There are dreams every year for midmajor teams that a stellar nonconference run will impact their season's success. But then comes conference play, and reality comes crashing in. WAC play is upon us, and though SFA was able to squeak out a share of the regular season title last year, this is now a stronger field.
It all starts with ACU. Last year's WAC play ended with an absolutely embarrassing blowout loss to the Wildcats, and though this is a different Lumberjack team now, you better believe they have this game circled for some revenge.
Both teams sit at 8-5 with a lackluster non-con showing. KenPom have these teams identically placed at SFA 174, ACU 175. It's going to be a typical dogfight between two teams who think they are the best midmajor in Texas (yes, Sam Houston sucks).
The faces are the same. Stop Airion Simmons the streakiest big shooter from getting going. Stop guards Cameron and Allen from getting comfortable. Keep Steele off the glass. They are a high percentage shooting team that does not let other teams score. But they have yet to beat a top 200 team.
The Jacks have to find a way to score against a good defense and not turn the ball over. SFA is turning teams over 17+ times a game, but are the worst in the nation at turning it over themselves. We're not winning with 20+ TO's.
A game of who wants it more over a dead Christmas break. It's a hard row to hoe this year in the WAC and this is as much of a must win as any.
