FIRST EVER MEETING WITH CAL POLY

In the final tune-up before Southland Conference play, the Lumberjacks welcome the Mustangs of Cal Poly out of the Big Sky Conference to Homer Bryce Stadium.

Under third-year head coach Paul Wulff (record of 8-17 at Cal Poly) the Mustangs are sitting at 2-1 this season, kicking things off with an impressive 41-17 victory on the road over San Diego, a team that would later go on to beat #24 Southern Utah 30-27 in overtime last Saturday, a Toros team that was a perfect 6-0 at home in 2024.

Against San Diego, QB #7 Ty Dieffenbach, the 6-6; 220 Sophomore out of Calabasas, California accumulated 332 total yards of offense and 3 TD's (completed 18 passes for 263 yards with 2 TD's through the air, while rushing for 69 yards and a score). For the season Dieffenbah is completing 69% of his passes with 537 yards and 5 TD's with only 1 INT, also leads the team in rushing with 75 yards.

Dieffenbach's go to receiver is 6-2; 205 senior #10 Michael Briscoe with his team leading 16 receptions for 288 yards and 6 TD's.

On offense as a team the Mustangs average 35 points a game, while averaging 290 yards through the air, and 113 on the ground.

The defensive side of the ball is represented well by their junior linebackers, #44 Mikey D'Amato 6-0; 230 and #20 Kenny Olson 6-1; 225. D'Amato leads the team in tackles with 30, 2.5 TFL, and 2 sacks with Olson second on the team at 25 tackles, 2.5 TFL and 2 sacks.

Overall the Cal Poly defense gives up 29 points and 405 yards a game (169 on the ground and 236 through the air) <make note that this includes a 9-63 loss to #25 FBS team Utah>

Saturday night the Jacks were able to rest a few players (cruising past Div. II Sul Ross) as they prep for this final non-conference foe, looking to get back to .500, before heading out into the we are strong SLC gauntlet that awaits.

It appears Cal Poly isn't as much of a joke as we thought, but still have a lot of work to do. Still they're 2-1 and will be traveling to Nac with an upset on their mind.

Hopefully this past week gave the team confidence and got the offense in gear. If we can reawaken the right arm of Sam Vidlak, SFA becomes the dangerous team we thought they were before the season.

This game is going to be very telling for the rest of the season.

The first two games are hard to judge. UH has a really, really good FBS defense, and ACU it turns out is actually a good top 25 team, a top 25 team we should have blown out mind you, but one our offense absolutely could do nothing against.

Cal Poly is much better than we thought in the preseason, but probably a middle of the road Southland team for comparison.

The season will be won or lost with Vidlak, that much is clear. If Sam goes out and slings the rock with confidence, can make some deep throws, and looks poised, I think it's fair so say the beginning of the season was not how we should define the 2025 Lumberjacks.

If we can't get the offense going against Cal Poly, our defense struggles, and it's even a close game, we can begin to have some real concerns.

The season isn't lost, the hope for an at large bid if we don't win the conference isn't even lost, but this game will tell us how we should feel about the rest of the season.

This has to be a big win. Not a win. A comfortable win. I'm not saying we need to blow them out but it needs to be a never in doubt game.

If we show up, take care of business, even if we make some mistakes, the hope that SFA can run the Southland is still there and the potential for a playoff run can still be hoped for. If not, it's gonna be hard to be confident about any SLC opponent.

Also looking at the Cal Poly forums at least one user is talking trash about our fine university, so I hope we go up big and Carthel doesn't call off the dogs. Hang 80 points on those bums.

I'm filled with cautious optimism this week. Hopefully we get a solid FCS win before Southland play commences.

I notice that we've finally poured stairs for the Jacks to walk down from the dressing room onto the playing field in the north end. I never understood why they required the players to slip slide down that hill for years before and risk the possibility of getting hurt.

It wasn't a bad idea. Just 4 let the guy go right past him lol.

Vidlak's arm is Not what it was last year. His injury has not fully healed or has affected his throwing ability.
Not a criticism, just by observation. Most of his throws are now of the very short variety.

It's a results-based business. The results say it was a terrible idea, especially in the context of us running right down the field with Wembley.

O Line is definitely falling well short in pass protection. That said , watch when Vidlak throws. Does not have the zip and strength of last season. Kind of looks like what the UT people are complaining about Manning's throws.

I do agree. It doesn't have much zip for sure.
