SFA (8-8, 1-3) vs. Incarnate Word (6-11, 1-3)
WHEN: JAN. 19 (SAT) 3:30 P.M.
WHERE: McDermott Convocation Center (San Antonio, TX)
WATCH: ESPN3
The Lumberjacks come into their fifth Southland Conference game of the season on a three game losing skid. It's something that hasn't happened since the middle of Kaspar's coaching career (2006-2007). A fourth loss...well that's unthinkable. Injuries, additions to the line-up, benchings, and inconsistent play have all been part of the struggles through the last couple of games. There have been promises and commitments and a focus on February, but the Cardinals are a team that's more on the mat than the Jacks. If we can't get over this hurdle, then there is a strong indication that SFA will not be hoisting the trophy in Katy.
Incarnate Word is the best free throw shooting team in the country - almost 81% with several key players hovering the 90% mark. That is what they do well. Everything else is suspect. Their one conference victory is against Nicholls (the game before they knocked off SFA). They won it by playing a 1-2-2 zone and forcing the Colonels into bad perimeter shots while challenging the boards. However, typically they are a terrible rebounding team (last in the Southland). SFA should have a strong advantage in height against this very young team. Don't count out the home team though. This game is their "Operation Sellout" game - kinda like a Purple Out, and if they accomplish it, they will have about as many attendees as a slow Ladyjacks game. But, they play in a glorified high school gym, so it will be loud, and UIW will be pumped. As bad as we've been, we're still worth a notch in someone's belt. We can expect to take this bad team's best shot.
SFA is not at the best at anything right now - except maybe for not being able to play the game we want. Defense has had moments but lacks consistency. Offense is nearly non-existent except when we just ask Bogues to take on the world. Most of our players have been riding the bench due to injuries, but it's the team that's on life support. This game needs to be the defibrillator blast that gets its heart pumping again. Offense has to learn to be balanced while the defense needs to be solid internally. The Jacks should own the boards Saturday afternoon. If they don't, it's going to cause everything to go downhill. Shannon and Kevon need to feel the freedom to go off shooting-wise, and the rest of the team should follow. The Cardinal defense is porous and we need an 80+ point game bad.
If you want to make sure to feel great, watch the Ladyjacks dismantle their practice opponents in the opening bout, but stick around to see the men get their mojo back and stop the slide.
