Unfortunately, he's had one beautiful long ball but thats about it.

Their special teams are giving this game to us. There will be some butt-chewing in San Angelo next week. And undoubtedly some in Nacogdoches, too. There had better be!

Self has had a bad game. Part of that is the make shift O line. Still, not good.

Strange game. Up 19 in 4th and offense has been a cluster except for couple of big plays.
Not going to work vs ACU next week.

A cluster? I think your spell checker must have changed the word "disaster".

Probably still too early to bring in someone else to QB, but Self needs to be replaced.

We do need to credit the defense tonight. They were on the field a lot tonight and after giving some ground early, really seemed to clamp down as the game wore on. I think those back to back sacks in the 2nd qtr got the D going...that and likely some adjustments by staff.

I didn't think ANYTHING could irritate me more than SF Austin, but Stephen FA did it.

Didn't watch the game. Just looked at the stats. *** ? *** ? Self looked good against UTSA. At least he was making progress. Now I'm totally confused.

I agree it was rough for Self. I don't pretend to know everything about football but I was confused by him only looking to and throwing to the left side. It was more obvious tonight. That said, I hate to say too much
negative about players. In my mind, the buck stops with the coaches. Play calling continues to be a mess.

I truly believe we have the right head coach in Carthel to go to the next level. The OC - not close at all. He is very predictable, does not use the weapons, except Xavier. That young man is incredible but he is one player. What happens when our competition is equivalent and they put their best player on him or double team him. Where will you go OC? Xavier has bailed the OC and an Self out so many times. Self is not accurate, has really bad mechanics and will seldom look at any other receiver. He is the qb because this staff picked him and they are afraid to try something else. Why not? This season does not count. See what you have so when it does count you are sure you have the best.
Yea we won but got our tails kicked. You could see it in several of the players faces afterwards. Hope things get better soon.

Good insight Jack Purple. The two games I've watched had me alternating between absolute joy and complete frustration. Yes the defense looks better. But without significant improvements in the offense, we are barely a middle of the pack SLC squad. Maybe 4th place. If we don't beat Sam next year I think I'll choke myself. We have to get better.

I really do not believe he has the ability or talent to look at more than one receiver - especially on the left side

I get the deserved criticism of Self. However, the offensive line is key for me to whatever QB we have. Ward is a heck of a good running back. He rarely has anything resembling a gap to run through. So, we also have very little running game.

Two offensive linemen have played all five games. Throw in that we started a freshman TE Saturday that was playing his first college football game ever. Losing our center, Lapic, at the end of the WT game was huge. The offensive line has to become a unit. They haven't played together enough to accomplish that.

I'm not ready to throw Storm out. He was the OC on a D2 national championship team, so he has had success. I don't think we have a chance at offensive success until we get an experienced, quality front six regardless of who the OC is.

4460, what do you think?

Thank you. I've been a lurker forever and have never been motivated to join until last night. I have attended many games through the years and this one was strange. We won but I saw little celebration in the stands and between players. I'd say that the scoreboard had us winning but the game didn't. I'm still a big fan of Carthel and think he can get the job done. He's just got to utilize more of his players and be more dynamic with the play calling, IMO.

I'm with you on both counts. Carthel is a great motivator. But one can't motivate a bunch of grapes into becoming wine.

(That's my entry into the 'Quote of the Day' contest, Nacluth. Am I a winner?)

And I'd also like to get 4460's take on the game and on Self.

ASU's head coach is just a tad miffed at his special teams play, as he should be. He doesn't specifically say so, but he thinks they should have won the game. (And he's probably right.)

I think it was a lackluster performance by the whole team. It seems like we couldn't put it together for an extended amount of time like we should when playing down in opponent size.. I feel this was evident on the first possession when we couldn't even punch it in with our huge OL.. We will get there but when you have a big play at the first of the game like that kick return and then come out with 0 pts and then your D let's them out of the hole.. You don't have that killer mentality yet.. we might of been a little over confident not really sure..Defense still having some issues of getting off the field after 3rd down...Safety play was better with Myles and Davis back.. Seems like when D wants to turn it on they can but they just don't do it on 3rd down enough.. Guys we are still really young and are going to be really salty.. Once Stoner gets 35-40 lbs on #3 he will be a NFL draft prospect.. He is way quick and gets off the ball fast.. He seems to be the vocal leader of the D likewise.. Marjie played more this game and is getting better.. Big Carl is coming along and was in on more run situations.

I think ASU defense was giving Tre problems in that he didn't know where they were coming from and they disguised coverages really well.. Their 2 safeties were SR's with lots of experience. I saw more than a few times if he would of read his progressions then one of the WRs were always coming under across the middle and would be wide open.. Yes that would probably only be a 6-8 yd completion but if the reciever breaks a tackle then he is off to the races.. ASU was very well coached and it shows you that depth is where it is all at.. When the game started getting late we could impose our will a little more especially on D..Same kinda thing we face when we play the bigger boys.. We need to go recruit Tre some competition this year.. He will welcome it and it will help get him better.. He is still our leader and will work on his mistakes harder than anyone I can promise you that..ACU is the real test to me on how our team has progressed.. Bigger stage in Arlington and the WOrld Series next door will create a buzz.. I feel we will be really healthy by that time and all hands will be on deck.. no excuses we are playing someone our size.. Coaches are gonna have our boyz Jacked up to play..

You are spot on about the OL 76.. it all starts there and Ward is a heck of a RB but never has room to run.. 2 true soph and 1 true Fr were in the middle of the line..That true for us a beast too..Them jumping off sides 2 times in a row shows you mentally they weren't into the game at that point in time..which isn't good.. We are young and the line is so much better and next year they will be leading our team..

I agree that Storm is not the problem. I had an old offensive coordinator in high school I'd bounce trick plays off of and he always told me "you can have the Xs and Os but if you don't have the joes it won't work".
At skill positions I think we're as good or better than anyone, maybe even some of the FBS teams we've faced. But on the offensive line we do have injuries and inexperience up front, which causes us to be unable to get a running game going.
Our offense is predicated on being able to set up the pass with the run. It's the same offense that NDSU, Alabama, and all the schools who are consistently on top uses. But if you can't make the parts move it won't work.
I would much rather us get this offense right than go back to an air raid offense that works until we face a juggernaut who knows how to stop it.
I will not get my hopes up like I did on that cold, cold night in Montana a decade ago....
