The 2020-2021 season will usher in a new decade for SFA basketball. Looking back on the last decade, the Jacks shine as the clear class of the Southland Conference. Here are the conference records since 2010-2011:

Seasons Won Lost Pct
SFA 10 142 36 .798
UT-Arlington 2 22 10 .688
Sam Houston St. 10 114 64 .640
Oral Roberts 2 23 13 .639
UT-San Antonio 2 19 13 .594
Texas A&M-CC 10 95 83 .534
Nicholls 10 89 89 .500
Northwestern St. 10 88 90 .494
SE Louisiana 10 87 91 .489
New Orleans 7 61 67 .477
Texas State 2 15 17 .469
Abilene Christian 7 58 66 .468
McNeese 10 79 99 .444
Lamar 10 77 101 .433
Incarnate Word 7 46 77 .374
Houston Baptist 7 45 83 .352
Central Arkansas 10 58 120 .326

SFA had only two seasons they did not reach double digit wins, 2010-11 (9-7) and 2018-19 (7-11)

For the first two seasons of the decade, the conference operated on a 16 game schedule and adopted the 18 game schedule for the 2012-13 season. Before that season began, UTA, UTSA and Texas State all left the conference. Oral Roberts joined the conference. The 10 team conference enabled each team to play the others twice.

ACU, UNO, UIW and Houston Baptist joined the conference in the 2013-2014 season.

Also, remember UIW and ACU were transitioning to Division 1 and the conference did not count some of their games in order for the other teams in the conference to avoid violating the rule of playing more than 4 non-D1 teams in a season.

That certainly didn't post the way I wanted.

Dominant.

I wonder how we compare to all Texas schools in that time.

Also, we took a pretty decent decade from Sam Houston and absolutely denied them any glory. Mission accomplished.

My guess is that we are still the winningest program in the state during that time. The only one that "could" be close would be Baylor.

Ask and ye shall receive. It's not even close. Here are the records for all 23 Texas Division 1 teams from the 2010-11 season to current:

SFA 242-83 .745
Baylor 235-110 .681
SMU 208-122 .630
Houston 203-122 .625
Sam Houston 197-138 .588
Texas 198-143 .581
UT-Arlington 190-138 .579
TAMU 191-139 .579
Texas Southern 189-150 .558
UTEP 173-150 .536
Texas Tech 172-156 .524
North Texas 163-161 .503
Abilene Christian 110-109 .502
Texas State 160-164 .494
TCU 163-173 .485
TAMU-CC 148-172 .463
Lamar 144-174 .453
UIW 90-114 .441
UTSA 139-183 .432
Prairie View 141-188 .429
Rice 127-195 .394
UTRGV 119-201 .372
Houston Baptist 103-203 .337

Baylor has played 20 more games than us over the last 10 years and we still have seven more wins. I'd say that's pretty good.

HBU needs to give up.

I'm certainly proud of the achievements our basketball team has made. Before, most people in other parts of the country had not heard of us. Now, we are nationally recognized, at least by basketball fans. I remember when I was working in Los Angeles. It was the day after we lost to Notre Dame on the last second tip in (argh, sigh, move on). A coworker of mine heard that I attended SFA, and he genuinely complimented our team. More recently, at my current job in Charlotte, when mention our team, it seems everyone know us, especially after beating Duke.

Our record over the past decade is remarkable, but we play in a sub-par conference. It's time for us to move on to a stronger conference. How about Conference USA?

I'd love CUSA.

That said, and I may turn this into an article, I'm not sure the Southland conference will survive this downturn.

Nicholls couldn't afford post season tourneys. You think their Athletic Department can survive the Uni having to refund 20% of a Semesters room & board?

Lots of Southland programs subsidies are about to be cut big time.

I really, really love that Sam is a top 5 program in wins and has achieved absolutely nothing by it because of SFA. Brings a smile to my face.
