut it down, you're out.

Montana shut us out when we had one of the greatest offenses ever. So did Villanova. A big issue with it is your drives are never long, so your defense is on the field a ton. The seasons after Moses our defense was ranked worst in the country but if you watched those games it wasn't really that our defense was so bad, it's that our offense would either score in 3-5 plays or we would have a 3 and out or quick turnover. Our defense was on the field more than 3/4 of the game it seemed.

UIW is doing a great job mixing their offense up and having a super athletic QB helps. Zach Conque would've been amazing to utilize in an offense like that because he brought a lot to the table. That being said Sac St looked like a defense we could've hung 50 on that day.

And I'm not taking anything away from UIW, they've recruited phenomenally and their past two coaches have done a great job getting the right pieces in there. But teams that want lasting long term success are much more balanced. Time of possession is often one of the most underrated stats in football.

NDSU will be the toughest defense they've faced all season. It'll be interesting to see how they can match up. If they can get momentum going against the Bison they might be able to give them enough fits to make it work. But those receivers are going to be hit hard and blanketed all night. I hope they can do it though.

And maybe going on about the air raid in general isn't the correct way to argue this. It's more about having a team that's one dimensional, as many air raid offenses are. It's very high risk/high reward. If it works, you've got a dominant offense. If it doesn't, you give basically all the momentum to the other team.

If your QB throws it 50 times a game that's fine, but if a defense shuts down your passing game or if your passing game is just off that day, you better be able to be successful running it. We certainly had backs back in the day who could run but if we had to lean on our running game, it would be all she wrote. Same with Texas Tech under Mike Leach. Same with Oregon under Chip Kelly.

Run heavy offenses can face the exact same problem where maybe your running game just isn't getting going for one reason or another.

You need to be able to get your offense going different ways if you want to win. That's why Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, NDSU, and so many others have been successful running vastly different offenses. They can all get it done multiple ways.

OC: John Jenkins joined the coaching staff of Jack Pardee in 1987 when Pardee became HC taking over a 1-10-0 Houston Cougar team that had a QB named Andre Ware who only had one TD pass in his entire HC football career.

Jenkins scrapped the old veer option for the new run and shoot offense.

1987: 4-6-1 (7th in the SWC)

1989: 9-2-0 (2nd in the SWC) Ineligible for bowl #14 AP POLL

In that 1989 season John Jenkins took over as head coach with the departure of Pardee to the NFL where Pardee would insert the run and shoot into the Houston Oilers' offense.

The Houston Cougars offense averaged 625 yards a game and 10.1 yards rushing per attempt (when they did run it which was rare)

QB David Klingler threw for 5,140 yards and 54 TDs

The offense seemed to get figured out after the 1990 season and Jenkins resigned after the 1992 season.

It all stems pretty much from BYU's legendary Hall of Famer coach LaVell Edwards.

Hal Mumme, Steve Sarkisian, Mike Holgren, Shannon Dawson, Ty Detmer, Norm Chow, Dave Kragthorpe, Andy Reid, on and on of all the coaches he influenced with his pass oriented offense.

From 1972 to 2000 at BYU Edwards had 257 wins to 101 losses, 12 Top 25 finishes, 19 conference championships (10 straight and then another 7 our of 8 run), 1 National Champonship, 7 bowl victories and a tie.

Then Mike Leach developed his offense with Hal Mumme and we all know what he has done.

Lincoln Riley uses it, and on and on

UIW meets NDSU in the Fargo Dome tonight in an FCS Semi. It should be loud in there, something that UIW has not experienced all year. NDSU has averaged 16,076 fans per game this year. UIW has averaged 2,559 per game at home. You read that right. UIW averages a measly 2,559 per game! It'll be UIW's passing game vs. NDSU's running game. Should be a good one.

NDSU has one of the loudest stadiums in football. Not the FCS. Not college football. In football. It's built to trap that noise in there and it's so small it gets insanely loud. Gonna be a huge test.
