We have finished our slate of D1 non-conference games, and I would know like to hear from you about our team. Obviously we have done a lot of things right. There's still room for growth in certain areas. There's tons of excitement. It doesn't matter if you're stating the same thing someone else has, put it out there what you think about this team.

What's been our best game?
What's been our worst game?
What have we done right?
What have we done wrong?
Where have we improved the most?
Where do you think this team is going?
What's the ceiling for the Jacks?

I'll get us started with some old takes of mine, but I would love to hear what you got too. Exciting time to be a SFA fan.

You don't have to read all this obviously, but this was my initial take after seeing the LeTourneau game. Actually most of my questions for this team have been answered. The biggest ones were Ivan's play, Gilmore's defense, and the coaching schemes. All have turned out pretty good.

Feel free to skip this post as I kind of just want to record my thoughts about the first game of the season that I saw in person, so maybe I can come back toward the end of the year and see how things went.

First off, biggest improvement - Fan Section. I hope Purple Haze keeps it up throughout the year, but on a light night for a terrible team, they brought it. Already better than just about anything last year. Students were involved - a whole section, not just three rows. Even the rest of the crowd seemed to be into it more because of it. Liked the atmosphere on a whole. Best in the Southland is getting better.

Starters:
Kevon is a beast. He can get to the foul line at will. He does have that Walkup-esque animal energy that is uncommon. (Honestly TJ needs to steal some of it.) He's struggling with some control issues with playing too intense, but as the intensity seems to propel his play, I'm pretty much fine with it. Everyone on this team is struggling with taking plays off, but he and Aaron are the best at being in the game.

Aaron (Where are you A A Ron?) is the most improved player. This guy is wanting to be a stud and showing that he has the potential to be one. As bad as his shooting stroke was last year, it's gotten as good this year. He is starting to show finesse around the basket. He seems to have a much better handle on running point, but his teammates are not making him look good. They did at Longwood, but these non-D1 contests have been rough for running offense.

Holyfield is our rock, but he can be more solid. TJ is definitely the sun around which this team orbits. He is methodical and does work. He's going to get points and rebounds and blocks and steals and traveling calls and moving screens, but he's going to be consistent about it. He has played the same game every game, and with a team that needs continuity, he's providing it.

Canete...I don't know. He was sloppy all last year save for three games where he was electric. The beginning of this game Keller purposefully ran the offense through him for about 4 minutes, and it was okay. Nothing special, nothing bad. Just decent. But then for about the next 30 minutes of gameplay, he kept showing that he was lazy, reckless, and almost unaware of situational play. Twice he ran into the forecourt corner without ever looking for a pass, and the PG was trying to pass to him but couldn't because he wouldn't LOOK AROUND. He plows over people at random sometimes, and his shot three games in is atrocious. His point totals the last three games come from the four plays he's super plugged into and then just being greedy. If Charles gets healthy soon, I'm okay with not seeing Ivan start this year. I want it to be different...help us Ivan.

Gilmore was an elite defender at the end of last year. I don't know what's happened to change that, but there are obviously off court issues that are keeping him from excelling. Godspeed on working those out.

Bench:
Bogues is just about everything I want out of a shooting guard. His weaknesses are positional defense and perimeter shooting (at least in the small sample I've seen). He is opportunistic cutting off passes and with quick swipes which lead to fast break points - at which he excels. He can handle that ball. He had one steal where on the run he dribbled through three guys including some behind the back (on the run...I know), and then dished the perfect assist. Between he and Kevon you can just about count 35 points for every game...sometimes more.

Comeaux is a bright spot. That kid has energy. His back to back solo plays in the second half were so much fun. Like Augustin last year, he's going to foul a lot until he can learn to control himself. Turns out he's just a sophomore, so the tandem between him and Aaron are a pretty good match for the rest of this year and beyond. He's vocal at point, and you can tell his mind is working to keep it all moving. Again, the team doesn't seem to be executing offense that well, but it did seem that in his short work at point, they got into formation well.

Niemenin is still a potentiality. He can get position better than any big we have but he's just not able to finish smoothly. I think with playing time he'll develop, but he may still be a next year threat. He can shoot from the line though which helps. Aggression is what Keller talks about, and Sammy needs it.

