As the school year draws to a close, sports summer camps will be in full force beginning next month. Across the nation, kids as young as six and as old as eighteen will be joining collegiate coaches to practice fundamentals and study the art of their sport. In some cases, sports camps even present an opportunity to get noticed by those making recruiting decisions at the next level.

In Nacogdoches, well over half of football coach Clint Conque's signings over the past three years have been former Stephen F. Austin campers. Even for younger students, summer sports camps have created opportunities to experience elite coaching and guidance from respected professionals at the next level while developing relationships with peers around the state.

Entering his second full year behind the wheel of SFA's basketball program, head coach Kyle Keller will take a break from the recruiting trail to put on three camp sessions at William R. Johnson Coliseum next month. Two day camps (for grades 2-8) and an overnight camp (for grades 2-12) will serve as a clinic for youth basketball players in their development of shooting, passing, dribbling and other fundamental skills of the sport. All youths, from novice to those who have played most of their lives, are welcome and encouraged. The camps are designed to offer something for all levels of basketball ability.

Keller's staff and current Lumberjacks players will put on the events for the second time and will continue a long tradition of coach-led camps at Stephen F. Austin. A team of assistants, including Jeremy Cox, considered among the premiere front-court positional coaches in college basketball, recruiting guru and former Tulane guard Wade Mason, Derrick Jones (who joined Keller's staff after a stint in the SEC at Vanderbilt), and SFA's four-point legend Desmond Haymon, will join Keller in sharing their expertise with attending campers.

Keller will enter his second season at SFA with nearly three decades of experience coaching at the highest level of college basketball. Since joining the staff at Louisiana Tech in 1990, Keller has worked for household names like Eddie Sutton, Bill Self, Billy Kennedy while putting together an impressive coaching resume that included stops at Tyler Junior College, UTEP, Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Texas A&M.

His reputation as a recruiting ace has extended to SFA where his staff pulled in the 73rd best class in the country this spring, per 247Sports. The Lumberjacks' 2017 class bests many notable basketball powers, according to that list, including Baylor, Notre Dame, Virginia, UConn, and Oklahoma State.

But leading a program surrounded by fans and optimism will be put on hold for June 6th-9th, June 18th-21st, and June 26th-29th while the SFA staff works alongside the next generation of basketball players.

If you're a parent interested in more information, a visit to the website right here would be helpful. For many kids, including for my little brother last year, SFA sports camps have been a positive learning experience and an opportunity to grow as a person and athlete. The up-close relationship with the current SFA Lumberjacks team is just an added bonus.
