SFA (13-8, 5-4) vs. Utah Valley (14-6, 5-3)
WHEN: FEB 3 (THURS) 6:30P.M.
WHERE: William R. Johnson Coliseum (Nacogdoches, TX)
WATCH: ESPN+
The Jacks are back home after a long trip out west. Thankfully they have gotten a full four days of rest since topping California Baptist. They turn to face the Wolverines of Utah Valley who lead them by a half game in the WAC standings. Everything says this should be a tight matchup.
Utah Valley is young, tall, and fast. There are no seniors on the team, but they don't need them. They are led by the consensus 2021 WAC Player of the year, 2021 WAC Defensive POY, and 2021 NCAA Rebounds leader Fardaws Aimaq (6' 11", F, So) who decided to polish off his NBA resume with another year of domination. He's averaging about 20ppg and 14 rpg. He is the big man of the WAC.
Surrounding him is a young guard corps whose shooters are averaging about 10 points a piece. They are the best team in the conference in two pointers, get to the foul line a ton, and though they shoot threes less than any other WAC team, they connect the most. Their weakness is their defense where they turnover the ball much more than their opponents.
Kensmil, Solomon, and everyone else is going to have a time controlling Aimaq, but the game is going to be won stopping his supporting cast from scoring. If our guards can beat their guards then we will win.
Posey had a quiet breakout game on Saturday running a very effective offense and defense. We'll see if he can continue to build on that performance. Jossell and Hawkins have been two huge question marks over the last week, let's see if a little rest can get them back on track.
Tonight in cold rainy Nacogdoches it's a shakedown of who is going to stay in the top half of the WAC field. In a tight match, the edge just might go to the home team.
