Not sure where to put this story, so I'm putting it here...
Vankey Burks is a senior at Houston Westside High School who was presented with a scholarship to any college of her choice by Warren Moon, Adre Ware, and Vince Young at a Houston Sports Awards ceremony a couple of weeks ago. Three high schoolers from the Houston area who have overcome great odds to get to go to college were chosen as the recipients of the "Brothers in Arms" scholarships.
In the last three years, Vankey and her brother were homeless, sleeping at friends' homes and even in a washeteria, while her mother has been in prison.
The school where Vankey hoped to be accepted was SFA, and she was! Dr. Scott Gordon was there to deliver the news of her acceptance.
Vankey plays basketball at Westside, and she hopes to play basketball as a Ladyjack at SFA.
Here's a story that appeared in the Houston Chronicle...
