5-7 on the season but have lost 4 games by 3 or fewer runs. Just need to learn how to close out and finish some of them but they are battling in every game so far

Correct, the first two games against Purdue, there was solid pitching from starters, Mulcahy and Templeton but no run support.

In the first game against Purdue it was tied going into the bottom of the 7th, and in the second game it was tied going into the bottom of the 8th.

Against Baylor, SFA was leading going into the bottom of the 6th.

At least the Jacks are in these games as compared to last season, but yes, just need a little more from the bats to get over the finish line in some of these tight ones, thus is baseball.

It will come.

give Coach V and staff full season to recruit and he will get even more guys here. Hopefully they get him the stadium built to help him even more. He will win at SFA

UNO is #63 and SFA could have/would have/should have taken that series from them.

The SLC has six teams in the top 100. A tough baseball conference.

UTRGV is #8. What the heck? How do they do that? What is the attraction? Facilities?

It's in the culture, with a heavy Latino population that has a passion for baseball, around 25 players and half their coaching staff are Latino.

They get good crowds for their baseball games.

So SFA is currently in the 5th best baseball conference in the nation.

which is why it is important to remember that Rome was not built in a day. The staff will build a winner here and they need to be rewarded with the new stadium on campus, the sooner the better to get students the ability to just walk to games. More students means more revenue more exposure more lively game environment etc.

Students won't walk to soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, beach now. They get in free.

Got some questions today about the "Pineywoods" jersey as if there's a controversy brewing. Supposedly alumni think that UT is pulling a bait and switch on is with the university name.

Are those just practice jerseys or are we playing in them? Thought I would refer to the experts.

The University of Piney Woods

Oh yes, the Piney Woods jersey plays.

Those have been around at least two years, which would be pre UT.

Thanks guys. I didn't figure that some baseball jerseys were a big deal, but it's not a sport I follow super close.

Are they just trying to be a little different? Any other sports have special jerseys?

not sure I get your point? I did not know students get in free. Like they dont have to pay any kind of sports fee at beginning of the year for a all year sports pass? They get in to any and all sports totally free?

and also all those sports have facilities on campus so why should baseball and softball be stuck off campus?

SFA does not have any kind of athletic fee. Show your student ID, and get in. It's a discussion as to why we should be one of a very few in the state like that, but that's the way it has always been. Or, at least since 1972.

I'm not disagreeing with having baseball and softball on campus if the location and money can be worked out. My point is, students don't walk to sporting events that are already on campus, I'm not sure why baseball and softball would be different.

Just showing the uniqueness of SFA I suppose.

I remember during the series with Purdue, listening to the Purdue radio commentator who was calling the game and he was trying to read what was on the SFA jersey's. After he finally made out what was on them, he said on air that he needed to do some quick research (as he wanted to know why they had Piney Woods on their jerseys), as he obviously had no knowledge of SFA.

He started reading from his research that SFA was located in Nacogdoches, in the piney woods of Texas.

Then he started reading about the tall loblolly pines of the area. lol

Yep, Piney Woods!

ok i understand what you are saying now. Wow to no students having to pay anything to get in to any event. i realize that is a great and noble idea but man it sure seems like it would be putting a ton of pressure on the athletic department to make a profit.

I am sure they have done studies etc, but even a $50 fee would be a huge increase to the overall amount of money in the athletic department. Maybe kids dont walk or go to the games because they are free. They dont appreciate what they have.

I graduated from Texas A&M a long time ago and we still had to pay a student sports pass fee that was good for every sport to go and get in for free.
SFAXE93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You're preaching to the choir, we have gone through this many times about a sport's fee, and it was even voted on a couple of times in the last few years, but the students shot it down both times in protest.
Landman
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah, that would not be a surprise. They will almost always vote for the free thing so admin will have to find a better creative way to convince them in the long run. Or just send a notice out saying that and seeing how many would actually not show up versus how many do now? I dont know any of those answers but man it sure seems like even $50 is a cheap ticket price for admission to every sporting event on campus.

A big problem is that many professors try to sway the vote as well. I was a student during one of the athletic fee votes and had multiple professors go out of their way to tell students to vote against it.

so kind of offbeat from what we have been discussing but is there any financial benefit from being tied in with the University of Texas? Does the athletic department see any monetary benefits or what was the reason for being affiliated with them?

Yes. For example the new Forestry building(now an $85 million dollar investment) is being paid for by the UT System.

That's not athletics related but it's an example of how being apart of the system will help us. They will almost certainly help with paying for any renovations or potential new facilities SFA tries to build, as it just makes their brand look better when we look better.

I'm sure the talks are currently happening about it. I've heard from several sources a new football stadium or at the very least massive renovations are on the horizon, I'm sure baseball facilities are also apart of the plan.

My only add is that the current key for athletics facilities is the completion of the university facilities master plan. When that is done in seven months or so, then the work is to show the value of specific projects to the UT System. Look at what is going on at UTRGV, and other system universities for what is possible.

Donor support continues to be, and will continue to be, extremely important to facilities improvements.

Yeah I just realized how what I said can be misconstrued.

So yes, the UT System will be a tremendous help. We actually have resources now.

But donor support is still going to be the number one thing that can and will help us. UT isn't going to help us without seeing the possibility of a return investment.

I'll just echo what Sawmill Guy and 76 said...

1) Professors definately interferred with the last vote for implementing a fee, encouraging students to vote against it. That still rankles the heck out of me. But part of that had to do with our professors being jealous of an athletics fee because of their not being compensated on a par with profs at other universities. Joining the UT system also helped address that issue because our professors are now on par with their peers in the UT system. They got big pay raises when we joined with UT.

2) UTRGV overall has excellent athletic facilities, and that's certainly from being a member of the UT system and drawing big $$ from it. They're about to start a football program, which would never have happened without the UT affiliation.

BTW, you're an Aggie, and A&M was also a suitor after SFA went looking for a system to join (as were Texas Tech and Texas State). UT's offers were far superior to those from A&M. (Sorry, I just wanted to "gig" you a little.)

SFA:10 (6-7)
Huston-Tillotson:3 (7-15)
Final

It was a struggle for the offense until the bottom of the 6th when Coach V. sent in a few subs to get things going, resulting in 9 runs in the next two innings to blow open a 2-1 Ram's lead into a 10-2 deficit.

SFA 10 runs off of 9 hits, 1 error
HT 3 runs off of 9 hits, 2 errors

Mark Henning was the player of the game with 2 runs off of 3 hits (1 triple), 5 RBI's, and 2 walks.

HT threw 8 pitchers in the game today, which could explain the struggles at the plate for the Jacks having to adjust to a new pitcher each inning.

SFA pitching saw 5 different pitchers, with Garrett Landry getting his first start of the season going 3 innings giving up 1 hit, no runs, no walks, and 5 K's.

As a whole the pitching staff had a total of 10 K's and no walks.

Next, SFA will hit the road for Beaumont for a 3-game series with the Lamar Cardinals, starting Friday at 7:00 P.M.
