The most even game I've seen in years. No turnovers. Lots of methodical offense. Good run defense on both sides. Came down to last possession. Last play. SFA not quite there yet…but so close.
This isn't even a loss I can truly be mad about. That was a dog fight. I mean, I'm mad, but damn does SLU have a solid team when they're on.
Our program is a joke. Season over.

Bummed to see the defense give up a 13 play, 75 yard drive in less than 2:00 to play.
But, it appears we had some issues finishing drives, settling for field goals.
Another blown 4th quarter lead. Disheartening.

Frustrating loss. When we gave them the ball back with just under 2:00 left, I knew what the inevitable result would be.... i figured it would be another bomb in the end zone again. Bottomline is that we are still so far away from a deep run even though we have the talent on the roster.

This is the characterization of SFA, that I have. Tough game. The loss hurts, but I've been largely ecstatic about the execution across the board. SLU made some plays. We made some plays. Our defense showed moments of brilliance.

My takes:
This was SLU's best game they've played all season. When I said they weren't a good passing team, I meant it. Prior to this game they've been a bad passing team. Today it wasn't so much that our defense played bad, their QB was making really good throws at really good times. On that last drive some of those passes needed to be perfect, and they were, especially the 4th down play and the throw that got them to our 3 yard line.
Defensively they were who we knew, or should've known, they were. Very strong and gonna attack. Vidlak once again had a really good game throwing but his lack of mobility is really showing. The offensive line play needs to play a little better, especially on third down situations.
Campos was about to be the Sawmill sports player of the game. If he had maybe 5 more yards of consistent leg, he would without a doubt be on an NFL roster next year. Hate that this is his last year.
This one hurts. It doesn't eliminate us from the postseason, but it put us on life support for that. We cannot afford another loss. Period. We can very possibly squeak in at 9-3 with quality wins against Nichols, UIW and ACU. 8-4 won't cut it.

This was SLU's best game they've played all season. When I said they weren't a good passing team, I meant it. Prior to this game they've been a bad passing team. Today it wasn't so much that our defense played bad, their QB was making really good throws at really good times. On that last drive some of those passes needed to be perfect, and they were, especially the 4th down play and the throw that got them to our 3 yard line.
Defensively they were who we knew, or should've known, they were. Very strong and gonna attack. Vidlak once again had a really good game throwing but his lack of mobility is really showing. The offensive line play needs to play a little better, especially on third down situations.
Campos was about to be the Sawmill sports player of the game. If he had maybe 5 more yards of consistent leg, he would without a doubt be on an NFL roster next year. Hate that this is his last year.
This one hurts. It doesn't eliminate us from the postseason, but it put us on life support for that. We cannot afford another loss. Period. We can very possibly squeak in at 9-3 with quality wins against Nichols, UIW and ACU. 8-4 won't cut it.
We still have 5 games left. It's not over yet. Just need to get off the mat and finish the damn season strong.
Your comments about SELA's QB were right on. He needed perfection on that last drive and he got it.
A huge thing that helped SELA steal this one was their long time-consuming drives. Keeping our high-octane offense off the field made a difference. Part of their game plan, I'm sure.
I won't complain about Vidlak's lack of mobility. He's the best QB we've had in a long, long time. Directs the offense beautifully, throws very few INT's, and is deadly accurate.
If only... With about two minutes left, and on third down at about their 20 yard line, all we needed to do to salt the game away was to make a first down. We didn't. Had to kick a FG which turned out to not be quite enough.
BTW, not having Qualan Jones available was a killer for our offense. He's a difference-maker. What was his injury?

The through-line of Carthel's tenure is the program being the foil; allowing -- or falling prey to -- so many 4th quarter comebacks. Somebody -- after the McNeese loss -- compiled a list of all of the games lost by SFA in the final quarter during Carthel's stint as head coach. I think last night is the 13th or 14th time this has happened. It is what it is, in my opinion. And I just don't see this theme changing any time soon.
I'm very discouraged. Somebody pour me a bourbon...make it a double. Basil Hayden's if you've got it...

I won't disagree that 8-4 is an absolute stretch. Stretch. 7-5/6-6 seems like a low bar but you are correct. Carthel has had trouble closing the deal.
My sense is, that SFA administration and leadership knows that we should be better on the gridiron. And we are about to make some investments.
Carthel has one more year in his contract (after this year). Next year is an 11 game season. He (Carthel) has to know that 8-3 is the minimum next year 7-5 is the low bar for this year.
Maybe being able to keep some coaches will help us turn the corner. I've been watching since 1980. That's a lot of frustration.
