Panola College has been officially added to the Lumberjack Transfer Alliance. This means guaranteed admissions, scholarships, and enhanced support for Panola students transferring to SFA.

EDIT: Oops, just noticed that this info was added earlier. Sorry.
These transfer alliances are really great deals. I went to our signing the other day and man it would have been nice to have these benefits back in the day!

Took a guided tour around campus on Monday as part of a TJC group. Man things look awesome! The new caf is wonderful along with all of the other changes that have been made in the last 30+ years. The new forestry building looks to be moving along quickly as well. SFA just has a beautiful campus! As I am sure most will agree.

Your comments are spot on. A pedestrian mall from Raguet to Wilson will be a good move. Probably improve tailgating as a side benefit, from the better foot traffic flow through that side of campus.

It feels like SFA is "this close" to a true renaissance.

A reminder that the UT System will not provide funds for athletic facilities. And, they expect the SFA Athletics Department to dramatically reduce its near 100% dependence on institutional support.

Where is the money going to come from?

Granted I have limited imagination, but I see only two options.

1. A sizeable, dedicated athletics fee voted in place by the students. This has failed in the past repeatedly at SFA.

2. Cut back on athletic spending.

#2 is the approach SFA has taken under Weaver and McBroom, heading back to the SLC and attempting to eliminate some sports. But approach #2 has just blown up with the Title IX lawsuit.

I guess there is a theoretical #3 where SFA finds a billionaire sugar daddy willing to give tens of millions of dollars for athletic facilities, but that's more of a wild fantasy than a plan.

Interesting that the Master Plan calls for a redo of Homer Bryce and a baseball/softball complex but that UT system is not covering those items. Don't see all that will come to pass.

SFA students have shown that they are not going to support an athletic fund. There are those that want to blame academia and the professors but I believe it is simply an economics issue for students and parents.
I don't believe there is a long line of SFA alums lining up with million dollar bankrolls either.

Jackdad mentions big cuts coming.......well what exactly are they going to cut? All sports?

Plus McBroom boondoggle with the cut women's sports has made things even more difficult for the powers that be to move forward with whatever plans they hope to implement. Not a great situation.

Hope SFA can find a way but it will be a long, hard road.

Did anyone notice where the proposed site for Softball and Baseball complex is located.

I know a couple big donors(God Bless Them) getting involved.. So we will see.. They see the big picture for the university like a serious revenue generator in East Texas on the baseball softball fields.. Bring all those folks that go to Texas HS baseball and softball onto our beautiful campus.. They can charge a pretty penny to host a game and bring people on campus is huge for us if we want to continue to grow.. Football stadium will host numerous games itself.. I pray it all works out..I have faith it will..

Hands down our campus is so beautiful and people just need to see it and experience a little of it to love it.. The improvements in the Fine Arts ,STEM ,Arnold Building, new forestry, etc. makes it even more attractive and comfortable to learn in.

IF, and that's a big if, the enrollment and growth of our student body continues, I could very much see some more wealthy donors coming out of the woodwork to try and help SFA raise the money to see the vision come true.

I know SFA has taken some risks in the past that haven't worked out, but I'm a little hopeful that the UT system has at least provided some guidance if anything for us to make this dream a reality.

I agree, SFA is a beautiful campus. I remember as a junior in high school, first coming on campus to a football camp here after already visiting several other camps around the state, SFA felt like a special place. I walked around the campus for a long time, and kind of fell in love with the place.

I'm also ready to see SFA grow. I think SFA is ready for it. SFA is the flagship East Texas school, and has the opportunity to become so much more.

A reminder of the what the much maligned, by some, McBroom accomplished at WT:

"McBroom established a strategic plan for WT Athletics that focuses on the building and sustaining championship programs for all sports, improving the academic performance of student-athletes and developing long-standing relationships in the Texas Panhandle.

During McBroom's tenure, WT opened the Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium, an on-campus facility picked as the top Division II football stadium in the country. Along with the stadium, the Bain Athletic Center also serves as a cornerstone of the excellence of WT Athletics.

Other key accomplishments include:
  • Nine national championships and more than 100 Lone Star Conference and NCAA regional championships;
  • Nearly $100 million in new athletics facilities construction and renovations;
  • More than $40 million in gifts and external support for scholarships, facilities and team operating funds;
  • Top 10 finishes in the NCAA Division II Directors Cup every year since 2013;
  • New attendance and ticket records in every sport;
  • The first institution in the LSC to provide full scholarship funding to all women's teams;
  • A 37% improvement in the academic success rate and GPAs of student-athletes."
This was in Canyon, Texas. I have confidence that under his, and Dr. Weaver's leadership, we will do well in Nacogdoches.

So they would knock down three buildings. That's not really the complex part - there's way too many half-empty old buildings on campus that need to be shut down or torn down. But really hard to imagine both a softball and baseball complex fitting into that area. In fact, even a baseball complex alone I would be mildly surprised because you have to factor in seating capacity, not just the field.

Looking at that map, I don't see how I can take it seriously. It projects a road right through the middle of Raguet Elementary School.

I have been expecting a defense of McBroom from you so no surprise there. What's that saying, "Past performance is not indicative of future results".

I don't share the opinion that whomever SFA has put in charge is always correct in everything they do and do not warrant criticism when they fail miserably. McBroom's move to cut the sports he did appears to have been poorly executed by not even giving the teams and coaches a head's up. By not looking at the effects on Title IX. By axing those sports and the ratio of scholarships that would leave in place. Now he faces continued court actions that will cost someone money, be it UT or SFA, and may have placed SFA in a bad position regarding choices that will need to be made to get in compliance with Title IX.
I can't say if McBroom's move was a shot at women's sports, personal dislike of coaches, a good ole boy move that might have worked at D2 in a small town, or just a blunder at a desperate attempt to slash some budget. Either and any way, it was a complete failure. The golf coach said in a Sentinel piece that it was a shocking move and just felt like they didn't want him here anymore after all these years. Complete Fail.

Perhaps McBroom will eventually find success here, that remains to be seen. Perhaps he was overhyped like his predecessor Ivey who led us into the promised land of the WAC, which also was a miserable failure.

Loyalty and belief in SFASU is one thing, but respect and belief in someone they hire comes with that person showing their talents and capabilities and what they accomplish here and how they do it. Fealty to someone with a title at SFA is not required. They should show their worth, McBroom has a way to go in that regard.

I may not be seeing the bigger picture from all the trees, but what I don't see is room for additional buildings for majors/programs that are growing and will eventually need their own space. I have a vision that some of the STEM fields, such as Engineering and Computer Science, need dedicated space. I know some buildings will be remodeled and repurposed, but will that be enough? There appears to be plenty of adjacent property, so I'd like to see the core campus expanded. Also, SFA should purchase property within Nacogdoches to accommodate any facilities, like research labs or innovation centers, which may not necessarily fit on the main campus. Just a thought!
