SFA (4-1) vs. Saint Louis (5-1)
WHEN: NOV 24 (WED) 7:30P.M.
WHERE: Hard Rock Riviera Maya (Cancun, Mexico)
WATCH: CBSSN
The Lumberjacks are right where they want to be - in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge against Saint Louis. They knew at the beginning of the year that they had a huge chance to gain national attention by playing two top midmajor forces. Now they get their chance to show that they should be in the conversation for basketball fans anywhere.
The Jacks got here by playing disruptive defense and being quite efficient around both baskets. This year's team has been struggling to put together a whole 40 minutes, and tonight they showed that when they are on, they can play with anyone. Less than 10 turnovers,12 steals, 18 offensive rebounds, 5 players in double digits - the Lumberjacks were on fire and showed that they are a stingy tenacious team.
Saint Louis played a very blah game against Illinois St. Their 8 point win masks the level of play they can rise to. Last year, this team was ranked as high as #22 in the AP poll. Reloading with a lot of young talent, they are looking to shoot higher this year. The Billikens only loss this year was to #11 Memphis. Tonight's performance does not reveal all.
Saint Louis has not played a great defense this year, and it will be seen if SFA can repeat their performance 24 hours later. The Jacks will face one of the best point guards in the nation in Yuri Collins (6' G, So.). They play a tandem big man defense, but their strength relies on guard play and lots of motion.
David used the stage tonight as a coming out party for his top level offensive play. Solomon went head to head with one of the top talents in the nation and did a great job shutting Jeenathan Williams down. Kensmil like always was the rock which are team is built on. The seniors had to lead, and they did. Hall and Nana put in great bench work by handling their duties with energy.
If we can repeat tonight's performance tomorrow, then we will set ourselves up well for a trophy and confetti. We can do it.
