Just glad we didn't get blown out.

And we're one week closer to basketball.

Jake didn't have a bad game, but he had several drives he didn't finish. Several passes he missed wide open guys. Several plays we needed 10 yards he threw 2 yards when he had guys open. And then really 3 critical turnovers. We held UCA in check the entire first half except for that fumble return that put them in position to score. The pick before halftime was overthrowing an easy completion to put us in field goal range. And then in the end he badly underthrew his man, but that was more of a desperation play so I won't blame him much on that one.
Our offensive line is god awful. Whoever played at QB was gonna get beat up today. Our running game was literally non existent. But the fact is we still could have won this game if our QB could've kept those drives alive.

Our defense doesn't deserve this team. Our defense is borderline national championship good(when everyone is playing), but our offense is a mess. Bad on the line, really massively inconsistent with catching passes and just being absolutely unable to finish drives.

Oh well. On to the next one.

If this is true(I've only listened to the games), shouldn't we strongly consider retaining Byrd as DC?

SFA 03. I agree with your assessment. Almost entirely on point. I don't understand why our offense is so bad other than I believe "Clint's" only objective was to get his son in the NFL I might be off base but it certainly seemed like our offense in 2016 and 2017 was geared around him.

I'll agree that we are a decidedly better defensive team than offensive, but saying they are or even have the potential to be a national championship caliber (as seen so far) is hyperbole. Quin Jones, Alize Ward, Ryan Woods and others I can't pull the names of are beasts, but this defense blows assignments in the passing game giving up huge yardage every game and our run defense is still lacking consistency. Individually we do have good tacklers but as a unit, this defense is a solid B-B+.

Honestly time of possession is not a problem with this team, so it's not like the defense is always on the field, but we are prone to give up big plays. So every fourth defensive stand, we're giving up points. Two targeting ejections in two weeks isn't great either. I'm not down on the defense, but there's not any rings coming soon.

I don't think Clint wanted to get his son in the nfl as much as just trying to make everything work best with Zach in at QB. Zach was legitimately a very talented QB, but his talents were best utilized in an option heavy offense that could also utilize his strong arm. Though I do agree that the offense was completely geared towards Zach.

Time of possession isn't the issue. It's actually scoring. We don't finish drives. Heck most drives are 3 and outs or stall after 1 first down.

And our defense is capable of stopping anyone, but only when everyone is present. Our defense began to collapse today when we had a player ejected. We recovered. But UCA couldn't complete a 5 yard pass at the beginning of the game.

I'm pretty much just saying that our starting 11 on defense could probably start anywhere in the country(FCS wise). Our offense, while having outstanding athletes at receiver and RB, has a weak O-line and has a bad issue dropping passes. So much so we can't even utilize our best QB on our roster and have to go to a check down QB.

UCA 's freshman QB was 19-41 and missed many wide open receivers. Our defense played well. National championship caliber? No.

Jake definitely came to play yesterday - played his heart out and brought emotion to the sideline. My hats off to him. He took too many hits and was the victim of too many bad snaps, I have nothing but respect for his will to win and trying to carry the team on his shoulders.

Spot on, he missed quite a number of receivers that had separation. It was windy, but these were just overthrows that left you relieved. He had several breakaway TDS just sitting there and he couldn't hit them. Our defense did play well, but his missed throws did help.

Last comment about the game. Second quarter, UCA driving. Looks like we are late making defensive changes when suddenly, the CB standing no more than 5 yards from our bench falls out like he has had a major cardiac event. He lays there with one arm in the air. Whistle blows. Trainers come running on the field. After 30 seconds maybe, he is up and jogging off the field.

Embarrassing really. He does not have a future in the theater.

Agreed. Jake has heart. If he could develop he would be more than "serviceable". Not saying superstar or 2nd team all conference jusy better than average. Maybe wins a game or two for you but doesn't lose them.

We would have a much better view of our skill player talent level if we had an O-Line. Hate to keep saying that but it's where everything starts and begins in the SLC. The league is strong enough that you cannot win consistently without a good line on both sides.

