Players are going to make mistakes. The one that Harmon made is a tough one. The rest of the stuff was run of the mill mistakes that get cleaned up over the season.

But, the unwillingness to play the best odds, is mysterious.

i agree, although I wouldn't call the hail mary a run of the mill mistake. That and Harmon, two massive mistakes, could have still been overcome with good coaching in other areas of the game, but weren't

The Hail Mary was a huge mistake. Imho, the Hail Mary was a result of poor clock management so I don't put as much of that on the players. Although the players misplayed that ball from the get go. Hell commit a penalty….

Give QB McDowell credit! He was almost sacked TWICE on that play (how about some criticism elsewhere besides the Jacks in the endzone) but escaped and launched a beautiful pass into the endzone. Give Marks credit for being surrounded by purple people in the endzone and keeping his focus to locate, catch, and hold on to the ball.
I feel your pain, but it's about time McNeese had some good plays and big breaks after the season they had last year. That fumble return, fumble out of the endzone was CRAZY! That could have just about sealed the game right there. Carthel had nothing to do with that! He didn't tell the guy to switch the ball to the other hand and lose control of the ball. And there wasn't a McNeese player within a few yards when that happened.
Sincerely, I wish y'all good luck the rest of the season. Like McNeese, you have a ton of new players and a new offensive coach. There are things to work out for sure, but give it time. I hope Carthel and staff learned lots of things from this game for them and the players.

Carthel has shown repeatedly he is incapable of making intelligent decisions that result in wins. He may be a fabulous recruiter, but has proven incapable of getting any positive results with who he brings in.

Time for a change.

Jaydon Southard is really taking over at LB, he leads the team in tackles so far.
Qualan Jones could be our first 1,000 yard rusher since Gus Johnson, who he reminds you of.
Blake Robinson is our next great LS.

Keep Carthel as Head Coach, but hire a "co-head coach" whose responsibility will be game-time strategic and tactical management. The co-head coaches will share the responsibility of game planning prior to a game, but before kickoff, Carthel sits in the co-pilot seat as the co-head coach has final authority on play calling, in all three facets of the game.

I was lucky to be there during the original glory years under Sue Gunter. What an incredible time to be at SFA!!

Good to see the interviewers ask tough questions, and not just softballs.

I would have liked to hear Coach take more responsibility on his game management before half. He danced around the question about running out the clock. McNeese didn't have enough timeouts to force a punt. The clock expires if we take a knee or stay inbounds. We ran into the boundary twice after the first down which gives the appearance our coaches wanted to stop the clock to keep the drive alive. Jones scampered out of bounds quick twice. Yep. The play calling at the end of the first half was questionable. I think Carthel is protecting his OC. It looked to me like the OC was trying to get us in position for a long FG attempt. Maybe Carthel feels like it's their responsibility.

This. I was sitting right behind the bench and Coach Ross was screaming at the guys that once we got the ball back we were going to score. Then came down hard on Vidlak after he ran out to bounds short of the first on 3rd down. Ross was just a high school coach, probably still has a little bit of that mentality in him.

Players are going to make mistakes. The one that Harmon made is a tough one. The rest of the stuff was run of the mill mistakes that get cleaned up over the season.

But, the unwillingness to play the best odds, is mysterious.

i agree, although I wouldn't call the hail mary a run of the mill mistake. That and Harmon, two massive mistakes, could have still been overcome with good coaching in other areas of the game, but weren't

The Hail Mary was a huge mistake. Imho, the Hail Mary was a result of poor clock management so I don't put as much of that on the players. Although the players misplayed that ball from the get go. Hell commit a penalty….

Give QB McDowell credit! He was almost sacked TWICE on that play (how about some criticism elsewhere besides the Jacks in the endzone) but escaped and launched a beautiful pass into the endzone. Give Marks credit for being surrounded by purple people in the endzone and keeping his focus to locate, catch, and hold on to the ball.
I feel your pain, but it's about time McNeese had some good plays and big breaks after the season they had last year. That fumble return, fumble out of the endzone was CRAZY! That could have just about sealed the game right there. Carthel had nothing to do with that! He didn't tell the guy to switch the ball to the other hand and lose control of the ball. And there wasn't a McNeese player within a few yards when that happened.
Sincerely, I wish y'all good luck the rest of the season. Like McNeese, you have a ton of new players and a new offensive coach. There are things to work out for sure, but give it time. I hope Carthel and staff learned lots of things from this game for them and the players.

