I've thought the guy at Midwestern St is someone for us to look at. He's been consistently good at Midwestern. Sometimes better than good but never dog sh!+ awful like we are now.

I'd take Whitten in a second over the current regime.

That would be Bill Maskill (Western Kentucky Class of 1971)

17th Season at Midwestern State with stops (mostly as a DB and LB Coach) at SMU, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Oregon, Tulane, Arizona State, Bowling Green, Iowa and Head Coached for 2 seasons at Southeast Missouri State

5 Time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year
16 straight Winning Seasons
8 NCAA Division II Playoff Appearances (But has never advanced passed the 2nd Round)
Only 3 Conference Championships in 16 seasons
28-6 in the last 3 seasons
132-47-0 Career Record

I think he is happy where he is and he's in his 70s probably close to retiring.

These are the guys that will mostly likely get a look, but who knows maybe we go the committee search route again.

Colby Carthel (Texas A&M Commerce Head Coach) Ivey History
Todd Whitten (Tarleton State Head Coach) SFA Alum
Will Healy (Austin Peay Head Coach) Ivey History and any coach who can turn around a program riding a 27-game losing streak into a 8 win season and best finish since 1980 is a winner in my book.
Jeff Traylor (Arkansas Associate Head Coach/RBs) SFA Alum
Curtis Luper (TCU Co-OC/RB Coach) SFA Alum

I'm in the minority but I'd be fine with Whitten. He's got a solid record and our offense couldn't be any worse under him.

81-63 record over 13 seasons as head coach with one conference championship. Includes a 25-28 (16-17 in conference) record in five years at Sam. I don't think those results mesh with Ivey's vision of being the best mid major program.

I think Luper, Traylor, and Carthel are all great targets to interview. Healy looks like a great coach but not sure what Texas ties he has.

I'll do some research this week and see if I can find anyone else who'd be a likely candidate.

An interesting note from Del Conte: He hires people who are known program builders when he hires coaches and we've already started to see that at Texas.

I wonder what Ivey's style will be. Will we go with a riser like Traylor or a guy who's built a program like Carthel?

4:00 - #16 Tarleton State (5-0) vs. #7 Texas A&M-Commerce (5-1) (TODAY)

Tarleton State scoring about 40 points a game and Commerce holding teams to 18 points a game.

Should be a good one.

I don't know if Whitten brings us to "Great" but he certainly gets back to respectability... Right now we are a laughing stock for certain.

I'm reminded how much I like the Sawmill and our fan community anytime I go over to the UT boards. Like a cesspool over there, win or lose.

Texas still hasn't quite gotten over the hump, but Sam Ehlinger is a hell of a QB.

UIW is taking over the SLC If they make the playoffs I doubt the SLC will be pleased with the results. Not that SFA has been any great shakes.

I rarely go to the football board there anymore because of the stupid. Still look at recruiting since it is informational and usually rational.

Yep I keep up with the recruiting and follow some of the writers, but most of the boards for UT fans are absolute trash.

One of the things I've noticed on the D2 and D3 level while scouring to see what candidates are out there is the longevity of the top coaches. Many are 10+ years, with 20 not being uncommon.

I have to admit I like the idea of Todd Whitten as head coach.... scratching my head. I know it's not a possibility because of bridges burned (my understanding) but he's done well at Tarleton. We could use there university President also.

Tarleton has been part of the A&M system since 1917.

That said, I don't think it's unreasonable to for SFA to consider, preferably the UT system.

That's my biggest concern with Whitten. Just makes you wonder if he figured out what was broken or did he hire a heck of an assistant or what changed?

I mean, I won't be mad if he's the guy, just wonder what hiring committees think about him.
