While I enjoy your optimism Sawmill Guy, to say that we 100% should have won the game is a bit of a stretch.
For that to be true the offense would have had to do a much better job than they managed to do. The O line got a good lesson in football from the UNT defensive front. Most running plays were stymied to a one yard gain.
We failed several times to gain that 1 to 2 yards needed on a 4th down. Offense was far too inconsistent last night and didn't earn a first down until well into the 2nd quarter.
Looking at the overall picture at UNT--I was pleased that we were competitive for the whole game. Very pleased with many aspects of the defense play. Offense was held in check outside of a few pass plays, has lots of work to do.
I hope and expect the offense to rise up now as we head into the FCS part of the schedule, but they did not deliver a winning hand last night.

I agree totally, you have an All-American PK that can get you points and chip away at the lead.

Get what Carthel is doing going for it at times, (no guts no glory) easy to criticize on the hindsight, but seems points are left on the table.

Doesn't matter though, that 80-yard UNT TD run was the killer.

1st Q - SFA on the UNT 45, drive stalls at the UNT 36, turnover on downs, possible 3 points
3rd Q - SFA on the SFA 25, drive stalls at the UNT 26, turnover on downs, possible 3 points
4th Q - SFA on the SFA 25, drive stalls at the UNT 24, turnover on downs, possible 3 points (14:16 remaining)

1 for 6 on 4th down
This 100% there was 3 times were a Field Goal would have been suffice but yet we went for on fourth when it wasn't needed at all. Like JUST KICK IT!

I personally don't have a problem with going for on 4th down for this particular game. It was non-conference and gives the coaches an opportunity to obtain in competitive situational play film to evaluate. Utilizing the film to prep for when it counts in conference play going for it on 4th down. I would have expected better than 1 in 6 even considering UNT quality defensive players across the line from SFA. The pass to the running back on fourth down was open but unfortunately dropped. The other short yardage plays on 4th down the coaches need to determine was the offensive line out match, blocking technique wrong or can a wrinkle be added to get those 1 to 2 yards. We had trouble up the middle most of the day.
I expect in conference play unless we are over matched the decision would be different for a few of the situation seen in the UNT game.

So we have 1.5 close quality losses on the year. I would count McNeese as a full quality loss but after what HCU did to them, they only get half credit.