Carthel reminds me of Mary Ann Otwell. Fantastic coach and results at the jr college level, but when she came to SFA she had very little success. Carthel has shown repeatedly he is incapable of making intelligent decisions that result in wins. He may be a fabulous recruiter, but has proven incapable of getting any positive results with who he brings in.

Regarding Carthel, here's my "Modest Proposal," if I can hijack Jonathan Swift:

Keep Carthel as Head Coach, but hire a "co-head coach" whose responsibility will be game-time strategic and tactical management. The co-head coaches will share the responsibility of game planning prior to a game, but before kickoff, Carthel sits in the co-pilot seat as the co-head coach has final authority on play calling, in all three facets of the game.

OK, before you fire off a "that's never gonna happen" response, let me beat you to the punch: it's never gonna happen. Just a nice little fantasy disguised in a poor attempt at satire.

Yes, this will never happen. But, I actually think this is the ideal route to take. Carthel is obviously a great recruiter. In my opinion, that's the hardest part of college football. Hire somebody else to manage the areas he is not so great at. Maybe that is hiring decisions (I did not think Storm was the right guy from the jump. We will see with the new OC), or maybe that is game management, or maybe it is something behind the scenes that we don't see. Either way, I think this would work. Unfortunate that it won't happen.

Finally listened to game presser. A mixed bag for sure. Glad to see Carthel was sort of forced to talk about the muffs and The fumble etc.
He mentions maybe some overconfidence among players going in....mentions several plays that we failed to execute as drawn up and lack of a killer instinct. I can't speak to overconfident players but failed execution of plays happens of course, players make errors of course, not every play runs as to script. The points he made in that regard are fair points. He plays down the record pointing to UIW and Nicholls starting records. Okay but McNeese was a conference game. Points out that not going for FG when up by 10 was not the correct analytical call due to game situation at that time and circumstance. Yes up by 13 one can still lose if opponent scores 2 TDs, and PATs, BUT it also eliminates FGs from their offense and forces going for 6.

OTOH, not that it should have been expected but what many of us see as coaching blunders were not brought up. Yes perhaps the QB was supposed to run toward the middle of the field instead of to sideline before we punted into the hail Mary disaster, BUT maybe with so little time left we should have taken the knee and our 10-0 lead to half.
Perhaps we should not have turned sooo conservative in the later portions of the 2nd half on offense. Abandoned the pass and kept it on the ground. 3 or 4 times in 2nd half we would gain 6 to 7 yards on 1st down and then run the ball twice more failing to get the other 3 yards. One can certainly blame execution of said runs but I would ask why did we change what we were doing earlier on offense--mixing things up.
Prevent defense was also a huge failure. McNeese handled it correctly...taking what the defense allowed and moved the ball to the last 2 touchdowns. What happened to the Aggressive defense. We got to the UNT QB several times...why did we not get to the McNeese QB.
Of course play calling and defense schemes are more subjective and open to proper execution on the field,
BUT the clock management before the half still has to come down on the coaches. Carthel mentions the punt returner not playing it properly and costing much field position. Yes that is exactly what happened SO, have the special team coach ride the players butt for the lost field position, then as a Head
Coach, come to grips with the fact you are now way back inside your 20 and have lost the opportunity to grab more points and run the clock and exit half with lead and in control.

No, we haven't forgotten last season, but now it's this season. The Cowboys are 2-2 and except for poor clock management at the end of the Tarleton game, could be 3-1.

No, I don't do those hallucinogenic things. But stranger things have happened. This is football after all and very early in the season. I can dream (without the mushrooms.)

Trying to trip a guy that's walking away. Kicking a helmet to the sidelines intentionally.
Does this team have no maturity or do the coaches not instill any discipline? If I were a McNeese fan, I would have been furious with the idiocy of these players. When SFA commits a stupid personal foul or unsportsmanlike I'll have a post up in 10 seconds calling the guy/team out.
