SFA (22-9) vs. UNC-Asheville (16-14)
WHEN: MAR 19 (SAT) 1:30PM
WHERE: Ocean Center (Daytona Beach, FL)
WATCH: FloHoops
After a disappointing showing versus ACU in the WAC tournament, the Lumberjacks have been selected to play in the CBI tournament - a mostly mid major tournament that has a history of showcasing teams on the rise. The Jacks have drawn the fourth overall seed out of 16 teams. Fellow WAC members ACU and Cal Baptist are also in the mix.
The first round will be against the Bulldogs of UNC-Asheville out of the Big South. They are a mid-level college team that does not have a win this year against a team that has a KenPom rating as high as SFA. Their last game they lost in the Big South tournament to one of the worst teams in the nation Charleston Southern.
Their offense likes to flow down to Drew Pember (6' 10, F, Jr.) their lanky "big" man down low who also averages 3 blocks a game. Supporting him is their senior guard, LJ Thorpe, their best all around scorer. The Bulldogs are an upperclassmen heavy team. They like to score up close and they defend the three well. They shoot from the line very well, but they don't excel at anything else.
On paper, this should be a cakewalk for the Jacks, but we all know that postseason is never so easy. How committed are the Jacks to fighting for this tournament? Surely they were left with a bad taste in their mouth from Vegas, but are they regrouped and ready to win, or do they want a Florida vacation?
This could be a fun week of basketball for the Jacks, but they have to get the ball rolling with the win on Saturday.