Grujic is better for a 7 foot Serbian pedestrian. He knows how to play basketball, and tonight he showed that he can in certain situations. I've started rooting for him because it's too painful to not. He made some buckets against some guys half a foot shorter than him. That is an improvement. He has no defense. That's it.

Fisher is a no show literally. Hope he does at some point.

Coaching at this point is mixed in my mind. These last few games have seemed like practice (they probably are). Keller is clearly managing the game and rotations, and it's not too hard to see when he switches to a new tactic or personnel. I'm still hating the over the top inlet feed, but I guess it's part of a scheme he wants to see work. It finally did a little better tonight, but the inside defenders were tiny. We have more playmakers which is masking overall sets, but when he calls certain plays, they seem to work. It just appears that more often than not he wants improvisation on the court. No one yet has the IQ of Pinkney and Walkup to make it work yet.

Overall, we're going to win a lot of games. I'll be shocked if we're not rolling towards a top finish in our league, but turnovers and defense have to improve. I'm sanguine about the Miss St game. I think it will expose us, but I think we'll have some opportunities there too. I think this team has a lot of upside. I think we can and should expect a tournament berth this year but we need character...and it's not quite here yet.

And then, here's what I thought going into the Miss St. game.

Ok all you SFA realists...

Over on the Pick Em contest, so far only TallTexan and I have picked SFA to win and 11 against (with an average of a 15 point loss). Tonight, something is going to happen that's about to change this team. Kevon, TJ, and Bogues are going to go through this team like a wrecking crew, and something is going to crystallize in them: BELIEF.

That belief that they can play together against anyone is going to take hold and change the identity of this team. They are going to believe that as a unit nothing is going to slow them down. Gilmore is going to believe that he can be an elite defender. Aaron is going to believe that he can go toe to toe with the best point guards out there. This team's belief is going to turn them into a juggernaut.

They are going to win 6 of their next 8 games. They are going to win 17 conference games. They are going to win the SLC tournament, and they are going to win their 4/13 seed matchup against Baylor in Dallas. They are going to believe that this year is their year, and next, they will redefine Southland basketball.

The train's leaving the station. Don't wait or you're going to miss out. I believe tonight it all changes.
I may have blew my prediction on that specific game. Harris was taken out of his game, but I believe it lit a fire in him. Also, we did win 6 of 8. I still believe we will win 17 of our SLC games. We will win the tournament. We will win in the tournament. Absolute ceiling is the final four. Now I'll just laugh my way to the bank...

I remember being very excited when Keller first took the job due to his amazing ability to bring in talent. I watched all that talent play last year, and we struggled. We were young. We had one senior on the roster. That being said, we still almost won 20 games. This season has me excited. We are still by all accounts a young team. Our three leading scorers should all be back next season. Any one of our guys can step up and win a ball game for us. Our offense is starting to look smooth. I told my friends this last night, but we are 1-2 in the SEC conference, with all of those games going on the road and only loosing by 6 point combined. I don't know that we would have been ready for that type of basketball under BU to be honest. I've been very impressed in our non-conference play. IMO, we should go 18-0 in conference and win both tournament games. Should go to the tourney 31-2. The crazy thing is we expect to win. Even in the year we played WVU, I still had a seed of doubt. They were a good team and we had not proven that we could play with a team like that. Yet we proved ourselves then. We've already proven ourselves now. I expect a 12 seed at worse, and a Sweet 16 run in the making.

Nacluth, I love your optimism. I was thinking if we could keep it respectful to a 12-15 point loss I could live with that. Now I believe we can play with anyone. It seems that the players are buying in to what Keller is selling.

Love the depth on this team. We have the potential to be a big dance team if we bring it every game. If we let our guard down in the Southland and we get beat.

This team is light years ahead of last year. Getting national attention should help in recruiting. Would love to have a ruthless big added next year( kinda like Mizzouri has. Lol)

OK, I'll take the role of Captain Obvious and say...

The three things we've most improved on from last season have been our shooting, our defense, and our floor generalship. Last year, we were "The Little Team That Couldn't Shoot Straight". Thank goodness that's not the case this year. Ivan has finally found his outside touch. TJ is hitting shots from inside and outside. And Kevon suddenly can't miss from anywhere on the court.