Thanks for all the positive remarks on Jake's behalf. For those of you guessing why Jake started over Foster, it was a head Coach decision. Foster is not hurt, beat up or injured in any way. I've been saying every since this summer who the two QBs where going to be and now I think the decision has been made. So here's alittle insite.. the receivers run the same 4 routes the entire game and when they dont run the right route and when your throwing to a spot and the receivers not there then it looks like an overthrow. We look great in the 1st quarter then when the DB's figures out what routes the receivers are continuing to run its hard to get separation. The OL isn't giving Jake anytime to go through his progressions. How many receivers can you look at in 2 seconds when you have 5 guys coming at you. I'm tired of people saying Jake is a game manager.. Barbay calls the plays not Jake. His play calling is very predictable he still has ALOT to learn. The offense will practice 2 dozen plays and run the same 8 during the game. I have seen my son pick himself up off the turf time and time again and I'm not sure there's a tougher player on this team.. So for all you armchair QBs that may or may not have played varsity Football in high school until you have gone through what this kid has gone through you need not speak about Jake's ability. He is loved by his teammates and repespected by his coaches and AD. At the end of the day that's what is most important for Jake. If anyone has anything they would like to say, you can always DM me

I have not been able to watch very much SFA football this year, but from what I have seen this has definitely been the case. Truth is, we don't have anyone on our coaching staff that should be calling our plays. Nothing against Barbay or Moses, but we are running an incredibly stagnant, one dimensional offense. I know we have a terrible line up front, but with the playbook we have in place I'm not sure if it matters anyway. Foster has unreal physical characteristics, but I'm not sure he has the mindset to be a QB. I didn't think Conque or Crowton ran a particularly good offense, but it was strides ahead of the same 5 plays being run over and over again.

Just a little more information. The QB for UCA was not their freshman QB. The three deep QBs they have are hurt. The freshman they have is terrible so the QB that played against us was their tight end. I made the comment in the stands at how big the "freshman QB was". Then the parents of their QB leaned over and said well he is our son and he normally plays tight end. Today, he is the QB.
After the game I shook their hands and told them their son had a good game.

Thank God... That Hunter kid is worthless as an OT.. I know 100% I would be able to get to the QB against him.. I am 47 yrs old and haven't played contact ball in 23 yrs but I know I can out play him.. Dude is pathetic...

Just want to say thanks to the parents of the student athletes that read the forum and especially to those who take the time to comment and provide insight. I know you're very invested fans as well, but I also know it can be tough on a fan forum where we discuss winning and losing and performances in an impersonal way. We love the kids we have here, but I'm sure in a season like football is having, it's not always easy reading.

Thanks for your support, not only to your kids and the college but also to this site. You help make it better.

nacluth,

Thanks for the comment. I cannot speak for all the parents. If you have a student athlete then you have been a Fan/Parent for a long time. We all have experiences in some way both positive and negative when it comes to being a blended person.

As a fan and a competitive person (I mean I have seat belt races with my other two kids in the car just to keep them in check), I get frustrated when it does not come together and I relish the good seasons too. I am sure my son can tell you he has herd the words "I cannot believe you stunk it up out there tonight". Followed by the guilt of oh yeah... I need to be the loving parent... GREAT JOB tonight.

It is a balance that is hard to master. I think most parents know their limitations and probably don't get on boards like this because the know they will loose their cool. Others of us enjoy not only having a player, but the whole pie of fans, coaches, friends, and family even with all their opinions.

If you are on this sight it is because most of all you love SFA and want the best for the school no matter what opinions are put out there.

So I ditto your comment and care for all the players. I accept the missed blocks, the tripping on your own feet when no one is around, the over throws, the under throws, the blown coverage's, the watching the guy run by and realization that oh he has the ball. I accept the break away touchdown runs, the deep ball catches, the kick returns, the sacks, the stuffs, the 4 and inches.. DENIED.

Those kids out there spend hours doing things none of us would think or want to do for our entertainment. So remember sometimes it is a bad show but there are always those awesome moments too when you come off your seat throwing your hands in the air yelling OH YEAH.

I'm going to stop rambling.

A little clarification: #10, Luke Hales, is a RS freshman QB, not a TE.

The young man you are probably referring to is #19 who was a HS QB and recruited as QB who was moved to TE and recently moved back to QB after we lost top 2 QBs in depth chart in Sam game.

Thank you for the clarification. I thought he was the QB. which is why I made the comment at how he was a big QB for a freshman in the stands. I guess the UCA folks by me were pulling my chain or making me think we were playing against a recently moved to QB player.

You just can't trust UCA fans. Unless they tell you that they're really glad you hired their head coach because they're glad to be rid of him.

If they say that you should be very, very afraid.
