SFA (0-1; 0-4) vs. LAMAR (0-1; 2-2)

WHEN: SEPT. 28 (SAT) 6:00 P.M.
WHERE: BEAUMONT, TEXAS (PROVOST UMPHREY STADIUM)
TV: ESPN+

Lamar, the darling of the 2018 SLC season looks to bounce back after a hard fought 34-45 loss at #21 Southeastern Louisiana.

Senior QB #1 Jordan Hoy, last season's SLC New Comer of the Year has accounted for 990 total yards of offense and 10 TD's 4 games in the 2019 season.

The Cardinals will look to exploit the Lumberjacks weakness on defense, the run, averaging over 200 yards a game on the ground.

If SFA can get Lamar into 3rd and long and force them to pass, the defense can take advantage of a Cardinal offensive line that has struggled in pass protection, giving up 9 sacks, as well as an offense overall that has converted only 33% of their 3rd down conversions.

The two SLC "paper tigers" from a year ago - Lamar and UIW - are getting their just desserts served to them this year. Let's hope the Jacks can continue that trend.

And don't be fooled by Lamar's gawdy offensive numbers. Most of them came against mighty Bethel University (an NAIA team) and Mississippi Valley State.

Well, we have the 2nd worst defense in America.

Last year, Lamar QB ran for 225 on us.

Not that this is breaking news, but I don't like our chances of getting enough stops to win, so were gonna have to score just about every possession, and not FG's, but TD's.

But on a (slightly) positive note, we're 69th in total offense.

In the Southland, we're 8th in total offense at 375.2 per game and 11th in total defense at 544.8.

It also looks like there are only six teams that have been on the field for more defensive play than the Jacks as well.

Lack of bodies plus being on the field a lot doesn't help either.

We're certainly better advanced on offense.

I was actually very happy with our offense against Nicholls, we just didn't finish drives.

Too may FG's and not TD's will kill you.

Our defense is a victim of circumstance right now. Injuries and intelligibility has hurt us so bad this year. Without the intelligibility alone I bet we're 2-2 or maybe even 3-1. Starting 2 true freshmen walk-on players on the defensive line puts us basically in a no win situation.
I know everyone hates to hear "next year", but next year we will be dangerous. This season, I think we still Rattle off a couple of wins.
Anyone have any updates on our intelligible players? s btw?
SFAJack_76

No update on the ineligible players.

We lost at least one more starter for the season to injury in the Nicholls game. Practice has become more challenging due to the fact that so many of the scout team guys are now playing.

I'm still not sold on the "injuries and players" are the main reason for our defensive struggles. It seems our scheme is questionable, at best, at times...like, why are we playing press man with no safety in the last 30 seconds of the half against TSU...a play that results in a 50+ yard TD, when clearly the WR from Tarleton was superior to our CB, yet we constantly left them in 1v1 matchups.

By no means does the loss of the players help, but we've made very little adjustment in the scheme to try and mediate those losses.

I'm not a coach, don't want to be one, way too stressful, BUT...if we know we are thin on the D-Line and we are CONSTANTLY being dominated up there, why do we continue to run just three and four man fronts? We literally have nothing to lose, why not stack a nose guard, two 3 techniques and two five techniques? Make them block a five man front.

Look, I get it, it's easy for me to armchair coach, but it seems that the players we do have, the one's that are playing aren't being put in a position to succeed, at least not constantly enough.

It looked to me like Carthel has modified the offense to fit the skills of the players around. I noticed that he had Trae on the move much more in the Nicholls game. It appears to fit his skills to be on the move more that standing in the pocket.

To me, some of the errors on defense are not because of the players but because of the scheme issue directly from the coaches.
SFAJack_76

Nineteen offense players have been in all four games. Fifteen defensive players have been in all four games. Some of those on each side of the ball will not play Saturday due to injury in the Nicholls game. This is truly a pieced together team that is not anywhere near the team the coaches thought they would have on May 1.

They are not making excuses. Just facts.

Let's turn on the light. We had 4 interior lineman and 4 de TOTAL. We lost 2 de against Nichollls. So the five man front your speaking of is a great idea, they just need to decide which one sits out. That one guy would never see the game cuz Lamar would never huddle and it would be very uptempo. That's a position I'd hate to put these men into

Look, I'm with ya. It's a horrible spot. But, just as horrible is running the same defense out there, with no changes.

It's why we may end the year with the worst defense in America.

I'd like for us to try something, ANYTHING, that can produce some level of success, even if it's a radical idea.

They made tons of adjustments throughout the game. They started sending DBs and LBs on blitzes literally every single play and it helped us slow down their running game and get pressure on the QB, which is why we had such a good 3rd quarter. But it also puts us almost always in one on one situations in the defensive backfield, and that makes it hard to limit that one explosive play that can kill you.

We're just in a bad spot. Everything that could go wrong with this team has, and none of it is the fault of the coaches or players.

Have the coaches made no bad decisions all year? No. That last drive against SUU was one of the most confusing coaching decisions I've seen. But this team, despite being winless, looks miles better than previous years.

Never mind.. sheesh... what else can go wrong... no time to feel sorry for ourselves.. gotta keep moving forward... Our program was pure trash and HILL should of been canned a long time ago for letting it get to this point... Horrible coaching decisions and I feel if he was still here that Conque would of coached last year... Just a bunch of horse shi*******... I had a discussion with one of the SFA players after Saturdays loss to Nicholls. I told him exactly how I felt about the season so far. He told me straight up that they will run the table for the rest of season. He said they were getting closer and closer to where they need to be and it's time to let it loose.

Sometimes it just takes one player to inspire a movement and maybe those words were repeated to his teammates and they'll rally behind their coach and put together some wins despite all these injuries, ineligibilities and other issues.

Oh yes of course SLC play just began. It's a long road, but if your SFA, you gotta have the mindset that every game from here on out is a must win. You can't really afford any more losses in their case. It's that time to press down on the gas and keep it there for awhile. No letups.
