SFA / #2 Baylor

SFA (3-0) vs. #2 Baylor (3-0)

WHEN: DEC. 9 (WED) 7:00 P.M.
WHERE: Ferrell Center (Waco, TX)
WATCH: ESPN+/B12Now

Anyone that watched the first half of Sunday’s game knows what reality tastes like, but you can just spit that out of your mouth. SFA is going to get to play Baylor tomorrow night, and it’s time to start dreaming again.

Part of the mystique that Keller has sold to his players is their ability to win the big games - the games other teams see as David and Goliath stories. They’re not. This is why these guys came to play here. To beat these “top” teams. Two years ago on some random Tuesday in December, the Jacks were in the midst of a terrible road trip that started with losing their point guard for illness, saw their top recruit get benched, and ultimately was the breaking point that led to two players getting dismissed. In the midst of that, Keller somehow got a limping team to give all they have and down Baylor. It ended something like this:

Baylor is a better team. SFA is a better team. On paper, the #2 team in the nation that just blew the doors off of Brad Underwood’s #5 Illinois by double digits should absolutely do the same to our team. Maybe that will happen, maybe we’ll lose by 25 like everyone says we should, or maybe, there’s still some holiday magic that hasn’t worn off from Keller’s jackets.

You can talk stats and matchups for the next 24 hours or so waiting for the game to start. But, this game is going to come down to heart. It’s the kind of heart that sees David drill a three with 10,000 fans screaming at him or Roti fighting to deflect the ball that’s going for an easy bucket or Gavin diving on the floor knowing there is no way that he is not coming up with it...or even a guy with a bad back and two bum knees running 70 feet to score the most important layup of his life. Who’s got heart? Not a team that wears yellow and green. Real hearts bleed purple.

Axe’ em!

No joke, I'm glad ACU is going with us if we go to the WAC.

They'll make the conference stronger.

We're giving it to them.

Baylor is reaching and grabbing without even touching the ball. Reaching in on the dribble and making body contact, no call.

At least we earned the last one.

We are out rebounding them...it that matters at this point.

We gotta clean up the turnovers, atleast the ones we can control.

Officiating sucks. Baylor is REALLY good defensively, but they are getting away with the obvious hand checks that's disrupting our ball handling.

Are we ever happy with the refs? This board has never seen a ref that's as decent.

I think they're calling a good game.

Two hands extended into the ball handler is a foul. I counted it three times after my first post. That's not calling a good game

Yup, I know he came alive in the 2nd half last game & had 16 pts. I'm still not convinced. And that's my opinion. Lol

I'm not surprised the refs didn't give Johnson the bucket when he charged, but looked like he got the shot off prior to the contact. Probably doesn't matter anyway, turnovers killing us.

*unless they let it go on both ends...which they did not.

Baylor has 19 points off of our turnovers, not a winning formula.

A what could have been half. Really had our game for about 18 minutes minus all those turnovers. If we can get it back under ten then we might have a shot, but at this rate it will be hard.

Maybe I'm just not seeing what you are. I see us out of control in the paint, picking our dribble up early and panicking under pressure.

Maybe you're right, but refs can't be blamed for everything, which is what every game thread devolves into.

We gave up 3 uncontested 3's at the end of the half...not the refs fault.

We missed most of our FT's...not the refs fault.

We look whiney when all we do is blame refs.

How about this: "we played like **** the last 4:00 and thus, were losing by 16."

You don't win many games shooting as poorly as we are compared to as hot as they are.

I don't know what you want from us. We're not allowed to complain about blatantly bad calls giving us an even tougher mountain to climb?

Ok then.

Still a great game for our players. We're going against the #2 team and we look like a competitive team.

Nobody is doing anything but pointing out bad officiating. That doesn't mean anyone thinks that's the reason why we would be losing a game like this.

That's what I'm looking at. We cut out half the turnovers, this is a close game.

Rebounding is about want to. Cutting out turnovers is about gelling as a team & we won't be making this mistakes in March. That's what matters.

I don't like people using the refs as the primary excuse.
Sure, they missed some calls, but not 16 points worth or 15 turnovers worth. Sometimes it's not the refs fault.

Turnovers and the total fail in the last 2 to 2/12 minutes of the half put us in a deep hole. So yes largely our on undoing.

I never expect fair dealing from the refs when we are on the road against a Big school. We needed to hang for the whole 20 minutes but we did not.

Certainly seems like folks would rather blame refs than just admit we played like poo, especially the last 4:00.

Baylor is playing great defense and they are making free throws, which we're not. When I coached, all I asked for was consistency. Now tell me if you see consistency at both ends. No, it's not the refs fault, but they can be much better.
TallTexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nobody said they were the primary reason. We've all been talking about cleaning up the turnovers to keep us in this game.

Doesn't change the fact that they invented 4 charge calls before they called one that was textbook. Ya it's not 16 points & 15 turnovers, but it's a difference maker. One team is being allowed to play their game on both ends. One isn't.

It's fine to point that out, even if the more athletic team would still have a lead going into half.

I expect refs to be fair no matter where or who is playing. If you know if some private meetings conspiring against small schools, I'd love to hear it.
