SFA (13-5, 5-0) vs. Southern Utah (12-6, 4-1)

WHEN: 1/14 (SAT) 2:00P.M.
WHERE: America First Events Center (Cedar City, UT)
WATCH: ESPN+

The Lumberjacks head less than an hour up the road to face their next opponent the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah. Both teams use a breakneck pace to dominate other teams, and both WAC newcomers want to be the top of the league. The matinee will be one to watch.

Southern Utah have scored more points this season than any team in America. They have 5 players averaging double digits a night lead by WAC player of the year front runner Tevian Jones (6' 7", Sr, G) who typically gets 20 by himself. They are an experienced team with 6 seniors and 4 juniors getting significant time. No freshmen play.

The T-Birds haven't beaten a team on paper as good as the Jacks until last night's domination of Sam Houston. The went to OT with UTRGV, lost to Tarleton, squeaked by NMSU and ACU both on the road. Like every team the Jacks have faced lately they excel at rebounding. They get to the line 25 times a game even if they don't shoot great from there. They are the deepest team the Jacks have played.

We saw a little last night of what a full lineup can do for the Jacks. Defense, filling the passing lanes, smothering the ball, and attacking at a high level are possible. With so many weapons, it's going to be hard for the Jacks to leave anyone open, but disrupting SUU's game plan is priority #1.

Teams are starting to get creative with how to stop our offense and the Jacks can't afford to get lazy. Last night everyone was firing on all cylinders in the first half, but in the second, they took a mental nap thinking someone would keep scoring. Like SFA, Southern Utah can put up 10 points in a heartbeat. We need a full 40 to keep this train rolling.

This Lumberjack team is pumped to be back to full strength, but they can't believe they have arrived. Anyone looking at the seeding knows the there is still a lot of work to do, but tomorrow we'll have fun, fun, fun until DayDay takes the T-Bird away.

Speaking of Day Day, I'm thinking there's a 50/50 chance that he'll have to sit out on Saturday. He did not look good leaving the game last night. A back injury is typically very hard to overcome on two days rest. And Day Day's long-term health should be the overriding decision as to his playing/not playing, not just this one game.

But I'm no doctor. I just play one on the SFA Sawmill Forums.

Toughest conference matchup of the year.

Southern Utah made 13 threes against Sam at 54% and 56% overall. Let's hope the defense changes that today. Tough road game but winnable.

5 fouls at the first media. Playing strong but refs are having none of it. Got to get in under control.

At this rate we will have 25 fouls by the half.

Beabrun and Armbrister need to learn to play under control.

Tezeno another bad foul. The dunk was halfway down, why touch him

We have no answer for SUU #14. In total control in the paint.

Finally slowing down the fouls and it helps.

May get hurt some at the free throw line this half.
Ljacks&Longnecks
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We are creating turnovers just not creating enough points
nacluth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hanging around ok, but foul rotations are not allowing us to get any type of offense.
nacluth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Somehow amazingly that after the final media of the first half, free throws will be 3 for SFA and 6 for SUU. Could be 30-3 at this point.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Keller getting chippy.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
We have been terrible in the final two minutes of the half. Got to be better today.
Ljacks&Longnecks
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Much better last 2 minutes today. As shaky as it was in the first half only down 2 at the break. Well within reach.
nacluth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
An ugly ugly half and two points down at the half. Incredible. We made more free throws than they did.

We have made Southern Utah play our game plan and it shows. If we can clean up some offense, the game will be ours.

Two points down after that half, we should win this one in second half

Agree, we should win this. Fixing to play a great 2nd half.
nacluth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Decent start to the second. Getting S. Utah rattled a little. Got to push it out a little.
