Another season of Lumberjack Football is among us, and we are now officially in a game week, as the Stallions of North American University (Stafford, Texas), come to Homer Bryce to face the new look Lumberjacks of SFA.
The Stallions are coached by Kenneth Apande who was instrumental in getting NAU into the NAIA in 2023 when they joined the Sooner Conference.
The program had their first winning season in 2021 going 5-4 and won their first post season bowl in 2022 winning the FloTex Bowl 34-0.
Not much is known on who the Stallions start for Thursday night, but I did notice on their roster they have a freshman QB in Wyndell Mitchell Jr. 6-0; 190 from high school power and state champion North Shore in Houston.
Last season NAU played around 7 different QBs through the course of the season, who combined for 1,212 yards passing, 10 TD's and 19 INTs while as a whole the offense produced 9-points a game.
On defense the Stallions gave up 47-points a game.
The Jacks look to rebound from a disappointing 2023 campaign, but the question is who will lead the offense back after a spring injury to starting QB Brian Maurer.
Playing a NAIA team should give SFA the chance to get their ducks in a row for the season, and to test some things outs for 2024.
The Jacks win big in this one.
