SFA (13-5, 5-0) vs. Southern Utah (12-6, 4-1)
WHEN: 1/14 (SAT) 2:00P.M.
WHERE: America First Events Center (Cedar City, UT)
WATCH: ESPN+
The Lumberjacks head less than an hour up the road to face their next opponent the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah. Both teams use a breakneck pace to dominate other teams, and both WAC newcomers want to be the top of the league. The matinee will be one to watch.
Southern Utah have scored more points this season than any team in America. They have 5 players averaging double digits a night lead by WAC player of the year front runner Tevian Jones (6' 7", Sr, G) who typically gets 20 by himself. They are an experienced team with 6 seniors and 4 juniors getting significant time. No freshmen play.
The T-Birds haven't beaten a team on paper as good as the Jacks until last night's domination of Sam Houston. The went to OT with UTRGV, lost to Tarleton, squeaked by NMSU and ACU both on the road. Like every team the Jacks have faced lately they excel at rebounding. They get to the line 25 times a game even if they don't shoot great from there. They are the deepest team the Jacks have played.
We saw a little last night of what a full lineup can do for the Jacks. Defense, filling the passing lanes, smothering the ball, and attacking at a high level are possible. With so many weapons, it's going to be hard for the Jacks to leave anyone open, but disrupting SUU's game plan is priority #1.
Teams are starting to get creative with how to stop our offense and the Jacks can't afford to get lazy. Last night everyone was firing on all cylinders in the first half, but in the second, they took a mental nap thinking someone would keep scoring. Like SFA, Southern Utah can put up 10 points in a heartbeat. We need a full 40 to keep this train rolling.
This Lumberjack team is pumped to be back to full strength, but they can't believe they have arrived. Anyone looking at the seeding knows the there is still a lot of work to do, but tomorrow we'll have fun, fun, fun until DayDay takes the T-Bird away.
