The midweek showdown for the Lumberjacks will see them take on the Demons of Northwestern State. The Jacks will be coming back from their first road win of the season and returning home to WRJ where they are unbeaten this season. Winning all three of their Southland tilts by double digits have critics starting to think twice about a team that has passed under the radar during the COVID-complicated nonconference schedule. Facing off against their rival across the Sabine should be no problem on paper, but the Demons are rarely a pushover for SFA.
The highlight of Northwestern St.'s year was the chance to play the undisputed #1 team Gonzaga twice in back-to-back days. In the second game, they lost by less than 20 points. Everything else has been worse except for last game's win against McNeese. Against opponents they are worse in every single statistical average. Their win has gotten them out of the bottom ten teams in America barely. However the team who has the hashtag #processoverprodct (no u?) is capable of getting hot from their guards.
Junior guard Trenton Massner (6' 2") is the leader of the team in points and steals and is a close second in most of the other metrics. Combined with Jairus Roberson (Sr., G, 6' 2") and point C.J. Jones (Sr., G, 5' 10"), the backcourt keeps the pace high throughout the game. The Demons are not tall though, and they struggle with their inside presence. Gonzaga's height had them scoring well more than half of their points in the paint easily.
The Jacks will need to stay focused and not let the records do the talking. Shutting down Massner will be Keller's number one defensive task while pounding the paint will be the offensive priority. SFA has done a great job at staying multidimensional since Southland play started, and this week's home games need to be the proper preparation before the toughest week of SLC play next week. It will probably not be the prettiest game on Wednesday against a McConathy team, but it should be another step forward in the season.
