I'm with non tournament team. To many holes, no cohesion, lack of improvement (IE "sorting things out" the list goes on. This team has some (I repeat some) of the attributes of the Derek Alister coached teams of the late 90's).

Please don't come back at me that I'm making a direct comparison with Allister. There are some comparisons though.

Given the comparative resources and facilities we have a two year slump (6th or worse in SLC) is recoverable. It will just be painful to miss the tournament and be non-competitive next season.
I think the whole "lack of improvement" thing is where I'm seeing things differently than you. I see the improvement every time I watch this team practice. It just hasn't translated to games yet, for some bizarre reason. I'm not saying they're a razor sharp offensive team in practice, but improvement has been obvious to me.

I'm baffled as to why the progress has been so slow to show when it counts - but it's why I keep believing they're on the verge of breaking out.

Isaac,

I appreciate all you do, and maybe there is improvement.

But, WHERE?

Shooting percentages last 5 games:

34%, 48%, 42% ,31%, 41%

That's not progression, that REGRESSION.

Turnovers:

11, 23, 20, 14, 21

Again, awful.

Assists per game (NCAA STATS) - 11.1, Good for 311th in the nation.
Assists/TO ratio (NCAA STATS) - . 58 Good for 344th in the nation (PUKE)
Turnovers per game (NCAA STATS) - 19.1, Good for DEAD LAST in AMERICA

Seriously, I could go on. So, again, Isaac, appreciate your optimism, but spare us all with the "They are good in practice." They can't be.

Zero way this team is good in practice and literally one of the worst in America come game time.

Hold on just a minute. I didn't say they are "good" in practice. What I said is there has been definite improvement. To be clear, as recently as a month ago this team was so bad offensively there was almost zero game planning done because players weren't grasping the basic offense. Now there is some actual opponent-specific scheming involved.

Can you tell during game day? No, not really. I am mystified by the results. I expect at least some tangible evidence of the progress being made each week in practice and, like you, I'm seeing very little.

So once again: IN PRACTICE there is notable improvement offensively between what this team looks like now versus a month ago. During the games? Not so much.

I cannot tell you with any level of certainty why that is. It's enough to keep me on the optimistic side of things, though.

And to be fair to Isaac, practice performance not translating to games is fairly common. Plenty of coaches on all levels and all sports have gone through this. Charlie Strong said that all of the time. Not giving them any excuses, just saying.

My two cents worth: I think the pressure of playing at a school with such a great winning tradition, including turning heads on the national stage at the Big Dance, has been more than the new guys have been able to handle.

Initially, the problems resulted from not having played together. That was understandable. Since then, as the losses have started to mount up, the pressure has shown up. In particular, it has manifested itself in their shooting woes -- hesitancy to take the open shot due to a lack of confidence, and then not relaxing when they do take them. So, at this point of the season, I think it's a mental thing more than anything else. I don't at all blame either the coach or the style of play.

If they can get one good win under their belts, the confidence level will soar, IMHO. If.....

I'd be very happy with 3rd or 4th. Doable ... yes. I'm not optimistic though. I see 6 or 7 teams we split with. 1 or 2 we sweep. 2 or 3 that sweep us. I'm going to say 9-9 conference. 10-8 in the high end. As low as 7 wins 11 losses.

Entering the season, 3rd or 4th was a reasonable expectation. After what we have seen, I think you are right and their record will be closer to 9 - 9 maybe 8 - 10.

I'm not there yet but I'm close to writing this season off. That doesn't mean I won't follow, root, cheer, yell etc. it's just that I will reset my "high end" expectation for making the conference tourney,,, or finishing above 10th or 11th.

I'll begin thinking what's a reasonable expectation for 17-18. Let's be honest the trajectory of this team is downward not upward and if that's part of the change in philosophy so be it. My only comment regarding that is that we should see significant improvement toward the end of the season (say a two or three game winning streak). Then aim for a winning season in 17/18. Again not being a Debbie downer but I'd put my best guess at us finishing 13-16. Yes. That's my guess and I'd go to Vegas if I could bet on it. Best we finish is 15-14.

It's hard for me to believe we will continue to be this bad and inconsistent. We have way too much talent. I wont believe it until I see it. We could lose our next 5 games and I would still believe we can turn it around this season. I guess that is the fanatic in me. We have players on this team that got offers from vcu(Harris) a&m(Gilmore) and Auburn(Tj).

We won a couple of tournament games with guys like Haymon, Parker and Walkup. Nobody wanted them......

So ACU and UIW aren't eligible for postseason, so 3 teams won't make the tournament this year. Just have to be better than 3 teams...we can do it. Please.
