Overall a good win. Opening game so mistakes were made. Lots to work on but we did see many good things also.

I think Carthel will be happy to get the win, but he can't be happy with the way they played in the second half.

Good win. Lots to work on for the next one. Coach won't be happy about giving 14 in the 4th quarter. All around a good game. Glad to start 1-0 in conference.

My final thoughts on the game.
We played really well for about 85% of the game, which is about what you should expect out of a week zero matchup against a quality conference opponent.
We had some missed opportunities and bad turnovers, but the game was still never really in doubt after the first Lumberjack score, which is a great place to be.
Obviously we need to see more games to see that we improve, but if this is how we do in an ugly week zero win, I think this is going to be a very exciting team to watch this year.
Gavin looked really good for most of the game. The first pick from the sideline conversation after looked like a miscommunication between QB and receiver on the route, and the second was a forced throw. Other than that he was delivering some really good downfield passes and showing good mobility when things broke down.
Speedy Jones is as advertised. Hopefully we see more of him as the season goes on.
Bugs did go down with an ankle injury early, hopefully we get him back before the ACU game.
The defense doesn't look to have missed a beat. They were gassed in the 4th when the offense was struggling, but for 3 quarters they were lights out, and when it mattered they were clutch. Eli Ennis is going to give offenses nightmares.

True. Plus, the offense and receiving schemes may have changed with a new OC making the calls. Learning curve.
Not to harp (I guess I am harping...) but Rutherford made a big mistake at an important time late in the game when he escaped the pocket and, with an acre of nothing but green grass in front of him, stopped and attempted a fruitless pass. That could have easily been a 20-25 yard gain in McNeese territory.

This! I noticed that Gavin did not look to run as much as he did last year. Maybe because he doesn't want to get hurt? There were multiple times where he had an easy 10-15 yard pickup if he used his feet but instead threw it.
How about that Mt. Pleasant Tiger and true freshman #40 Emmanuel Harris 6-4; 242 put in for his first ever college game and gets a sack, then 3 total tackles for the game.
He had 56 tackles his senior year at Mt. Pleasant and 31 of those were for a loss along with 10 sacks and 5 FF.
Surprisingly he flew under the radar and didn't get much interest with SFA and Tarleton State being his only division I offers.

Yeah. That was the one thing I hope better for Rutherford. Looked like a vet atleast out there.

Should have said check down. By that I mean his progression on passing plays. A couple of times (or more) he wasn't able to get to his 3rd option , and make an accurate pass. I think he's a touch slow. Maybe just getting up to game day speed.

I think Gavin will settle in. He looked really good for the majority of the game, but needs to settle down and put together a complete game.
We actually ran a fair amount of read options but he almost always had to give it. McNeese was keying on him and not letting him have a chance to run all night. I would say about 25% of our run plays were read options that could've ended up with Gavin running it, but McNeese contained it well and Gavin always gave the ball.

Think he might of meant "check downs".. Which when a play is called you have your primary receiver and if he isn't open then you have a "check down" to the #2 receiver and then #3 and so forth.. Usually once a QB get to his 3rd check down then it's time to hustle up so you don't get sacked.. Hope that helps..

He had 56 tackles his senior year at Mt. Pleasant and 31 of those were for a loss along with 10 sacks and 5 FF.
Surprisingly he flew under the radar and didn't get much interest with SFA and Tarleton State being his only division I offers.
He is a baller and will do very well in Coach Faske defense.. I have heard a lot of positives on Harris..

I always think of the check-down as your RB so you can at least get some yardage after you go through Receivers (2 WR and 1 TE), and then you pass it off to your RB or your WR comes down to help.
