Another D2 coach to consider is Brett Ballard at Washburn. They are the current #1 team in D2. He played at KU and his coaching stops include KU, Tulsa and Wake Forest. 44 years old. Seems very likeable.

At some point I would think that McBroom is smart enough to hire someone who has not worked with or for him previously. There are plenty of great fish in the coaching sea who would love the chance to upright this ship.

Hate to see Coach Keller gone but it was time to move on.

I bet there will be a lot of top assistant coaches from Major Programs wanting to come to Nac. Excited to see who they bring in.

I do agree as well but in this case the guy is decorated for success. Unless we have some big name P5 assisstant coach with a great track record of being a HC then Im all for it. But I just don't see some of the names flying around as that. While some are former SFA Coaches I would be all for but I want to see success not just former names.

The problem is we need to temper our expectations. We wanted another Brad Underwood right away. BU lost 14 games and 1 conference game in 3 years. That's 89-14 and 53-1 which more than likely just isn't realistic, at least not with a coach taking over a full rebuild, which with the transfer portal is going to happen with any coaching change.

It's important to remember Brad took over a team with Thomas Walkup, Jake Parker, and Trey Pinkney already on the roster. He didn't need to recruit those dudes. He had them. That's never going to happen again on a transfer portal era roster during a coaching change.

Whoever we hire, they're gonna have a tough time starting off because they're gonna need to rebuild their roster. The second the season is over any player worth a damn is gonna hit the portal and we won't know what we have until the new hire brings in his own dudes a few weeks into his job.

I bring this up because when a new coach is announced, it needs to be someone who doesn't hit the ground running, but sprinting.

Do you honestly think we could afford Associate HC's at Duke or Kentucky? I wouldn't be surprised if they already make as much as we could offer them for our HC position.

True it would be a pay cut for Brooks, but Brad Underwood was the Associate Head Coach at South Carolina when SFA hired him.

I don't think the money would matter at first, it's more the opportunity at getting that first head coaching gig, and what an opportunity it would be to bring back a once prestigious basketball program, not to mention some pretty nice facilities to work in.

I'm thinking of it as SFA being that stepping stone that would lead to bigger opportunities at bigger schools, like Underwood got, who now makes almost $5M at Illinois.

SFA could probably do $450K

Salaries reports I could find...

SFA will not do $450K. I would be surprised at anything over $250-$300K, which is the neighborhood of the mid-major market.

If we're going for an assistant, I don't think money will be much of an issue. If we get a coach of the caliber we're searching for, whoever we hire will absolutely see SFA as a bridge for a bigger program. After 2020 I was honestly surprised we didn't lose Keller, but it seemed like he planted his roots in Nac at that point.

Any coach that leads us to multiple tournament bids is going to get some big time offers and we'll be right back here. It's not a bad thing. If we can get reputation from coaches as a bridge program we can get a steady stream of good coaches.

I'd prefer a juco coach with a lengthy track record of successful teams. That person should be an elite recruiter and developer of talent. More than likely, he will bring his assistants who collectively have the recruitment and development traits. Possibly, the new coach can bring his best players to partially replenish our lack of talent. However, I'm high (not that kind of high) on our two freshmen from Canada. They just need some proper development. Neither played meaningful minutes against Northwestern State because the interim coach needs to win to be considered the next head coach. In his few minutes on the court, Emmanuel easily navigated the press that Matt and Keon had trouble with. Matt has been trying to dribble through double teams the entire season.

I don't believe there is ANY chance of interim coach getting the job regardless how we finish out the season. Strictly a fill in to complete season.
Agree that I would like to see Pangonis and Emmanuel stay and develop here but with the season we have had, will anyone stay OR be asked to stay by the next hire?

I watched the post game press conference. I think the coach (Jasick) wants to win , because he has pride in himself and has poured hours into these men the same way that Keller has.

Unlikely as it would be, it wouldn't bother me a bit if SFA went on a run, and won a bunch of games. Enough that it warrants Jasick getting a look.

I'd have no problem with Jasick as well, and you could get him for under $200K, but the team would basically need to win the SLC tournament for him to even have a shot at becoming the next HC.

This. If we went on a run and won the SLC tournament, he more than likely would be at least top 3 candidates. But anything short of that almost certainly means we look elsewhere.
