FOOTBALL HISTORY VS SUL ROSS STATE UNIVERSITY FROM NOVEMBER 4, 1950 - NOVEMBER 1, 1975

SFA leads the series 18-8 having won the last 4 meetings back in the 1970's.

The Lobos of Sul Ross State (welcome to division II), take on the Lumberjacks of SFA in an old Lone Star Conference rivalry reunion in the piney woods where it is east versus west Texas, where you can almost smell the throwback jersey's of the 1970's.

SR is coming off a 66-0 defeat by the hands of UTRGV in Edinburg, that kicked off the inaugural season of the Vaquero's football program.

UTRGV QB Eddie Lee Marburger was almost perfect in the game, throwing for 365 yards on 18 completions with only 19 attempts, 5 TD's, no INT's, and no sacks. In total the Vaquero offense racked up almost 700 yards of offense, while the defense held the Lobos to just 74 total yards, with 9 tackles for loss and 4 sacks.

SR has not had a non-losing season since 2017 when they went 5-5, and have not had a winning season since 2016 when they went 6-4.

Could Rutherford get the start Saturday, with a banged up Vidlak getting an extra week to heal up for Cal Poly?

Either way, this game should be quite the stat stacker for the Jacks, a team looking for some kind of momentum into this young 2025 season.

Having this game week 3 feels weird. Week 1 or 2 makes sense, we have our FBS game then our tune up home opener week 2, then on to FCS play. Having it week 3 just feels out of place and hard to get excited for. I'm gonna watch every down like I always do, but still feels off.

Still hope we use this game to really fine tune our offense and get our guys into a rhythm. For whatever reason the offense just seems to be stagnant and needs to figure out how to work before we can reach the potential this team can be at.

Our schedule needed to be changed because some scheduled opponents needed changes. This is not the original schedule.

It's Gameday!

This is a sub D-1 game, we will likely pad our stats so much the first 2 games won't seem like they happened, but this is our chance to get the offense back in rhythm and get the defense its confidence back.

This will also be an opportunity to get the younger guys some experience. Gavin Rutherford and JT Kitna should see snaps in this game if we pull away early, which will be a peak into the 2026 QB battle after Vidlak is gone(assuming Carthel is still here or the entire team doesn't jump in the portal if he isnt).

By the way, Sul Ross' campus is ugly, but I LOVE Alpine...gateway to Fort Davis, the MacDonald Observatory, and the Big Bend...if you haven't made it out there I recommend it...giant sky, millions of stars, and little humidity.

Well this one going as expected 21-0 with 5 minutes left in 1st quarter.

Sul Ross only 2nd year at Div 2 and sounds like a very young team on top of that.

Only concern so far is Jacks have had 2 or 3 guys limping or helped off the field. Last thing we need is a rash of injuries.

Good crowd. Offense looks good. Defense looks ok, minus the penalties. This should have been a week zero game.

I know. It's hard to get a game vs UofH.

The biggest benefit for this game is just getting our confidence back and getting the little things cleaned up. I'd say that was a success. This game should've been played earlier, but it is what it is.

Right on. Totally agree. Wish we could do these as week zero/week one. Get a little confident. Against someone other than yourself.

76 did mention in a post somewhere that this was not the original order of our schedule. Some team or teams needed to move things around. Not sure who but that might explain this game coming 3rd in season.

From the cameras it looked like close to 10k. Either that was really good camera work or we've been drastically over inflating our attendance numbers.

It looked like we had 4,000 on the student side Surely the total attendance wasn't 3000. Looks like a significant miscount. I hate seeing weak attendance when the camera angles made our turnout look very strong.

Agreed. 3000 may have been the paid portion. Like you I have been to numerous games and I look at the crowds. I thought it was more like 8500 based on previous experience.

What bothers me is that it doesn't reflect the excellent job our social media and the purple haze group did attracting a good crowd. It certainly wasn't 3000.

Hopefully it gets corrected Our attendance is on the upswing and we (collectively) should get credit
