The Lumberjacks got back in their winning ways with an easy win over UT-RGV on Tuesday night. David Kalcheries led the offense to their highest offensive output in two months against D1 opponents. The Jacks limited turnovers, hit their foul shots, and got a variety of players going after a rough run in with Tarleton. Kensmil had yet another frustrating night and fouled out again, but it's clear that he is being targeted by players and coaches. SFA is looking to keep everyone rolling on Saturday and through the next week.
Facing SFA is four tough games in eight days. The two big games will end next week hosting Grand Canyon and NMSU with only a day between games. But to start the week will be a road test in Huntsville against Hooten and company. Despite having a very tough start to the season, the Bearkats are getting back on pace to having yet another 20 win season.
Savion Flagg (6' 7", Gr., G/F) who played four years at Texas A&M is leading his team averaging 20 ppg and 9 rebs per game. They continue to play good defense ranking in the top 40 teams in limiting field goal chances. They are a high percentage three point shooting team making 164 of 463 attempts compared to SFA's 100 out of 272 tries. However, they are dead last in free throw percentage (56.5%).
SFA and Sam Houston have played the same exact WAC teams in the same places: ACU and Tarleton away and UTRGV at home. Both teams have the same results with wins over ACU and UTRGC and losses to Tarleton. SFA competed about an average of 5 points better in each of the games, but overall they were very similar results. Sam has had the advantage of already playing the worst WAC team (Lamar) twice to make their conference record 4-1. Tomorrow's game will help determine which team will be the front runner of the Texas 4 against the big dogs of the WAC - GCU and New Mexico St.
Sam plays decent ball typically fielding 9 or 10 players, but stopping Flagg will be priority number one for the Jacks. Solid guard play will be a must. Jossell, Hawkins, and Posey will be the key to slowing the Bearkats offense. Kensmil will take over deep, and Solomon has always played well there.
Last time in Huntsville, SFA knocked Sam out of a bye position and effectively ended their NCAA chances. While not as critical this early in the season, this game could determine who will be in the top 4 teams in Vegas. It's time to treat the Bearkats as they deserve.
