SFA (0-2) vs. SOUTHERN UTAH (0-2)

WHEN: SEPT. 14 (SAT) 7:05 P.M.
WHERE: CEDAR CITY, UTAH (ECCLES COLISEUM)
TV: PLUTOTV (CH. 536 SUU)

The Lumberjacks take on the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah, two teams with a couple of things in common, very young, Southern Utah with 46 freshmen and only 10 seniors to SFA's 62 freshmen and only 16 seniors, while experiencing losing streaks of 7-games for SUU to SFA's 5.

In the last meeting SFA was embarrassed at home 13-51 against a Thunderbird team that really over achieved finishing the season 9-3 and earning a spot in the FCS Playoffs.

Now Head Coach Demario Warren enters his fourth season at SUU and looks to bounce back from a dismal 1-10 2018 season that has carried over to an 0-2 start in 2019.

One losing streak will end this Saturday.

So, Quick has an amazing 36-yard average. There are about 200 high school punters in Texas who have better averages than that.

I'm just looking for improvements this game.

1) Get in the endzone. Can't settle for field goals.
2) Don't give up the big play.
3) Improvement from both lines. Better protection and run blocking for the offense and a better push and pressure for the defense.

Not sure what to do about the punting game though. I do know the Longview quarterback looks like a better punter than Quick.

I hope Power gets back to aggressive play calling on defense. I would also like to see Cam Arnold or Preston Weeks get the start at QB. Trae Self just can't hit the side of a barn. Not sure if he is just nervous or reluctant to throw the ball but it seems like that's the one part of his game that isn't really clicking.

If we lose this game we will have completed the trifecta of FBS, FCS, D2 losses in just 3 games. Hopefully we aren't on the losing end this week.

I hope to see some of the fire we had against Baylor back. Offensive line actually did pretty well against Baylor but not against Tarleton. Idk what was different but I like to think Tarleton was a fluke for them.
Everyone is complaining about Trae Self but honestly there's a reason he's the starter. In practice he looks amazing. He's the best QB in practice. But having played before, I know good practice bodies are not always good products on the field, so I say Trae is in the hot seat. If by halftime against SUU Trae is still struggling, I think Carthel should consider pulling the trigger on Cam.
Really I think Tarleton was just an example of a D2 team doing everything right and us not playing to our potential. I've spoken to a few people and they all agree, had we played Tarleton as good as we played Baylor we would've won that game by multiple scores. Defensively we were out of position much more than we were against Baylor. Pass protection was spotty at best. And we looked a little more tentative on both sides of the ball.
All of these things are likely a result of the massive amount of freshmen we have on this team. From what I've seen so far though, if we can retain a lot of these kids they have the potential to develop into monster players. Just give it time. We're gonna win some games this year, we may get some huge upsets and I think by the end of the year the hype will be real for next season.
Until then, at least we're not NWST(RIP).

That is so true about looking good in practice and not so much during game time.

There are many players who don't show it at practice, but when they are put in real game time they come alive, like they feed off the energy of the game that they can't get during practice.
nacluth

We had plenty of opportunities to win the Tarleton game with just slightly better execution. The two offensive sequences in the second quarter where we had the lead and could have extended it ended with poor execution - not great defense. Then, the score before halftime by TSU was the straw that broke the game's back.

Sounds like Carthel welcomed number three child in this week. I'm very happy for him and his family. I'm sure he doesn't get much sleep normally during the season, but this week I'm hoping Storm and Power deliver a simple and effective game plan.

The Lufkin WR committed to Texas Tech is a better punter than Quick. I know there were other higher priorities, but I don't know why this wasn't addressed in recruiting. Since Carthel is the special teams coach, this is on him.

True. We all know that field position is a critically important part of football. Quick is not cutting it on gaining field position. Hard to believe there's not anyone on this team that can top that. The SLC shows him with a 34.2 average and a 33.1 net. That's next-to-last in the conference. Can't sugar coat it -- that's just plain bad.

And FYI, SFA is sitting at 9th in the conference in total offense at 345.5 per game and 11th (dead last) in defense at 595.5.

9 games to go. Sam Houston's numbers got massiveIy inflated playing an NAIA school this week.
Not saying we shouldn't expect more at this point, but give it time. We have a team of freshmen. They're talented but very raw. They'll get there.

As far as Quick is concerned it's very strange how bad he's been. The dude talentwise our best punter...in practice. Similarly to Trae Self, maybe he needs time to get the game day jitters out and start playing like he practices....

SUU's website says it will be on Pluto's Channel 536. (Interesting... As of this morning, there is no Channel 536 on Pluto TV. I assume it will magically pop up at the appropriate time tomorrow.) There's a link on the SFA Athletics page (on the FB schedule) that should take us there.

Losing two NFL hopefuls & senior leaders with Alize & Pace is gonna hurt this team immensely down the stretch.

Any chance we get Pace back this season?

Cross your fingers we will hopefully have him back after sitting the first 5 games.. I feel for the kid... He is our #88 like Tarleton has... Pace is that good and has worked his ass off under our new coaches and has gotten nothing but better.. Glad he has faith in the good Lord because he did nothing wrong and neither did this staff..

If you don't know, that's ok, but what are the working theories?

Not the kids fault they are ineligible to play and this was previous regimes doing or lack of knowledge.. We might get a couple back after game 5 (Pace,LeGarde).. Its in the NCAA hands and you know how that goes... Hasnt been any official statement by school but I am sure one will come some time..People not doing their jobs allowed this to happen.. I am confident our new leaders will get this handled the correct way and move forward...

So am I to assume that this is some sort of compliance issue? Like academically speaking? Were they taken classes that were not adequate for eligibility?
Correct. You must have missed comments in other threads. They were wrongly advised about what classes to take to be academically eligible. As was stated, the student-athletes did nothing wrong. They only followed the wrong guidance from one or more adults.