Kevon in particular has really surprised me. I knew he was good, but he honestly didn't show a lot of great scoring ability last year. He's worked on that in the last seven months and it has paid off big time. Add to that the shooting ability that Shannon has brought to the team and it's no wonder we're 100% better shooting the ball. Also, the ability of several guys to drive to the basket is vastly improved, too. Hitting from the outside is obviously a big factor in opening up the driving lanes.

On floor generalship, the improvement of Aaron has been absolutely mind-blowing. Before the season, Coach K was abuzz about how much he had improved since last year, and the coach wasn't just whistling Dixie. He's a totally different guy. His ball-handling has been wonderful, with very few turnovers. And he's made some outside shots, too, something he never did last year. And to have John to spell him during games with very little falloff has been great.

On defense, the trapping defense we're employing now is amazing. It will cause headaches no matter who we play. Bring on more of the Big Boys! It may be the best defense I've ever seen at SFA, and I've seen a lot of them through the years. Other teams just don't have the speed, quickness, and agility to match up with our traps. The traps are something that we've just ramped up recently. Earlier, I saw them practice it during warmups before games, but once the game started it never happened. Boy, it's happening now! I guess it took a while for the potential benefits of that type of defense to sink into the minds of our players. It takes tremendous conditioning to pull it off, but we're seeing the rewards of what it can produce. The obvious downside is that we give up several open looks from the corners during games, but not many (if any) of the remaining teams we play will have the shooting stroke that Mizzou showed.

Finally, I think Coach K has grown a lot as a head man in the last year. He's grown out of acting like an assistant and has become a more vocal in-game leader. He finally has the manpower and depth to do the things he would have liked to have done earlier. I've enjoyed seeing him get more emotional during games this year. A lack of in-game emotions had me worried about him last year, but that has changed.

I suppose the only thing that I would like to see improved upon would be deceasing the number of fouls. When we get in tight games, sending other teams to the foul line might be the only way we could lose to teams that otherwise wouldn't stand a chance of beating us.

One last thing (and pardon me for looking so far ahead). Can you imagine what this team can accomplish next year, with the returners we'll have and the addition of two great players in Seraille, Hughes, and who-knows-who-else?? Again, pardon me for looking ahead... Good times, they are back at SFASU!

Edit: I want to add one more thing, something usually overlooked in all of the buzz... Our three Assistant Coaches - Cox, Mason, and Haymon - are doing an absolutely fantastic job with this bunch of Jacks. Let's show them some love, too!!

Extremely excited about this team. Love Coach Keller and he seems like a guy that we can keep around for a while. Two things to improve on would be to lower the foul totals and not have the scoring lapses that have plagued us several times this year. Not so much against Missouri though.
Love the TEAM first attitude of this group!

As I'm getting older what excites me more is the ability to sit guys and develop them for a year. No pressure to produce year 1 even if they could. Like Fisher this year, he could be big next year. If those two guys come in and get to break in as off the bench shots in the arm. That will be huge. But I don't mind if they don't get tons of court time.

What's been our best game? I'd say Mizzou. Yes, we beat LSU, but I think we'd beat LSU 7 out of 10 this year the way we're playing. We were a few missed plays from winning our 2nd SEC game last night.
What's been our worst game? Mississippi State, no doubt. We could have & should have won. Yes they called every foul & invented a few, but if we don't go on a 7 hour long scoring drought, we win that game by atleast 5.
What have we done right? The defense has really come together & the experience of the team has allowed Keller's out of timeout calls & adjustments to shine, because the guys aren't making stupid mistakes.
What have we done wrong? Not passing the athletics support fee & not putting a home & home clause in Keller's buyout.
Where have we improved the most? Sports Center Top 10 plays.
Where do you think this team is going? Disneyland.
What's the ceiling for the Jacks? Sweet 16 is within reach, 1 tourney win would not be surprising.

I've been watching Fisher during timeouts. He just does not seem to be "into it". Instead of putting his head into the huddle to learn all he can and participate in the breaks from the huddle, he just seems to mope around, then take a seat. Little to no enthusiasm. Don't know if it's the lack of playing time or homesickness or something else, but he does not appear to be a happy camper. I absolutely hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him transfer after this season. Maybe he'll get some quality minutes against Arlington Baptist, he perks up, and all will be well. We'll see.
